#864 MAJOR TF2 update for 6/18/14 (6/19/14, Love & War) in TF2 General Discussion

What the fuck are these changes.

I've had a pair of them for about 6 months.

If FPS games are a huge thing for you then nothing beats a 120hz monitor, but every single other activity you do on your computer is improved by having a high quality IPS monitor, including every game that isn't an FPS.

#190 ESEA and CEVO in TF2 General Discussion
KanecoAlso squid, that skyride post you used as base of your argument in the first post is from a person totally out of touch with the scene and probably still bitter with it. The ETF2L admin team has some of the most helpful, competent and genuinely interested group of people I have had the pleasure to deal with.

To say that I'm bitter would be an understatement for sure, but that's not really going anyway to refute what I'm actually saying.

ETF2L having neither the drive nor resources to improve themselves in any significant way has been a running theme pretty much as long as 6v6 has been a thing, as you will find that anyone who's expended any real amount of time and effort to improving our scene over the last few years will attest to.

ETF2L has played host to some really great guys throughout its existence, guys I'm sure you'll see in paid positions in the big bad world of esports in the future. However the simple fact is that it's never managed to achieve anything beyond minor and incremental improvements.

I wish you all the best in the clearly inevitable switch to CEVO, but ask yourself this: How are they going to pay for this supposed to prize pool, vast growth and possible LAN finals? I can promise you that shit is not cheap, and speaking as someone who was actually involved with trying to bring TF2 to Dreamhack, I can assure you the money isn't coming from sponsors.

#234 The ESEA abuse thread in TF2 General Discussion
r4ptureESEA installed malware onto your computer, malware that does not go away after you uninstall the ESEA client. I'm not talking about the bitcoins, the ESEA client allows ESEA full access to your PC, and the ability to change, remove, or add files and browse your filesystem as the law suit in New Jersey revealed.

That's completely unnacceptable and I'm not backing them up or anything, but you are aware that you implicitly give this permission every single time you download any file of any kind to your computer right?

Rikachudo you mean we should not go to etf2l? and instead go to cevo?

I'm suggesting you stay with ESEA. Trust me if you think the level of response from ETF2L admins in this thread is even remotely indicative of their day-to-day league running, you've got another thing coming.

ETF2L was a brilliant website and idea that was created in the first few months of TF2's lifespan, which has been passed down along a line of increasingly less competent admins. They've never seen providing any kind of esports element to the game as a goal. Ever since the original German consortium that created it left, it's leadership for any given year has been completely content with providing nothing more than an above average free league with no promotion or hype.

Regardless of the transgressions you feel ESEA has visited on the community in the past, the overall experience you will get with any league will be inferior in every aspect. Dropping support for ESEA is cutting off your nose to spite your face.

#217 The ESEA abuse thread in TF2 General Discussion

As a community, you have something that has been the envy of every other competitive TF2 scene around the world for years: a well run league with a solid prizepool, Anti-Cheat, and a LAN finals.

We had almost exactly the same discussion surrounding ESL vs ETF2L several years ago. Although the motivations and build up are different this time, the pros and cons being thrown around are identical.

Please do not make the same mistake.

#48 TF2 Stream Viewership in TF2 General Discussion

I could practically write a book on this topic and have over a year's worth of data and graphs to back up my claims, but comparing it to other esports heres the problem.

Consistency.

That's it. It's genuinely that simple. Casts and/or games are organised far too late, teams don't have their shit together, and neither do any of the casting orgs right now. Right at the start of TFTV EU, we had games organised literally a week in advance. That gives you time to promote, get hype going, inform reddit, etc. That doesn't happen now because nothing is organised.

There's also the fact that, with the exception of Pledge, pretty much all of the original big names are gone and while there's a few newer people who're doing a great job like Slin, Spin, Mia and a few others i'm forgetting to mention, the quality of casters in general just a lot lower and you're kidding yourself on if you don't think this is the case.

The running theme throughout TF2's history has been a lack of consistency and effort. While this community is truly one of nicest, most generous and friendly communities I've ever seen, god help anyone who asks the community to do something that takes more than 30 seconds.

It was and might still be possible to sell TF2 to the masses as a major esport. Despite being 6 years old, it's very current, very popular, and most importantly is actually a good FPS game. To do though would take a near impossible u-turn on the way this community reacts to things.

#72 Government Shut down? in Off Topic

This perhaps sounds like a loaded question, but have any of you seriously considered moving due to the unbelievable shit that goes down in your country on a near weekly basis?

From where I'm sitting, I'm looking at the US, and then I'm seeing the UK going the same way. If Scotland doesn't get Independence next year, I certainly don't see myself still living here 10 years from now.

#164 Why do so many people bash 9v9? in TF2 General Discussion

If you're looking at it from an esports perspective, the resources thing is kinda true. It's this weird harry potter-esque "neither can live while the other survives" thing. The fact they both exist is a testament to the fact that there's enough people willing to play both, but realistically when you have two competing game modes trying to be the incarnation of competitive TF2, it's hard to present it to sponsors, ignoring entirely that it means you have double the work to cover, cast, play, manage, admin, etc.

RussianGuyovichskyrideRussianGuyovichThe Twitch channel subscription is enough.
TFTV+ gets you a lot more than a Twitch subscription, and TFTV ends up with almost twice the money in their pocket at the end of the month. You've still paid the same amount of money, so what's the problem?

No

I relinquish my position. Truly, your skills of persuasion and debate are unparalleled on this earth.

#298 mge alts eXposed in TF2 General Discussion
yphthe amount of unwritten moral code in mge is laughable
would be a lot funner if people just didn't give a fuck and played to win, guess the middies must be hit though..

I don't think that's really the issue.

It depends why you play MGE, and there seems to mainly be 2 perspectives:
1) To improve your DM
2) Because you enjoy the competition of MGE itself

The problem is that doing what is necessary to win (i.e. taking that 2nd perspective to heart) isn't really the most effective way to improve your DM. Most of the autism in this thread and others like it comes from the friction between those 2 perspectives.
