#1 Spiritual Successor? in Videos

Thorin's Thoughts - Mods Are Esports' Past and Present (General)

Show Content
Then we go back to Quake again, the original Quake. Original Quake, a mod for that game was Team Fortress. Now again, Team Fortress had its own different spiritual successor in Team Fortress Classic which was made for Half Life, again itself a licensed engine of Quake. And Team Fortress was an underground game but it had its own popularity back in the days when I played Quake, it’s just that the entire scene, even people who played normal Quake was very very small. Obviously Team Fortress then under Valve with Team Fortress Classic becomes Team Fortress 2 later on, again a game that has a cult following but wasn’t really a big esport. Well what’s the reason why I’m bringing this up now, because that would seem like a bit of an abstract one right. Well because Team Fortress clearly leads into a game by Blizzard Software, Overwatch right? How can this not be called a spiritual successor for Team Fortress. It contains some of the same concepts. I don’t think its any coincidence that so many of the Overwatch pros came over from Team Fortress 2 and it wasn’t people from Quake or Counterstrike or other games typically who will come around, it was largely those people especially the western players. You look down teams like Houston Outlaws, Dallas Fuel, these are littered with players. I think Misfits maybe, oh well not Misfits. Florida Mayhem, these team are littered with players who are coming from the Team Fortress 2 scene because that’s the game they see kinda as the next chain in the evolution.

#4 My game crashes when i join a server. in TF2 General Discussion

I had the same problem a few weeks ago. It turned out to be some random file from an old no-hats mod from like 2016, which no one would have ever been able to tell me was the problem.
I suggest removing all of your custom files (HUD, sounds, etc) and config, "-autoconfig"ing your game, and start plugging things back in while joining servers in between to see where the problem is.

#1 Missing Tagg Video? in Videos

I distinctly remember a Tagg video from around a year ago, where he discussed his burnout after playing TF2 for 7000 hours over 7 years. I thought it was an amazing talk at the time, and when I went back to watch it again today, I couldn't find it on his channel. Does anyone know anything or am I just insane?

#7 Nerf Ping Crybaby Tears in The Dumpster
tsarWhat happens when someone is spiking to 500 ping, everyone stutters with them?

That would certainly be fair, but it would suck. I've never played with anyone who has massive ping spikes before though and I don't think it's that common to have 500 ping spikes every game.
It's probably easy to have a ping cap of 100. That's why I'm asking if a plugin of this sort is possible.

#5 Nerf Ping Crybaby Tears in The Dumpster

That's not the point. If we're playing them on a Dallas server where we're getting consistently higher ping, we still have an advantage whether or not they complain about it. I want to play them as fair and balanced as possible so the only deciding factor is skill.

Do people not already have to get used to different pings on different servers?

Nobody's forcing you to use a plugin. I'm not asking for this to be on every server. It's just something my team and I would like to play with on our own server. Instead of fighting over whether we're using our scrim partner's Chicago server or our Dallas one, we'll be playing on an even field.

tsarAlso, what happens when there's a Euro or South American?

I've never played against Euro or a South American player, but I suppose I would just...turn it off?

It's like a LAN. Except instead of everyone having 2 ping, everyone has 80.

#1 Nerf Ping Crybaby Tears in The Dumpster

I'm just so tired of people bawling their eyes out that they only lost because they had 80 ping while we had 60. Is there any way to make a server plugin that would give everyone on the server just enough fakelag to match the player with the worst ping and then adjusts it to keep it matching throughout the game? I never want to hear this excuse after a scrim ever again.

#17 spoiling match results in title in Site Discussion
4812622bleghfarecPersonally I like having the result in the title for stylistic reasonsArguedOysterIt means I don't have to actually click on the link and start reading to find out who won.
Isn't that what news headlines are for? Glance at it and know what's up and then read the article to find out more? Personally, I like my news giving me spoilers.

There could be an option in settings so everyone is happy.

A much easier way to go about it (without having to code spoiler-hiding) would be to just write a spoiler title and a non-spoiler title for every article and letting people change their preference in options.

how is coding a preference option that switches titles as well as writing separate titles easier than coding a spoiler hider?

DarkNecridThis really isn't difficult and I dunno why people over-complicate it:

Does adding the spoilers to the title actually add anything to the overall piece that couldn't be replicated by making it the first sentence of the piece?

If the answer is no (spoilers: it is) then why do it when it clearly only subtracts by annoying people who don't want to be spoiled?

UGC gets this right...like c'mon.

It means I don't have to actually click on the link and start reading to find out who won.

#11 Should a revved heavy have immediate 540 DPS? in TF2 General Discussion

mad complicated. this ain't overwatch

if weapon damage stats require more space than THIS

and class stats take up more space than "Heavy has 300 hp and moves at 14 ft/s," you're no longer playing TF2.

#4 Should a revved heavy have immediate 540 DPS? in TF2 General Discussion
BooleanWhy not just make them fun to play and fun to play against?

I appreciate what you're trying to do, but the whole concept of heavy is that he's a defensive class with a big gun. Heavy has to be slow to keep him as a defensive class and to balance his insane DPS, and being slow just isn't fun to play as in 6s. You also have to give him loads of health to help him be defensive and to balance his slowness, and a 450 hp tank who doesn't move and shreds you at close range isn't fun to play against.

TLDR you have to change Heavy bottom up to make him fun to play with and against

WandumArguedOysterwitness the INSTANT fear on this man's face as he realizes his profession and livelihood exists under Blizzard's fascist gripyes blizzard is definitely a fascist extension of the regressive left because a separate organization decided to suspend one of their players because he acted like an asshole

Dallas Fuel banned him becaue that's what Blizzard wants. They're sucking up to them or Blizzard is forcing them to suspend him under the table. Why else would they ban one of their own salaried players while keeping him on payroll. I can't think of a single team in esports history that has willingly banned one of their own players.

If you think telling someone to suck a dick warrants a two thousand dollar fine and being banned from your entire first season after you've signed away everything to Blizzard, I don't know what to say. Maybe all leagues in every esport should start doing the same thing eh
