TF2 Crashing instantly after launch

Friend recently got a new laptop and wants to play tf2 on it, however he tells me it instantly crashes after launching it.

Computer specs
-Windows 8 (Standard?)
-8GB RAM

I had this problem happen to me, I just reinstalled because I'm so knowledgeable and it actually worked. Not going to recommend it though, I'm sure there's a reason why this is happening and I'm sure people will be able to help you out.

if he has a custom hud he needs to verify his game files (if he hasn't yet)
if not then idk

Is he playing in fullscreen have him try in windowed. Try running steam with administrator rights.
