#1617 PC Build Thread in Hardware

#1617
Yeah but we're talking about amazon.
If it's that old it would either
a) not be in stock at all
b) or be close to the release price.

Case in point the only 7970 I could find was 300£. Even on amazon an RX 480 is cheaper than that. And more of them in stock, that's saying something.

Faster and cheaper.

Why the fuck would you search for a GTX 780?
It's been over 3 years since it has been released.

Also define "ok", "ok", "games" and "decent quality".

There are lots of things you could do. But it all hinges on the answer to the standard question #1:
Budget?

#24 ETF2L Season 25 announced in News

#15

ETF2L General Rules3.9 Teams may request a pause if problems occur

Teams may request a pause at any time during a match. Reasons for pausing can include:

– Player drop

– Server problems

– The match is unplayable due to network issues

If you need to pause, you must clearly request a pause and give a reason for it (for example: “Pause please, player drop”). The other team is then required to pause at the first appropriate time (e.g. not in the middle of a push). Teams must pause within 15 seconds of being asked. Not responding to a pause request will lead to penalties like a minor warning accompanied with the forfeit of the round in question, or, in extreme cases, a major warning and forfeit of the map.

You may not resume the game under any circumstances without giving proper warning to the other team.

Each team has the right to one pause per map.

A pause may not last longer than 5 minutes.

If your opponent allows a pause longer than 5 minutes or more than one pause you are expected to extend the same courtesy to them.

Killing the other teams momentum isn't nice but understandable.
Since you can't disprove the existence of network / pc / mumble issues anyway, especially not within 15 seconds while playing, which you would have to do, to be sure the round won't be forfeited, you can generally request one 5 minute pause per map as it is right now.

I'm actually sad.
Locked CPU but Z (overclocking) motherboard.
RAID1? Just why.
The PSU is garbage as well.

But a Quadro for games? Not only that but a 5 year old Quadro? That's borderline criminal. 5 year old GPUs shouldn't be sold as new.

Maybe sell one fo the 850 Evos to boost your budget a bit.

Otherwise a 360 is probably your best bet. If you're willing to wait a bit for a slightly higher budget you might be able to get an RX 460 for around 100£. http://skinflint.co.uk/?cat=gra16_512&xf=9809_11+1953+-+RX+460#xf_top

There also seem to be even cheaper 360s. http://skinflint.co.uk/?cat=gra16_512&xf=9809_9+1536+-+R7+360#xf_top

#110 Crowns are gold at Insomnia58 in News

I wrote "how much of an advantage" not "is it an advantage".
But thank you for explaining that it's an advantage not having to play while maincalling anyway.

GazThey should have asked the other 5 teams before the LAN. This wasn't decided democratically.

Do you think the other teams should be consulted for roster upgrades as well? Those aren't decided democratically either.

None of this should be democratic. This isn't like mercs where you have "agreed" to play against a certain team and now they "want" to "swap" a player. Any team is free to show up to LAN with the roster they signed up and they are free to sign up the best roster they can get. Whether or not they can sign up with a coach is decided by the tournament admins or whoever else made the rules. Those can ask the teams for input and can just as well ignore their suggestions. No democracy needed.

Honestly I was fine with kaidus maincalling as coach because of how it came to be.

What you should compare isn't Crowns with kaidus maincalling on coach vs Crowns without kaidus but rather Crowns with kaidus maincalling on demo vs Crowns with kaidus maincalling on coach.
I'm pretty sure kaidus would've played if he could have done so. How much of an advantage was not having to play while maincalling? I don't know. Would Full Tilt have won if kaidus had played? I don't know. Would froyo have won vs Crowns if kaidus had played? I don't know.

What we do know is that without kaidus maincalling Crowns simply doesn't work. It was built around this. Without kaidus maincalling they had to switch Stark and kaptain so Stark could maincall and I think we can all agree that didn't work nearly as well.

So for the sake of getting to watch great TF2 I'm fine with it just this once.
However it should be banned as soon as possible. For Crowns it was the only way to keep up their level of play, maybe it was a slight upgrade. A new team that isn't depended on an injured maincaller could just get a straight DM upgrade on one class while improving their maincalling a bit at the same time.

