Why did we manage to derail this thread aswell ;_;
On the topic of DX9 v DX8:
There are some people who use it because they like the way it looks, so aside from those people, if we could get the same FPS if not better with DX9 that we get with using DX8 right now, we wouldn't mind switching to DX9. The problem is TF2 has terrible optimization.
TL;DR: We don't really care about what DX we are using, we just want good frames.

Didn't someone email mcjohn about the performance update a few days ago and he said it was coming soon and that they haven't done anything to affect the performance in the past few patches
Also, if they ported TF2 to Source 2 then they would probably just port the base game with no hats or inventory or weapons, just stock weapons because it would be too hard to port every single weapon and hat and trading and weapon mechanics
they should just do that to be honest, port the game to source 2, balance the shit out of it with only stock weapons (so we dont mess up the unlocks if one of the stock weapons gets changed), then add weapons

Porting TF2 to a newer engine would be a matter of re-using major existing game assets(models, animations, textures) in the new engine, then re-implementing stuff like lighting, particles, physics via the new engine. Additionally, most of the FPS optimisation that will come from switching to a new engine will very likely come primarily from the engine being able to utilise the GPU more efficiently for FPS-heavy stuff like particles, materials and lighting. The current models and textures in TF2 are actually reasonably well optimised, besides which, polygons are probably the least FPS-intensive assets in a modern game engine like Source 2.
Of course, the amount of work this would take, and whether or not they'd be willing to put in the effort I can't say.

would source 2 make the game more optimized overall? What does it add that Source 1 doesn't have?
Tripzwould source 2 make the game more optimized overall? What does it add that Source 1 doesn't have?
An increase in fps stablility, ability to add more complex textures, animations and more advanced ui
Just take Dota 2 as an example of what source 2 can change

valve never said that they weren't porting tf2 to s2, they said that it wouldn't happen anytime soon when discussing matchmaking earlier this year
TF2 is still valve's weird little permanent work-in-progress, they've always made that clear, and I doubt they're going to add such a huge mode like matchmaking just to ditch it and make TF3 instead
