gbjWhy do free video game players keep complaining about free things that get given to them [...] even discord to an extent.

Mumble was already free to users and it offered voice overlays that worked, didn't constantly ruin pugs from being affected by server downtime like Discord does, etc.

b4nny says that he doesn't minimize or discard any valid feedback from this community but every time the VoIP discussion has come up he either ignores it or just brushes any Discord-naysayers in his stream chat aside with "circlejerk", "vocal minority" and other nonsense

I've noticed a lot of people's microphones on discord are way too quiet and putting their local volume to 200% doesn't do anything.

also what are the benefits for using discord over mumble for voice comms?

I don't really pug a lot so idk why my opinions would matter and I don't think I'm going to say anything that hasn't already been said but I find faceit unenjoyable. In every pug I've played I've had to med. I've captained some teams that were great on paper and I was like ok, I'll med for this team to give us the best chance to win. And my very good pocket decides "I'll demo", my good demo decides "I'll play roamer", and my roamer is forced onto pocket. Poverty ensues and I'm left feeling like I wasted 20 minutes and I close faceit immediately. From the perspective of someone who doesn't pug much I would always rather decide what classes I play, decide what classes my players are playing than the randomness of faceit. It's so worth it to me to wait an extra 10-15 minutes for a quality pug to start. But again I don't pug much. I understand what lucrative is saying and he's making very good points. Well said Luc, but if faceit was the only option for pugs I just wouldn't pug. And I think the people who feel similarly to me are the ones adding to pugchamp. Luckily faceit isn't the only option and I still have a worthwhile option to play pugs on. For me personally there are things I'd rather do than play in the faceit chaos pugs be it 2v2, dm, jumping, surfing, etc. And what sucks is when we hear back from faceit admins saying basically "ok, ok, we hear your major concerns and we can't really fix them (subs and queuing on specific classes) but we're open to fixing the small things that don't bother people as much like elo and starting level." I understand the limitations of the system. I understand that faceit is doing what they can withing reason to cater to a small community that doesn't drive in a lot of revenue and from the bottom of my heart thank you. But as a customer I am dissatisfied with your product and I do not see myself using it often if at all.

Personally the switch to tf2pl has completely killed pugging for me.
Since I haven't actively played etf2l in a very long time I was not put in advanced. Because I've played for high teams for the past 3 offseasons or so I and feel like I'm very much capable of playing in the advanced league (I used to play pugs pretty much every day with everyone who got put in advanced and do fine). My request got denied little over a week later and after I wrote a very long essay to the admin that denied my request about why I felt like I've been placed into the wrong div. After 2 days of waiting I got a response from the admin, who told me to resend my request.
It's now been over two weeks since I sent my request. Nothing has happened. I can't bring myself to enjoy playing amateur due to the general lack of game quality compared to what I used to experience a month ago.
I would prefer not having to bring this up publicly but honestly the communication between tf2pl has been nothing short of appalling. It's extremely frustrating to just be stuck in this limbo of having to either a). spend 9 hours playing my main grinding shitty pugs that aren't fun and overall just wasting my time or b). just not play at all and spend my time doing something that isn't tf2.
I didn't intend for this post to be so long but it seems like there is just no way around it
have a nice day xoxo

You know, in Pugchamp, the only thing keeping people from playing classes other than the one they were picked on is the fact they would be banned from the service. Would it be possible to implement a similar rule within Faceit? I mean, we have these avatars to show class preference, which should be able to help captains decide who plays what--if a captain makes it clear he picked a player to play a specific class, and then that player refuses to play that class, could bans of some kind be implemented to punish players for throwing?

I mean it'd be as simple as a captain saying in chat "player x to play y" and then upgrading the Faceit logs to show who played what, and for how long.

First, Discord requires a few settings to be checked off for optimal performance, we'll try making it more obvious, but stuff like automatic gain control and hardware acceleration should probably be played with if it causes issues. If someone is extremely quiet, tell them to reset voice settings first, as internal volume levels could be completely messed up.

Second, Discord works extremely well for us because the current chatroom system in FACEIT is limiting, we'd have to have a Discord Guild for team communication AND team to user communication. We've built upon Discord voice channels because it works well and having a *third requirement* would be non-negligible and sub-optimal, setup couldn't be easily verified, etc.

Third, I'll be working on a Mumble -> Discord voice bridge that will be compatible with TF2PL *whenever I have the time to do so*, it'll end up being MIT-licensed open-source software, if you would like to contribute or start early, please contact me, but please read about these subjects before: https://mumble-protocol.readthedocs.io, https://discordapp.com/developers/docs/topics/voice-connections, and the codec OPUS. I insist on *whenever I have the time to do so*, I've committed to making HUBAR.it (and TF2PL) a day job, my priorities are in releasing the product first to make a living, then whichever better stats from demos/Mumble->Discord bridge has most interest shown.

HiipFire[*] for all the amateur players who now can't play pugs since they leveled up into advanced

This is a great, but unfortunate, example of how the whole boycott movement is not as simple or acceptable as people have made it seem. The up and coming players that have been on the grind to improve and level up are now being put in a very unfortunate position where they've leveled into a division that others have decided not to play in for personal reasons. It's not as simple as "we play here, they play there." Every division depends on each other, and they must coexist. By having all divisions populated, it puts all skill levels into context, it gives people goals to strive for, and it allows for new fresh talents to work their way up the divisions. Because of the extreme importance of all divisions, this is something that we want to address and we are looking to contact EU Advanced players who share our desire to improve and grow the competitive TF2 scene about how we can repair this situation for the betterment of the whole community.

ok but what if the skill tiers worked like this

https://i.imgur.com/x8Vlg7d.png

i know i would play a lot more pugs if i wasnt only able to play pugs where i have to med half the time.

seems like this way the hubs are a lot closer in skill level except for maybe beginner which gets worse (disparity between new players and mid open players is really high).

edit thinking about it now beginner would probably be massive and the other 2 way too small.

jetzzzzzok but what if the skill tiers worked like this

beginner would be miserable, there's too big a difference between players who have played a few seasons of competitive and are mid open or so, and those who are just getting into competitive for the first time

Faceit is very close to being great but I think some reforms need to be made for advanced and maybe high amateur. Most players who move up from amateur to advanced significantly reduce the number of pugs they play. This is creating a deadly space of territory where growth isn't encouraged. Like b4nny said: “Every division depends on each other, and they must coexist.” If invite wants continuous new blood, players of all levels need to be able to spam pugs.

If people stop pugging, the community stops improving. Most of my friends are stuck between doing 600 dpm in amateur, or advanced pugs with 50%+ invite players. One solution I see is growing low/mid/high advanced players. Maybe if low advanced was able to queue with high amateur, we could teach them to play better AND give them a place to practice once they’re in advanced.

Whatever solution we pick, something has to be done.

Pugchamp = lot's pugs
FaceIt = fewer and worse pugs
Pugchamp + FaceIt = even less pugs

Let's use as many pugging systems as possible to kill pugging entirely, that way nobody has to argue anymore.

Introducing:

  • Dave's Discord Pugs™
  • IRC Pugs 2: Electric Boogaloo
  • ESEA Pugs (Now Featuring Ranks: D-S)
  • TF2 Lobby 2: Fuck Homeland Security Edition
  • Sigafoo's UGC 16v16 Battle Royale (The deeper your circlejerk, the more players you can have on a team.)

if someone who is an admin or w/e on pugchamp can correct me please do, but I'm pretty sure there's a hidden captain elo so people who win more games on captain are more likely to get captain