Coaching between maps isn't preventable. Coaching between rounds wouldn't be possible outside of LAN without ~2 minute tactical pauses between each round or plugins. Allow it or ban it but be clear about it.

Depends on your budget and how much performance you want.

Technically the Celeron G3900 got a better price to performance ratio than the i3-6100 since it gets you about 45% of the performance at 40% of the price.

Spoiler alert: Great price to performance doesn't equal great performance. It can just as well be terrible performance for a song.

Because so many other laptops offer the same at a fraction of the price.

Hell you don't even need a laptop to get the same features.

SteveCGet a MacBook Air sheet of paper
- It's quiet, there aren't any fans
- You can pick it up with 2/3 fingers without fear of dropping it and if you drop it there won't be any damage
- Battery life is hella infinite
- User experience
- Apple makes a consistently great product for 2000 years

This isn't about open air vs blower. The "black brick" designs are simple the lowest cost version the AIBs could come up with. I'm not saying you can't build a good blower style cooler, but at the point where you go full plastic shroud and only use one fan not for noise related reasons but because half the fans means half the money spent of fans then that single fan is probably shit.
Those coolers are also typically just reused from old designs, which have a different die size so not all heatpipes are in contact with the die and so on.
Sometimes the manufacturer also locks the power target at a lower point than on the more expensive cards so they can't boost as high. After all there wouldn't be a point to buy those if there was no benefit.
Basically what I'm saying is black/grey blower cooler are the cheapest cards and they are so for a reason. Either because the cooler is shit or because they are artificially limited so they will be slower than the more expensive cards.
In this case since the reference cards are also more expensive these might actually be slower than the reference design. Which means all the reviews don't mean shit anymore.

About that test: I just skimmed it but they tested two cards with temperature target 80°C and what a surprise, both cards ran at 80°C.

Also let's take a step back and look at some benchmarks
This is without DX12 (except for Tomb Raider which runs worse on DX12, gg techpowerup) and Vulkan.

https://tpucdn.com/reviews/ASUS/RX_470_STRIX_OC/images/perfrel_1920_1080.png

10%. Not 20%. Even less favourable for the 1060 with DX12 or Vulkan.

-mobo that isn't low end garbage
-8GB RAM because you asked for cheaper alternatives and I have no idea what you're going to use this build for.
-faster SSD because why the hell not
-RX 470 should overclock a bit higher and can keep a higher boost clock because of the lower power consumption so in the end it's almost the same speed except it's cheaper.
-PSU with a reasonable wattage (<400W build, come on)

I'll be on vacation now, someone else take over please.

If the Internet was right then your current motherboard is µATX. The one I recommended is also µATX. Same size. That's what standards are for.

That should be a µATX mobo so I'll go with µATX to be safe.

The reasonable choice would be this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i3-6100 3.7GHz Dual-Core Processor ($110.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: ASRock B150M Pro4S Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($73.99 @ Newegg)

You'll probably have to use an fps config anyway to get stable fps. That's just TF2.

Now you could get a different mobo that would let you keep your RAM but because TF2 is weird the RAM should actually get you more of an increase in fps than a 40$ more expensive CPU.

That's not saying there aren't any faster CPUs. But we're talking 5% for 50$ in case of an i3-6320 and 60$ on top of that for another 5% with the i5-6600. Twice the money for 10% just isn't worth it imho (only +50% if we count mobo and RAM, still not worth it).
Fun fact: The i5-6500 should actually be slower than the i3-6320 if TF2's behaviour hasn't changed since the last time I tested it.

SetsulPSU is fine, although you'd need a molex to 6/8pin adapter if you were to get a GPU that needs two 6/8pin connectors. Wattage should be fine though.
If he wants a slightly better PSU that actually comes with two pcie power connectors I'd recommend the CX450M. It's actually reasonably priced and quite decent. If he wants something much better then the question is either how much better or how much is he willing to spend on it.

#7 FPS Issue. in Q/A Help

The tearing is most likely making it look worse than before now actually, so I really think you bought in the wrong order, but I guess that's none of my business.

You'll need a new motherboard as well. So what size does your case support?

EDIT: Zen hype is destroying my sentences.
