An Ode To TF2

Yeah, I'm a Team Fortress 2 player.

Yeah, I shout "Pootis" to people wearing TF2 merch.

So what? I do it because they're like me. They see the world for what it really is. When I utter that phrase to a fellow fan, it's with the understanding that we're both in this thing together. We can both understand things at a deeper level.

People make jokes about how TF2 fans pretend to be more intelligent, but it's true. We are. And because of this game, this masterpiece, us like minded intellectuals can interact and communicate without having to acknowledge those lesser people.

Yeah, I'll eat sandviches off the ground. Because that's what Heavy would have done, and I think of myself as a Heavy, as any intelligent gamer would.

Thank you Robin Walker.

Thank you Dave Riller.

Thank you for giving us a community where we can all move forward to a better tomorrow through strategy and comedy.

Thank you.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to play TF2. The gameplay is extremely complex, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the mechanics will go over a typical player’s head. There’s also Heavy’s philosophical outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The players understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depth of the gameplay, to realise that it's not just complex- it says something DEEP about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike TF2 truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Pyros’s existential catchphrase “Mmmh Mmmph,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Valves’s genius unfolds itself on their computer screens. What fools.. how I pity them.
