Or you can play on 1024 x 600 which is 16:9 aspect ratio and a low res that can have higher hz.

Actually, I am experiencing the same drops. I believe the update may have broken something/ made dx8 even worse than Valve is already making it.

I have pretty good DM and decent gamesense, but just need more experience to improve. I am getting a 120hz monitor soon. I played on a team for a season before it died and am looking for an any level team that will scrim often so that I can get more experience with 6's. I can play both passive and aggressive and can make most scrims.
