The Plight of a former Pyro main

I used to main pyro and i have this nagging habit of switching straight to the secondary after something is in the air. I play soldier, so it's not terrible, but it's problematic due to weapon switch times. I don't have this problem if I know I'm wearing gunboats, but if i have the shotgun, I use it immediately.
Is there a way to break this habit? Is it really that big of an issue?

Shotgunning things that you juggled into the air is a good thing.

If you can land a decent meatshot 90% of the time I don't see why being able to keep a rocket back would hurt in the long run of a fight.

as a pocket the only time when you don't want to take out your shotgun whenyou play too much tr_rocket_training and then having someone popped into the air bring back PTSD-like reflexes to airshot the guy

otherwise its a good habit and works best with scouts because they'll probably be the easiest to target after a good rocket -- a good one being one that does good damage and knocks them in a direction like an airblast. typically trying to airshot decent roamers is pretty hopeless and it'd be better to use those rockets when hes closer to the ground. in regular situations rockets are more revered because of the splash damage being able to give more to everyone so its a lot better in almost every other situation.

there's some other stuff like baiting scouts with a shotgun but it's not too important for a beginner.

It's a very small subset of situations where pulling to shotgun is the best idea... Saying that it always is retarded. Regardless no one can magically make you do something. Play more and it will go away if you actually think while you do stuff.

Play MGE a lot. You will be punished for switching weapons like that which will force you to stop.

As mentioned: if you can reliably hit the meat on a scout after popping them into the air, there is nothing wrong with it. I would, however, recommend not doing this against any other class with a buff (excepting *maybe* the demo) as it could take more than one shot.
