Fps spikes (how many times it has been discussed)

So I run TF2 with stabby's cfg since chris no longer maintains the others, but whatever config I choose I get a stupid problem that I cannot solve. When I'm normally playing, I get 60-100 FPS in spawn and 30-48 fps in battle, which is perfectly fine for me. BUT, what really is the problem is that from time to time my FPS drops to 10-18 FPS. I googled around a bit and it said to check task manager for resource usage. Here's the problem, when these random spikes happen, CPU usage drops from 30% to 8%! I googled more about "low CPU usage" and all it said enable multicore rendering, which is already enabled.
I've stopped playing TF2 because of how fed up I'm with its random FPS spikes. Things I've tried

  • Reinstall TF2
  • Defrag hard drive (Analyzing says it is 0% fragmented)
  • Make an exception to AVG to stop scanning the steam folder
  • From the worst dx7 to ultra high mat_picmip
  • Changing anti-virus, Used to have AVG, installed avast, still no improvement

Specifications:

  • Windows 8.1
  • Acer Aspire 5755G (A laptop)
  • Intel core i5 2450M
  • 4GB RAM
  • Nvidia GT 630M
  • 500GB HDD (Not sure if that helps or not)

I cannot find a solution to this problem so I figured I would post a thread here hoping for some help.

Also, does this have anything to do? I haven't tried it fully.

1. GPU usage?
2. Why stabby's config, just WHY?

Other than that, welcome to TF2.

Check your power settings and make sure your cpu isn't under clocking itself to save power/cool down. If it's under clocking to save power you can fix that through the power settings like this. If it's slowing down to cool off, you can fix that by getting a laptop cooling pad or making sure none of the vents are blocked off or clogged with dust.

If you replaced configs anyway then backup your settings/binds, delete everything, launch with -autoconfig and then use your normal launch options and configs (settings+chris) again.

I already tried. I stated in the list of things i've tried "reinstalled TF2"

Reinstalling doesn't necessarily mean that you ran -autoconfig.

Yes I did run -autoconfig, and I actually just retry it just now. I am trying dx9 frames and see if there is any improvement.

Chris' configs work fine, true.

Any actual criticisms of my config? It's very similar to Chris', just with values optimized to balance performance with useful things which are turned off in max-frames.

No huge improvement.

If you use Hyper-Threading, right click TF2, go to the Affinity option, and set to "prefer physical cores." Set all other processes to use the "non-physical" cores (odd-numbered).

Regardless of your CPU, disable affinity for "Core0" in all processes but hl2.exe--the game heavily biases that core and you want to relieve whatever load you can from it.

i just took a look and these are the only things i see:

-you put -toconsole in the launch options and im not sure why, there's no real benefit to that
-i am not sure if -16bpp actually does anything in source (vs goldsrc), same with -nocdaudio
-there's a bunch of stuff in here that really wont improve performance at all, consider separating stuff by performance vs. preference

other than that i dont see anything unless someone else wants to add in or correct me.

edit: oops i mixed up two commands

You asked for criticism and now useless launch options are suddenly personal preference?

[sarcasm]Ok then, I'll start recommending -64bit to confuse people. It doesn't do anything in TF2, just like -32bit, but I guess it's personal preference which useless launch option you use. You could even use both so you don't have to decide. More commands are always better, right?[/sarcasm]

I was referring to the parts the poster called personal preference (obviously?).

I threw in those launch options because I couldn't find a source verifying use or harm, and they benchmarked innoculously for me--I figured why not? They won't be in the next version, but what makes them worth knocking if they cause no problems? My config works perfectly well and has no downsides to Chris'. I think you're a little wrapped up in me being "famous", frankly.

As for the OP, the best thing you can do for your FPS is to disable unnecessary services in Windows. The easiest way to do this is Razer Gamebooster, which among other useful things, will disable most of them automatically while in-game and re-enable them when you quit. The program won't disable everything that is ok to turn off, but you can customize the list--do a little reading and disable whatever you can.

Miscellaneous: Grab the No Hat Mod, turn off the Steam Overlay, try windowed vs fullscreen mode, and experiment with setting Control Panel>System>Advanced System Settings>System Properties>Advanced>Performance>Advanced to allocate processor resources to Programs vs Background Services.

It's also possible that your FPS drops, if "unusual", are caused by overheating, particularly since you're on a laptop. Try elevating it so that cool air can pass beneath the bottom and maybe set up a little fan to help (laptop cooling stands don't do much more than this will).

stabbystabby's ego

stabby > chris confirmed by stabby, most definitely more famous than chris in EU comp[/irony]

Throwing everything together as long as it doesn't explode isn't exactly what you'd call a scientific approach. I'd rather trust someone with a proper testing methodology famous or not (chris, vox, etc.).

I'm not sure where I implied my config is superior, but I certainly didn't mean to.

You've failed to provide any reason not to use my config. Can we drop it now?

if it's personal preference and wont help to improve performance you should probably not have it in a performance config. i was honestly just trying to help you and had no intention of ripping on you or your config.

Sorry if I sound overly defensive; I was addressing Setsul not you. I'm just a little tired of people demeaning me without provocation or reason. I hope that makes sense.

No improvement most likely because you're using Gamebooster, which automatically adjusts your power settings to "High" when in-game.
