#8 Problems with GTX 480 (?) in Hardware

I'm an intel guy so I'm not sure how good that AMD CPU is, but I assume its pretty good based on the rest of the hardware. I have dual 480s, and one of mine died a while back (was replaced for free). Apparently the 400 and some 500 series cards have an issue with the fans where they never speed up to deal with heat levels. Does your card sound whisper quiet even when you are playing? If so, that's most likely the problem. Download evga precision and enable fan monitoring, it'll ramp up the fan speed based on how hot the card gets. Also, drivers blah blah blah...

#17 Competitive CTF concept - thoughts? in Map Discussion

Some of you who know me well know I am an oldschool quakeworld Team Fortress player. Back in the day all competitive play was CTF (with a couple funky wired maps like rock, crown, and canalzone thrown in as well). Everything was 8v8 and matches had a 30 minute time limit, and some leagues had a 100 point rule where if a player hit 100 points his team won.

CTF was so much fun back then and I have always been a little bummed that it doesn't play well in TF2. It COULD work, but it would be tricky. Here are a few reasons why it was successful back in QWTF:

1.) instant respawns. There was no respawn timer back then.

2.) no ubers. Medics had to melee their teammates to heal them and there was no such thing as an uber.

3.) grenades! Concs, napalm, spy gas, mirvs, emp... There was a huge variety of ways to play with all the various types of nades.

4.) 8v8. You had enough people to attack and defend at the same time.

We could disable the respawn timer for comp CTF to speed up the pace, but that's really the only change. There is nothing we can do to remove/disable ubers (and we really don't need to), and we aren't going to increase team sizes for CTF games and force teams to pick up more players. I think we should do some pugs on CTF maps with instant respawn and see how people like it.

#18 Taking desktop on plane in Off Topic

ive never done it personally, but several friends of mine have flown with PCs. Thrickstr came to the atlanta lan with his PC on the plane last time, i think he just packed it in a large piece of luggage and checked it. This is crazy risky, but luckily his PC made it just fine.

Thursday came out to philly for the GXL a few years ago and he broke down his computer into pieces, repacked them into the boxes they came in, packed them in his carry on, and rebuilt the system into an extra case I had when he got here.

I think your best bet is a combo of those 2 ideas. if you dont have the original boxes for the hardware just find some cardboard boxes that are the right sizes, and get a bunch of bubble wrap. Take this as carry on. If you need to take the monitor as well, walmart sells a cheap piece of luggage ($20) thatll fit a 22" LCD, just pack pillows around it. pack the empty case in a large piece of luggage or box and check it.

#12 FITES 2013 - Feb 22-24 in LAN Discussion

well im doing fites. the admins are pretty awesome and actually listen to the people who are there gaming. most lans admins are a bunch of pricks who hate tournaments, fites is the opposite. its also much closer for me than pittco.
