Really bad cold, does Zinc work

I have a really bad cold/flu since yesterday, and I was wondering if anyone has tried to take Zinc to help the symptoms and if it does help? It's one of the worst I have ever had to the point that drugs aren't even touching it so any remedy that people have I would love to hear. Don't say sleep, I've been trying but it's really difficult.

if you use it at the first signs of a cold it works great.

if you have a cold/flu typically benadryl knocks it out, but if you wanna go more natural... vitamin c and echinacea usually works for me, green tea as well. i get shitty sinus infections and my allergies can be pretty terrible sometimes and that stuff usually does the trick

zinc does 2 things, gets in the way of most viruses ability to reproduce and also blocks their ability to dock in the cells which causes internal inflammation.

Vitamin c is only good before you get the cold/flu. Hope you feel better soon!

zinc wont really help your symptoms it'll just make it go away slightly faster in some cases.

Your best bet is just to drink hot beverages, rest, drink plenty of aforementioned hot beverages, and go to the doctor if you run a high fever or have difficulty breathing or symptoms last for more than you find to be reasonable :D

Also, if it's stuffiness - vicks vapor rub is literally the shit.

If it's a cough, try drinking tea with honey in it - the honey coats your throat and makes things less unpleasant (at least if it's a dry cough).

If it's a wet cough sleep in a chair, take a bath.

Zinc works if you take it ASAP once you know you're sick. Vitamin C just helps your immune system in the long run, though you can still get the placebo effect. Also just suppressing the symptoms w/ over the counter stuff is fine/better at this point probably.

Dunno about foods though.

Thanks for the suggestions, I ended up taking too many codeines last night and could barely remember what I was saying last night. I wasn't trying to take too many but those kind of pills are wierd for me. One will do nothing at all but two just makes me crazy so I don't think I want to do that again.

I'll try to take more vit C and zinc, but when it comes to tea, is it true to avoid caffeine? I'm pretty sure all I have is green tea that has caffeine in it.

Oh and if I have garlic, I would likely clear out the house. It does not agree with me ,at all lol

the caffeine level is pretty low, around 25mg in an 8-10 oz cup at least

it doesn't give you a kick like strong coffee so you should be fine

in a new study zinc "showed a 'relatively minor' reduction in the duration of cold symptoms". so yes it works, but only barely

if youre really stuffed up to the point where you cant sleep, then use afrin when it's really bad. it'll clear you up, but if you use it too much it can start to backfire. also Mucinex D is the best at clearing your sinuses out for the day, it's amazing how well it works. you could also get a neti pot or some other nasal rinse so you can flush the mucus out of your face, just make sure to boil the water or use distilled water so you dont get a brain eating amoeba.

Yeah, zinc isn't terribly useful. If you really want to treat the symptoms, it probably won't HURT, but there are much better medicines out there.

Use "airborne". It's great if you are going to be at an event with a lot of people or on a plane or something. I also usually take it as soon as I start to feel sick. If I already am sick I tend to double shot the stuff. Knocks the cold out pretty quick

I've been taking pseudoephedrine but I think the only way I'd be able to feel better is by bumping up to meth

So yeah, I'm right there with ya :/

The Zinc studies that showed it might be effective also found that adverse effects were more common than relief of cold. Also, the studies were giving 10-15 mg 6 times a day, so you'll want to take more than 1 dose. The studies were also considering participants who had symptoms for <24-48 hrs before taking zinc.

I personally have success with pseudoephedrine (phenylephrine is shit) and I use Afrin for congestion. Also, get lots of sleep.
