Over the course of their summer, ozfortress hosted the Summer Cup 2016, a month-long tournament that featured the top Oceania teams in a double elimination bracket with the prize being Australian (and New Zealand) glory. Sixteen teams (both established and new) competed, with only one in the end surfing the waves and eating shrimp on the barbie with a smile on their face.

The majority of the tournament was business as usual, with the three directly invited teams breezing their way through the Upper Bracket. The competition heated up when the top four teams met in the Upper Bracket Round 3. Jasmine Tea, the top dogs in ozfortress, chewed up Ladracadabradors in a clean sweep, while other invited teams Gossip Girl and :smug: fought tooth and nail, with the former taking Gullywash 7-2 and then managing to take a 4-3 victory in overtime on Sunshine for their spot in the Upper Bracket Final. The Upper Bracket Final saw the two heavyweights fighting to secure their spot in the Grand Final. Gossip Girl were not prepared for the train of Jasmine Tea, however, and were steamrolled 6-1 on Sunshine and 6-2 on Granary, dropping to the Lower Bracket Final.

Over in the Lower Bracket Round 4, :smug: and Labracadabradors recouped from their losses, beating U bad lol? and The Resurrected Six_ respectively in 2-0 wins. This led to them being matched up in the Lower Bracket Round 5 in a battle to face Gossip Girl in the Lower Bracket Final. :smug: was able to cut Labracadabradors' run short, with a decisive 6-1 win on Process and a 4-1 victory on Snakewater, thus moving on. The Lower Bracket Final thus was a rematch of the Upper Bracket Round 3 match between Gossip Girl and :smug: This time, Gossip Girl had a much easier time, dispatching :smug: 6-1 on both Metalworks and Process to book their place in the Grand Final.

The Grand Final of the Summer Cup was a best-of-five showdown between Jasmine Tea and Gossip Girl. Jasmine Tea pulled out a close victory on Granary 4-3 before proceeding to demolish Gossip Girl on Badlands 5-0 in 17 minutes. The third map of the series was Product, where Jasmine Tea gained two rounds and put themselves on tournament point. Gossip Girl fought back valiantly, gaining two rounds of their own to give them a shot at the map win, but were unable to overcome Jasmine Tea in the decider round. As such, Jasmine Tea became the Summer Cup 2016 champions, winning the entire tournament without losing a single map.

Final Standings

  • 1st: Jasmine Tea
  • 2nd: Gossip Girl
  • 3rd: :smug:
  • 4th: Labracadabradors
  • 5th-6th: The Resurrected Six, U bad lol?
  • 7th-8th: Get These Scouts Off Me!, SACRED.tf
  • 9th-12th: Kids!, 90 Pingas, Great Gravy, Male Cougars

Despite being both 6-1s, smug vs gossip girl was a lot closer than that indicates, and was filled with great plays. If people have time they should watch that vod too.
