Trying to see what PC i should get for over 500 to 600 max too play TF2 more smoothly than my laptop which costed 1000$. So far on this "gaming" laptop i bought at best buy I can only get around 100+ fps max. When i hear people with 400$ pc builds get way more. I got this laptop when i was very young and inexperienced with buying or how to buy gaming machines and obviously my dumbass made the wrong choice. So I was wondering what do you guys think?

Is this JUST for TF2? If so get an i3 8100 and an RX 560.
TF2 doesn't really scale past 3 threads and barely uses GPU.

Source parts for cheap via craigslist, newegg, ebay, and maybe aliexpress if you're a risk taker. It takes a while to find good bargains, but it is doable. If you pay MSRP for your build, you're going to be sorely disappointed at the cost to performance ratio.

Also, weight your purchasing decisions towards getting the newest and most powerful cpu you can. Apart from the fact that TF2 demands much more from your cpu than your gpu, it's generally easier and cheaper to upgrade your gpu and ram down the road than it is to get a new mobo and cpu.

Is there some special reason why this couldn't be posted in the PC Build Thread?

You could've read a bit and answered the questions already that I now have to ask.

When are you going to build it?
Do you need a monitor/peripherals?
Overclocking yes/no?

Mate we love you but no reason to go hard at him like that.
He’s clearly new to the website

Yeah but he's got to be in the hardware subforum to even post this so to not even notice the stickied big fat "PC Build Thread" right below "Start Thread" requires a worrying level of tunnel vision.

he doesn't have to go there at all, you just click forums, start thread, and then notice that there's a hardware subforum you can pick. probably a mistake not to look at hardware first, but not a big deal. might not have even realized it was a subforum, might have thought he was just tagging the post or something.

Then he didn't even try to find an answer and I am very disappointed.
I mean surely on a website called "teamfortress.tv" someone must've built a PC for TF2 before.
