Why a new 200R? Either way at the price Corsair wants (>50$) no dust filters is just inexcusable.
Ok.
Ok. Mainstream SSD then, nothing too fancy.

Yes.

Frankly at this point I can't say how much either will be slowed down (Spectre affects both but the fix should be cheaper).
Zen isn't really going to get past 4 GHz so it'll definitely still be slower single threaded in applications that aren't affected much, especially since Coffee Lake could be overclocked to ~5 GHz, but on the other hand Coffee Lake is really going to suck now for transfering lots of small files.

I forgot to mention: VGA will be difficult, any recent GPU should support only digital.
Also: Do you want a Quadro/FirePro? https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Why-you-should-use-a-Quadro-video-card-in-Solidworks-2016-751/ Obvious shilling in the title because they want to sell Quadros but it's worth considering for the drivers since you don't need more than a midrange GPU for everything else at 60 fps or more.

I don't think anything except TF2 will be CPU limited anyway so I'd pick the CPU based on Solidworks performance vs willingness to put of with some things being much slower on Coffee Lake.
https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/SOLIDWORKS-2017-Coffee-Lake-CPU-Comparison-i7-8700K-i5-8600K-i3-8350K-1053/
1800X and 8700K would end up costing roughly the same, 1700(X) overclocked would be about the same speed as the 1800X but cheaper.

New case because the old computer is still functional; it'll probably turn into a NAS server. Any regularly shaped mid tower should be fine.

I've read into the Meltdown/Spectre issues and, from my understanding, I don't think my usage will be affected that much-- I don't use VMs for anything or do large file transfers frequently.

Probably should have expected no analog out.

I'm completely unfamiliar with workstation cards. Since the work I do in SolidWorks/Altium is far from professional (mostly viewing/editing others' designs or making small boards), I don't think I need the extra performance from a Quadro/FirePro.

Being able to run games in 2K or stream, while not a main concern, would be nice. If the budget seems overkill for the desired specs, getting a more powerful GPU is good.

I would prefer an nVidia card since CUDA drivers are nicer than OpenCL and my school uses them in the engineering/CS clusters.

I value single-threaded performance more than the advantage in rendering times, so 8700k it is.

Obviously you can get an i5-8600K instead, 32GB RAM, a 1080 or even a 1080 Ti if you downgrade some other things.
The case is slightly smaller and just an example of what you could get. It doesn't have external 5.25" slots (or any 5.25" slots really) so if you need an ODD you need to pick a different case.

Since you want it to be somewhat portable I'd actually downsize to at least micro ATX. Mini ITX is usually more trouble than it's worth.

That case isn't that much smaller so there are much smaller options.
The mobo will be slightly worse for overclocking but not much. You can check the other differences in features/connectivity yourself, you probably won't need most of it anyway. Carbon would be cheaper but 2 RAM slots aren't a good idea since you might want to add more later.

Hey Setsul or whoever answers,

So I currently have an i5 4570, 8 gb of RAM, and a GTX 970.
I want to have a second opinion on what I should do because I want to upgrade my setup.
I would like to be able to stream games like OW and Fortnite at around 150 fps on the lowest settings 1080p.
I am somewhat interested in overclocking and I would want the computer to last for a while if it's a new one.
Also I would prefer it to be somewhat mobile because I will be going to university and I want to be able to move it from my dorm to my house.

The 3 choices I came up with are:

1. Buy a new computer and sell the current one for around $500. The parts I want to keep from my current setup are my SSD and my HDD.
2. Get a second 970 and run SLI
3. Buy a new computer straight up and use my current set up as a stream PC.

If you have any better suggestions let me know, Im currently looking at a PC like this: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/hw7wwV but I obviously wont be spending $900 on the 1080 because they go on sale for around $500 from time to time. Also is it smarter to wait for Nvidia Volta or just buy the 1080, I probably wont be buying the computer for another month or two. I also need help picking out a case. Also if you could optimize the price of the build better it would be much appreciated.

Setsul, I'm looking to buy pretty much the same build as in the first half of post #2765, except with a GTX 1080ti, 2TB or 5TB HDD, and 32 GB ram (16x2). What would you recommend and would you change anything from that build with the new parts in mind (such as PSU)?

Also, if I want to back up my entire old pc, how would I go about doing it so that I can use everything on the new pc? I searched but the results were ambigious. Would I just get a 2TB hdd and copy paste things? Or is there some software that does that?

Thanks.

1. What is your budget?
2. What is the problem right now? If you're not getting enough fps in general then you need a better GPU. If you only have trouble when streaming then you only need a better CPU.
3. Forget about SLI.
4. If you're willing to set up a second pc for streaming then you can get some old dual socket server, should be fairly cheap, and you'll get better encoding performance than anything you could afford new because even if they're old a dozen cores is still a dozen cores.

If you'll buy it in one or two months you can just wait until then to figure out whether or not you're going to buy Volta. Spoiler: If it's not released then you probably won't. There might also just be another round of Pascal because Volta isn't actually faster in games according to the early benchmarks. I mean looking at the differences between Pascal and Volta.
1. New tensor cores
2. Removing the second warp scheduler dispatch unit & eliminating superscalar execution
3. Separating the Integer cores
4. Finer-grained thread scheduling

1 is absolutely useless in games.
2 is good for power efficiency, but hurts performance.
3 is useless again because it'll be mostly floats anyway. Good for adress calculations so it offsets 2 a bit.
4 isn't being used in games so far.

#2767
Budget?
What would I recommend for what? I don't know what you're going to use it for.
Also good luck getting a 1080 Ti. Ethereum exploded. Again.
2TB HDD in addition to the SSD or just an HDD?
EDIT: 2TB or 5TB HDD? What logic is that?

