"Remove Random Crits"

Video

I know this discussion has kinda run on forever within the casual community, but I'm interested in what people think the probability of this actually happening is. After all, people like Dane seem to have somewhat of an impact on the TF2 dev team.

Also, there were some good points in there that I hadn't even considered prior to this video.

How did he make half an hour video explaining something so simple? Everybody knows what random crits are and why they have to be removed, this just looks like going over old grounds due to lack of creativity.

The dev team made that poll about it a while back, so at least they're thinking about it. I'd be surprised if we don't hear anything in the next biyearly update.

I think he's trying to appeal to the "TF2 is such a wacky game, stop taking it so seriously" crowd that wants random crits to stay even though I'm still not sure how dying to the one heavy my team cannot focus down who gets lasers every 10 seconds because people keep trying to hold W into him immediately when they respawn = wacky and fun casual game.

after not having played this game in years, i went into a pub with a friend to relive some nostalgia.

not exaggerating or bragging, but the only times i died were random crits by noobs that i have killed over and over again in those matches

its the Lord's way (Gaben) of balancing the game

because his viewer base is primarily pubbers who may not have the same outlook as long time competitive players

random crits aren't all bad, and i mean there is a reason they're there. they're to reward baddies with kills every once in a while to keep them interested. for any player other than new ones, they're a net negative to the experience

Except your chance of getting a random crit increases based on damage done in the past 20 seconds. So a random noob who dies 10 seconds after leaving spawn isn't going to be rewarded as much as that one guy who has a medic permanently glued to his rear end and doesn't die because he has more than 5 hours of experience in the game.

This is so that people who are good can deal with the inevitable blob of heavies and medics that forms.
Random crits ARE fair and balanced in a pub environment. Stfu Overwatch noobs.

I love random crits in pubs to keep me on my toes. I know anything could happen to me and it leads to both extremely funny and slightly frustrating moments.

+ I'm pretty sure the whip has 90% crit chance

VisHow did he make half an hour video explaining something so simple? Everybody knows what random crits are and why they have to be removed, this just looks like going over old grounds due to lack of creativity.

you say that but look at his audience and the majority of the people who play this game and tell me this video wasn't needed

also some of the responses in this thread spreading misinformation on the existence of crits relying on the idea that it makes the game fairer for new players only further strengthens my argument that this video needs to exist (well, that and that they didn't even bother watching it but whatever)

ah yes, without random crits how would we keep new players interested ! ! !
not like everytime an ex tf2 player introduces his steam viewers tf2 they say "random crits in a fps OMEGALUL"

also this video is a very good thing for tf2 with the ingame poll not happening too long ago, content creators like this can have a big impact on the public opinion of certain topics.

SpaceCadetbut if you remove random crits how can I kill a heavy and the 2-3 medics healing him at once in a pub?!?!

Spy, Sniper, 8 Stickies, Phlog could work potentially.

There is a lot of counters already built into the game, 1 charged headshot from a sniper kills heavy in one shot no matter how healed. Removing random crits wont change anything, it'll just make it harder for that heavy to have higher damage (mechanics of this is explained in an earlier post by someone else)

Random crits are kinda fun though.

Edit: ok i watched the video and never realized how big of an impact random crits made in the development of players and the game since i never really pubbed. i think strengthening the connection between casual and competitive play is very important for keeping this game relevant.

I have honestly tried to introduce players i met from other games to TF2 and most of them quit because "random crits are fucking retarded". Honestly they should have never made it out of beta. I have no idea how anyone could have thought they were in any way a good idea.

And yet the pyro class still exists.

It was a good video. Yes random crits are bad and we'd be better off without them but everyone here is dismissing something which he touched upon in the video. Yes leaving them in does more harm than good to the skill development of a newer player but the devs are (were) not concerned about the long term but the short term. Most video games are played by the average person for like 30 minutes and then never opened again, ever. Getting some kills DOES feel good, even if it's not deserved and helps keep a gamer playing longer and holds their interest more (compared to literally being useless and feeling useless and getting no kills). This means they play longer and are more likely to recommend the game to a friend. Or friends on their friends list will see them playing and get interested and check out the store page. The game was not always F2P. I bought it off the shelf in a store with the orange box. Lots of other people bought it for $20 (or less during sales). Even now that it's F2P there's incentive for them to have people keep playing as the TF2 economy continues to make them money. So yeah, they're bad and should probably go away, but there's financial reasons for their inclusion and I wish people could see that.
