#26 igmdb.org fragmovie/demorender site in TF2 General Discussion

Having said that though: we've had success embedding 60 and 120fps streams on the site, which look amazing. At some point, assuming the bandwidth usage isn't going to blow us out of the water, this will become an option for movies like yours.

Hm, well that is just a direct link to the mp4, so that isn't really streaming (although your computer most likely will try to download it and play it at the same time). Y'know what I mean?

DougHey, dropbox has a stream feature. Is it possible to support it on the site?

I linked by 60fps version from dropbox as streaming and it was moved to direct link.

Yeah, I can definitely add support for it. Do you have a link to the movie you posted it under?

MightyMehttp://www.igmdb.org/?m=1210

How do I add the 60fps version as a stream?
Do I have to upload it somewhere else and then link that as a stream?

Yeah, you can link it using the mirrors tab, just like you have already added the mega.co.nz. Just click the "Add Download" button. I saw you posted the movie and am trying to get a mirror up, but mega is being really slow. If you need to, hit me up on steam and I can provide an ftp site if that'll help the uploading.

VaskieI have been trying to use the render for some PoV Team Fortress 2 demos but it doesn't seem to be working, it either says that the game is unsupported or the website times out while uploading the demo.

Error Message:

"404 - File or directory not found.
The resource you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable."

I bet your demo is pretty large, right? The form doesn't really handle large file uploads well unless you upload them to another site and use the url uploading. Sorry about that; this is on my todo list.

KanecoBut that's exactly what I'm saying, have a few presets, but those presets should be some of the most common in tf2 moviemaking (ie moviemaking huds and configs), HUDAS was never really a standard hud for moviemaking afaik. Honestly I don't need to be uploading custom files, as long as you have the 3-4 movie huds (which are all basically the same with the only difference being different elements removed) and some ability to customize graphics configs you should be good to go.

Ah cool, then we're on the same page. Maybe mdv and I can try some huds out once the TF2 rendering codes settle down a bit.

KanecoYes, thats what I meant, I have a 1920x1080 resolution and it really feels too narrow on it. But the interface itself also seems a bit outdated or not very friendly, I can't really give any specific recommendations but I feel the site would benefit a lot from a different interface. It works for what its meant to do, but it could be much better. The front page doesn't really give a feel of the purpose of the site, the archive section could be easier to navigate and go through videos, etc. Take this as some constructive criticism, Im not trying to bring you down, its a really good project, but It can still improve a lot.

Yeah, the narrowness of the site is something we've gotten complaints about before, so we're keen to listening to people mentioning it (or at least I am, haha). It's definitely good criticism and I appreciate hearing about it. Thank you.

@turtsmcgurts @unf
I agree about the ability to search through the videos. Right now you can search through the demos using http://www.igmdb.org/?page=search&stype=render however it is relatively limited as compared to what you guys are requesting.

I'll see if I can tap into the Steam API for user account creation and login and render tracking.

KanecoSounds reasonable.

As for the HUDs, Im not really a hud expert but I don't see how most are really complex, in fact I think Hudas is one of the few that really changes the main menu and a lot of stuff all together so if anything thats one of the most complex HUDs.

When you add that costumization support you might want to look into moviemaking huds (which are basically default huds with elements edited out, or with everything but the killfeed removed) and moviemaking configs. Some popular tools that use this huds/configs are lawena or Source Recording Tool.

Also, I don't really feel comfortable with the site UI, I think it's too small and not very user friendly. But the project does have a lot of potential. Keep up the good work.

I think the biggest issue with the huds is that you'd have to have it configured on your own computer and know exactly what files to upload. I think a better solution would be to upload a bunch of preset huds (competitive, movie maker, etc) and allow the user to pick one they want to render with. Then we don't have to deal with any funky files being uploaded.

As far as the UI goes, if you have any recommendations I'm all for hearing it. The layout for the movie page was essentially redone from scratch in the last few months. When you say "too small" you mean too narrow?

KanecoThe logo and site "branding" are too similar to imdb, and I wouldn't want to mess with them.

The demo render looks awesome but I really think you should have more options or a way to costumize the end result (ie, change hud, etc...)

The branding and logos are really just placeholders right now. Someone came forward to create some logos for the site but they have disappeared since.

As for the custom render hud, that definitely is something we want to add on, however most huds are really complex. Right now the main focus is to fix any rendering issues that pop-up (a few were fixed a few minutes ago) and to finalize the site so that you aren't forced to log into the site to view anything. Releasing to the public is something we've been striving for for a long time.

SoupyI get a server error when trying to use the demo render, is that normal?
Also, this is an amazing service.

If the demo is really big it might be timing things out, so maybe try zipping it first and then uploading. See if that works.

mdv asked me to register here as I'm the main programmer behind igmdb.org. I'm going to try and reply as best I can if issues come up.
