Rendoasnot every player knows who you are or that you're Black

name one person in the scene who thinks tasheem is white lol

u weirdos all keep bringing up all this theoretical doomsday shit like RGL giving "passes" or "verifying skin color" to dance around the tangible situation at hand, which is that someone who literally everyone knows is black got both reported and banned for saying the n word in a scrim

why is rgl still doing this ban shit with chatlogs with scrims anyway. what's the fucking point of it. it only leads to retarded drama like this. from my own experience, i had an admin breathing down my neck based on a report to change the word retard, and when i replied to ask if something similar was alright, i got zero response, as if they're overworked on retarded reports and don't even talk to the people they're "policing" is rgl taking notes from american police?? I know theres prolly a couple of people who try to fix this shit from the inside, but damn which retard decided to go ahead with the ban on indecency

Never understood the need for online communities to put a blanket ban on saying “nigga”. I have yet to see an actual argument by someone moderating a community as to what bases it as a slur and why black ppl who are known to the community or outright tell you that they are black aren’t allowed to say it or use it when talking to others. Just seems so petty.

I would have literally no idea if it weren't for this thread. I only got back into this game recently. I don't know who most people are. If I saw those weapons in a match, I'd have reported it too and assumed it was some edgy homophobic racist. I've run into this issue in my PUGs, where someone made a joke about their own ethnicity and someone who didn't know what their background is because all they see is a username was upset. I think it's difficult to selectively enforce.

This is the kind of remark that makes me assume everyone I encounter saying the N word in this game isn't Black. Like, yeah, discrimination based on race is racism by definition. But it's a word that has been used in systemic violence against Black people. When they say it, they're reclaiming it for themselves, not for others who haven't experienced the centuries of systemic antiblack violence, who don't know the real pain of the word and the actions behind it. Ruby Bridges is still alive. This stuff wasn't all that long ago, and it's still happening. Not being able to say a word that isn't ours is nothing compared to that.

I have nothing to offer towards the argument about what words should be allowed. To me though it's really questionable that rgl does not give any warnings on this topic and just heads straight to a 2 week ban on somebody with no prior infractions. Imagine a new player using words that they use IRL everyday where nobody bats an eye and then they get a sudden 2 weeks ban for it lol when it's not directed at anybody.

As a black person, I've always been really careful just cause I know this is the type of thing that might happen out of nowhere. I know a lot of black ppl that have to hard code switch to not get ostracized (I'm not talking about just the nword, and not just about tf2).

I'm glad indecency is just playing the game and not giving a shit...

Def should be given a warning and have it overturned rather than a two-week ban with no communication.

I just don't understand why RGL is allowed to police scrims when they don't provide servers and they don't assist in setting up the scrims (It's not guaranteed that everyone who sets up scrims uses their Discord to do so). Does using their config really mean they're allowed that much power? If I make up a config that is nearly identical to the RGL ruleset with like, three changes, does that no longer make it RGL sanctioned and they aren't allowed to ban you over what you do in it? Why is it they've made distinctions that they do not make bans over actions in pugs despite most people using the exact same config?

Everyone's focusing on the banned for saying the n word while being black stuff but nobody is acknowledging the pretty clear homophobic tones to the bind or his weapon so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it's kind of understandable he's banned based on rgl's 0 tolerance policy regarding this stuff. I would agree that getting triggered over a bind is pretty sad but people have been banned over binds before so I'm not sure why this is so surprising

The reason is cause they have all the power and we can't do anything about it pretty much. The only thing you can do about it is change leagues and that's probably not happening

But some of these are morons in pugs and while talking to their team in mumble and streaming and, except for a couple of outlier moments, RGL does not enforce the same, "behavior policy" in those environments. So it's not actually stopping the toxic people from people toxic.

I also don't quite get why if a team is super toxic you would want to scrim with them again.

RendoasI agree that in virtually every other context no non-Black person should tell you how to use/not use the N word. I think it becomes an issue in online spaces because not every player knows who you are or that you're Black; you can't see a player's skin color, so if someone has no idea who you are or what you look like, and all they see is the N word, they might assume that the league is fine with racism. I don't really know how they could resolve this unless they actually had predominantly white staff handing out N word passes after demanding to see the color of someone's skin. And if they somehow made that work and not be really awkward/bad optically, how would people who don't know you know that it's okay for you to say the N word? Would the league require a tag to denote your pass/skin color? I just don't know how it could possibly work and not cause other issues.

Easy and sane solution: allow the n word in certain contexts and disallow it in others. People can then report you if you use it in a very bad way to someone and you deserve to be banned. This is (kinda) how Europe does it but won't happen because RGL thinks they're like Google or Meta.

clear homophobic tones? if niggas really wanna get into it rap and homophobia are damn near synonymous, like theres tons of songs i listen to on my stream that would have whoever reported me as well as the admins foaming at the mouth which seems racist in itself, like its not my fault that you people have snowflake skin because this ban and all the other bans for black ppl shouldnt even exist or be an arguing point, especially in my case because i love the song and named it after the guy who died, and i just say rap lyrics randomly which is why its a bind in the first place, same with the other binds i have of rap lyrics, by that same logic what would happen if i played this walking into rgl lan? am i getting banned or getting walked out the venue? what about my stickies? because whoever i kill in a freezecam in a scrim or match technically has to see it, is that now gonna be a problem? thats wat im saying the shit is such a fucking joke lol, nor is it consistent anywhere.

There not gonna be a unban? The way I think about it is, I use the word 'man' a lot, some people 'dude', I think depending on where you grow up it's different but they can all basically be used the same, replacing each other and for him it's normal like man or dude would be normal for other people. It's hard to change habits. This ain't about being a piece of crap in the way he used the word. Just remove the ban, like I assume you made this thread cause you attempted to contact them and were told tough shit. I hope one of the dudes in charge can reverse this and you can get back to what you do.

If it's unclear, I was being somewhat facetious; I was saying that it's impossible to know someone's race and whether they should be allowed to say the N word in a normal game of TF2 or through the RGL website (like, if they never looked at your content or this website), so the only way I could think of would be to slap some kind of "can say the N word" tag onto RGL profiles and require the tag in-game when saying the N word so other players know it's fine, which would, of course, be all kinds of absurd, in part because white mods telling Black people they're "allowed" to say the N word is bad optics.

That being said, I do hear what you're saying re: the code switching. I'm too white to have anything meaningful to say to that. I'm sorry.

indecencyif niggas really wanna get into it rap and homophobia are damn near synonymous

I acknowledge that a lot of rap and hiphop contains homophobic lyrics/imagery, but I don't think it should just be taken for granted and glossed over as society (hopefully) moves forward. I like the genres, but as a queer person I do find it upsetting to be jamming out and be hit with "faggot" or whatever. I don't think it's wrong to enjoy the content necessarily, but I think it's important to think about the kinds of things we let be normalized.

In an interview with Variety, Lil Nas said

“The honest truth is, I don’t want to speak on a lot of the homophobia within rap because I feel like this is a very dangerous playing field,” he told the magazine when asked about the anti-gay statements from a variety of fellow rappers lately, including hateful statements from DaBaby that have gotten him booted from a number of festivals and sent his career into free fall. “It’s more for my own safety rather than anything else.”

I think it's sad that this man feels unsafe speaking out against homophobia in his own community. Just something to think about.
