#1 TF2Maps 72-Hour Mapping Competition in Map Discussion

Contest is now Live!

Original post:

Beginning tomorrow at 2:00 TF2Maps member Fr0z3n is hosting a mapping competition for a duration of 72 hours. Participants design, block out, and detail a new map completely from start to finish as the clock runs down and total exhaustion looms ahead! While many of the level designers taking place will be thinking of standard public play, I am certain that several will be designing their maps for competitive use instead. It's no secret that there's a shortage of custom competitive maps, so I would encourage everyone interested to watch these mappers' progress unfold over the next three days and get involved with the voting at the end. There will also be a need for play-testers to pug on these maps and give feedback while these maps are still being developed, so gather your friends and let's play some TF2!

I would also invite anyone with even a little experience with mapping to give the contest a shot, or contribute to the community in whatever way they can.

If you're also taking part and would like me to include a link to your progress here in the first post so that others can see what you're doing, then reply in the thread below.

Thanks, and have fun!

At first I thought, "no hair on those legs" and suspected another 10 year old on the forums, and then I realized it was Kip.

#67 New kind of 6v6? in TF2 General Discussion

What if there was a limit of 2 of each class per team and instead of banning weapons, each player is allowed one unlock at a time? It wouldn't help against some things (like jarate or GRU) but it would prevent things like gunboats + equalizer, or kritzkrieg + vitasaw, or FaN + atomizer/basher.

It wouldn't really make a difference for demoman though.

#87 How to Get to In-Game Comp Lobbies in TF2 General Discussion
SalamancerFOR THE RECORD - I did NOT use the term "boring" to describe 6v6 or Robin's reaction to it, nor did he. He likes the skillshots and the finely honed art of TF2. He just stopped watching because he finds metagame and strategy shifts to be more interesting to watch - and he is pretty heavily involved in DOTA.

I wonder if he's seen Boink's recent spy plays on process... if that isn't a sudden creative shift in how 6s is played, I don't know what is.

#74 How to Get to In-Game Comp Lobbies in TF2 General Discussion
ScorpiouprisingI'm so weirded out by this news. On the one hand, "Yay!" they acknowledge that comp exists and are trying to create a format. On the other hand, it seems like they hate the pinnacle of competitive play!

I have a feeling that Sal added the "ever" to his post by himself (rather than quoting anyone from Valve directly), in the hopes that we wouldn't get too excited as a community and end up soiling our collective pants before that time has come. Even with this disclaimer, however, several of the posters in this thread came to the conclusion that we were getting a 6v6 lobbying interface added to the game, which is simply not the case, as Sal has put it so far. Goes to show how cautious you have to be when posting an abbreviated version of real conversations on behalf of other people.

"the first entirely community-created update"

This set a precedent. Now make that official pugging system you've always wanted, or Valve 6v6 Ladder, or whatever you think would make competitive TF2 a valid thing, and get it put in the game for the second entirely community-created update.

I'm guessing Sal asked them how kooky an idea they would buy?

WaldoWould you mind sending me the hammer file for this, or the original bball map if you have it? I know enough about hammer to do most of the actual map making part, but haven't learned much about triggers and scripts within the map. I'd probably be able to start implementing some of those ideas for different map geography for bball which people were talking about in the other thread.

Search for bspsrc on google, it's the map decompiler. It's a tool worth knowing about, and you probably already have the .bsp (playable map file) for ctf_ballin_sky in your own files. You can use bspsrc to decompile it into a .vmf, which is readable in hammer.

EDIT: Here you go. BSPSRC
