Ly honestly cares more about tf2 than anyone else I know by a huge margin. He wants to get better like most people want to breathe. He is constantly asking me questions about tf2 and lately it has been getting harder and harder for me to answer them because he is catching up to me so fast.
Speaking of fast, he is one of the very few demos in esea(not just open) that legitimately cares about getting to mid on time and it shows in his rollouts and jumps in general. He spent hours trying to do a hypothetical air pogo on the gully rollout I proposed that would save like a second but was several time harder than every other rollout combined including the kaidus process air pogo. He got it eventually btw but it proved to inconsistent to be worth learning for us mortal jumpers. As a scout it is tougher to play against him on mids than most of the demos in open playoffs because he gets there on time.
I love most of the people on his team and some of them have great dm and positioning for their experience, but honestly ly did almost all of the calling for them. What to do on mids, when and how to push, what to focus etc. The stats didn't often show it but with groden on the bench ly was the backbone of his team for sure.
His dm is definitely his weakest aspect and I think that's partly because he'd rather practice rollouts or go over demos than play dm but I'll pester him to do that more. The other half being exactly what Plinko said, he was doing so much of the calling that it certainly hurt his ability to do his own role and if you put him on a team that can let him focus on his own play I imagine he will start putting out the fat damage.
Mid/high open is probably a good fit for him right now but with the right team and a few more hours in dm every week he'll be IM capable after a couple seasons.
tl;dr Ly is one of the fastest improving/most dedicated demos in tf2 right now and you want him on your team.
