mat_viewportscale is broken?

I usually play with mat_viewportscale at 0.6, but ever since the christmas update having viewportscale at anything other than 1 makes my screen a big pink blob (this http://i.imgur.com/Phsoi.jpg).
I can't run the at full resolution, and so I'd have to go back to fullscreen + lower res if game this remains broken.
Any fix? Everywhere I've looked says it's broken with no fix.
Alternatively, is there any way to play at a lower resolution and also have windowed mode on?

We won in this game 4/5 last caps because we went through bottom/flank and capped the point because it was wide open, not being covered by scouts.
You could have fragged 5 people as sniper from main and we still would have won because nobody was covering that exit.
