PSA: Steam privacy changes

Steam changed default privacy settings for your game inventory and playtime history. By default, only people that are on your friends list will be able to see what games you own, and how many hours you have in them. If you want to change this, you need to change your privacy settings. This stupid privacy change is also why Steam Spy (the site that tracks game time and account value) was shut down.

Figured I'd post this here, as it's kinda a big change. Plus, rip steamspy.

This means you can have a public profile and people can't see the server you're in which helps hugely with the issue of people ddosing. It's a good change from that perspective imo.

I feel like they could just introduce an option to hide what you're currently playing, rather than to hide every single game you own, along with the playtime in them. Like, I kind of get what they're going for here, but this is taking it to an extreme that nobody asked for.

You can make the changes here if you wanna set it up. By default it puts your in-game status as friends only can see.

steamLooking ahead a little, we are also working on a new “invisible” mode in addition to the already existing “online”, “away” and “offline” presence options. If you choose to set yourself to invisible, you’ll appear as offline, but you’ll still be able to view your friends list, send and receive messages. Sometimes you’re feeling social, and sometimes you’re not; this setting should help Steam users be social on their own terms. We hope to have this feature ready for beta release soon.

i have to assume 80% of the tf2 community is gonna be on this mode 24/7

Is this true though? For me it looks like I can't see the information of people that aren't in my friendlist AND also aren't in game. I can still see the information of the game when they are ingame (and also not in my friendlist). Or am I missing something?

Just a random guy, it shows the info for everybody that is ingame and not in my friendlist

Never mind, I didn't know Steam isn't showing that people are ingame when they set it to friends-only. It just shows you are online.

imo it should be more comprehensive than this

imo it should be a little more comprehensive.
The 'in game' display to show what you're playing should be public by default, but the "join game" button should be friends only by default.

This mitigates ddosing as you pretty much need everyone in the server to have "join game" set to private to prevent this. At the same time it would allow sites like steam spy to see how many users have the game launched.

Games and hours should also be public by default but you definitely should be able to make them private.

Sidularbut this is taking it to an extreme that nobody asked for.

Actually forcing people to opt-in to public data sharing is something that the European General Data Protection Regulation legally required Valve to do before May 25th of this year if they wanted to continue servicing the EU without massive fines being put on them by the EU.
