#17 HUD Competition? in TF2 General Discussion

So im getting 2 big things
1. should it nonstock like you can take a hud but edit it so much its not the original hud anymore?
2. should we allow already made huds the only problem i have with this is they might win just because they have a following

AnthalAs someone who has developed a HUD, here are my two cents.

First, I probably wouldn't participate. Developing a HUD is incredibly hard work, and I've already sunk dozens of hours into my HUD (from scratch, no less) which I am incredibly happy with. There is no way I'd start over.

Second, you can't really verify that something is or is not stolen. Pretty much every HUD element (not fonts or animations) is static, with the exception of X, Y, Z positions, and size. The static straight lines I use on my HUD have the same essential "code" that everyone else's straight lines use. The same thing with the missing HUD features, like spectator/teammate health.

Third, to go with my previous point, locking out existing HUDs or modifications stifles creativity. A lot of technology and entertainment is based on iterative design. There is a reason a lot of popular HUDs look similar: some people modified existing HUDs, others took inspiration from them and created their own. I know that if I could enter my HUD into a competition, I'd focus more on fixing the small bugs and pixel adjustments, iterating on things that are lackluster, and working more on the missing features.

Lastly, as mentioned above, developing a HUD is really, really time consuming. Even the "base" features (moving health/ammo elements and charge bars) can take a few days to accomplish. This turns a lot of people off. There's no click and drag interface, just editing raw res files. So you'd need to allow a few weeks or a month for this competition (which can cause people to lose interest).

I'm not saying you shouldn't do it, but you need to take a broader look at how HUDs are developed, and figure out the best way to go about this competition.

So are you saying it should be open to already made huds?

MonkeySuitRather than a competition, I'd prefer to see a comprehensive list of all the huds that are current. There are tons of them and they're all over the place. Maybe make a searchable system by their elements such as big numbers or a unique crosshair.

I was think of a competition because it would get more huds out onto the market. Also on the forums there's already a thread for huds.

brownymasterYou should definitely not be in charge/a judge of it if it happens.

Haha sure but why?

fosterIdk if making it from scratch is a good idea, a lot of huds aren't made from scratch these days, they use other huds as a base and work from there.

So what could be from scratch, the winpanel i know pisses me off but most the other stuff you can figure out by watching vids and other guides. I guess adding crosshairs like fogs and mores could be ok. I think the biggest thing would be the fonts because they take awhile to add and its very punishing if you get anything wrong.

Nin2246Would have to find something my programmer teacher used to see if the code/ script came from the internet. I don't know what she used, but some program just ran through whole program and Google searched it all.

I dont think its would need to be that extreme to see if it ripped off.

Nin2246Who would judge also? Community or just like 10 people or something?

Now that im thinking about it i think it would be better just to have the community judge it.

Nin2246Also I would suggest making all the entries to be random number so people don't pick the community favorites.

Uhh i dont follow you could you explain?

Would anyone be interested in a hud making competition? You have to make every thing from scratch form the stock resource and scripts folder. Maybe get a panel of judges to make sure the huds are original and then let the community vote on their favorite. If you guys show enough interest i wouldn't mind running it and shit.

also no already made huds