You'll have to reinstall the OS & programs unless you want weird shit to happen. You can copy the rest.

2.2k budget with flexibility. Yes to SDD+2TB HDD. It'll be a workstation build (Autodesk apps and rendering engines) but I also want to be able to stream and play games.

Edit: I'd want everything else on that list but would you have a different PSU in mind or RAM I meant.

Are Intel CPUs going to drop in price you think from meltdown/spectre?

Reinstalling programs is fine, and I'll be getting Win10 anyways.

Edit: Is the noctua nhd15 neccessary? Or would the noctua nh u14s would looks to be smaller work?

And no, that 1080 Ti price is not a joke.

Different PSU shouldn't be necessary but you could get 650W if you really want. https://pcpartpicker.com/product/WrNypg/seasonic-focus-plus-gold-650w-80-gold-certified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-ssr-650fx

1. Intel never does price drops.
2 .Intel says everything is working as intended.

Intel and other technology companies have been made aware of new security research describing software analysis methods that, when used for malicious purposes, have the potential to improperly gather sensitive data from computing devices that are operating as designed. Intel believes these exploits do not have the potential to corrupt, modify or delete data.

https://newsroom.intel.de/news-releases/intel-responds-security-research-findings/

Any cooler would do, but how high do you want to overclock it?

As someone summed it up:
> building a PC in 2018
> can't buy CPUs because of Spectre
> can't buy GPUs because of mining
> can't buy RAM because of smartphones

Well how flexible is your budget?

And no, that 1080 Ti price is not a joke.

Different PSU shouldn't be necessary but you could get 650W if you really want. https://pcpartpicker.com/product/WrNypg/seasonic-focus-plus-gold-650w-80-gold-certified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-ssr-650fx

Any cooler would do, but how high do you want to overclock it?

As someone summed it up:
> building a PC in 2018
> can't buy CPUs because of Spectre
> can't buy GPUs because of mining
> can't buy RAM because of smartphones

I'd be comfortable with a 5.0 overclock. Maybe I'll have to wait a bit then :/

with the price of the 1080 ti being 1200 bucks, might as well buy a titan Xp.

1. What is your budget?

My budgets around 1200-1400, I dont need any storage, a cpu cooler, and PSU. And would you recommend just sticking with my 970 for now until the GPU market settles down a little and then buy a 1080? Im looking for something like an 8700k/16gb ram/gtx 1080 set up.

the problem that I have is that I'm getting okay performance when just playing but I would like to get more consistent 150+fps and I would also like to start streaming a little bit, I also would like the computer to last around 5-7 years if possible.

Well how are they going to adress the shortages?
They certainly don't have thousands of GPUs lying around.
Just make more? Well TSMC and GF can't magically make manufacturing capacities appear out of thin air, otherwise they'd always do so and make a shit ton of money. But let's pretend AMD/nVidia are willing to throw enough money at them so they push back other customers' orders (iPhones aren't sell that well right now anyway).
We're even assuming air freight to avoid the 1 month shipping time via container.
Well then you only need to have the chips fabbed and the cards assembled and in only 3-4 months you'll have some shiny new GPUs.
Oh wait, no one knows what Ethereum will be worth in 3-4 months, so let's not throw money at this while only hoping that it doesn't crash.

Basically unless AMD/nVidia can accurately predict the price of Ethereum over the next 4+ months it makes no sense for them to change anything. And if they could then they'd either buy ETH themselves or just sell/lease that magic crystall ball they've got to some stockbrokers and get filthy rich.

#2776
Good luck. Everyone has been waiting for the GPU market to settle down for over a year and instead it just got worse.

If you're getting enough fps and just want them to be more consistent a 1080 might be a bit overkill.

Mostly you'll need a better CPU for streaming if you're not getting enough fps right now. Cheapest option would be a used i7-4790K. I really don't think this is the best time for almost a full build.
New AMD CPUs coming soon-ish (APUs february, CPUs in April), new Intel CPUs later this year, possibly with 8 cores.
RAM is still way too expensive.
GPUs are ridiculously expensive.

Setsul, would this ram work instead? https://pcpartpicker.com/product/kXbkcf/gskill-memory-f43200c16d32gvk
Do ram brands matter at all, or are they all the same in reliability/performance? I would prefer the minimalistic black of the gskill ram over the team tforce one.

Which parts? Because you mentioned CPU, RAM, GPU, storage, cooler, PSU.
What I'm trying to tell is if you want a build for the next 5-7 years then buying RAM and GPU right now while the prices for both are at an all time high due to shortages is really stupid.

#2779
Yes.
No, if you want you can check who actually made the RAM (Samsung, SK Hynix or Micron) then you can do that. Mostly matters for really high frequencies and if you want to overclock the RAM even further.

I already have a CPU cooler, storage, and PSU; all I really need to buy is a new case, CPU, RAM, and GPU. Would it be stupid to buy all of them except for the GPU right now because I dont really need a new graphics card yet for what I'm doing. Do you think RAM will go down in price any time soon like month or so? and again my budget would be around $1,200 for those parts, probably like $500ish on the GPU and $700 for the rest.

Yes. Like I said, new CPUs are coming and DRAM should become cheaper again. So if you plan on keeping the CPU for 7 years then you should wait a few months. Dates for the next wave of Coffee Lake aren't quite confirmed, could be April right around Ryzen, could be later.
No, not within a month. Samsung got a new fab going online in Q1 (and then production still needs to ramp up + 1 month for actually shipping the RAM) and another in Q3 and apparently SK Hynix will also finish building a new fab sometime this year that will double their production. So within a year, but not within a month.

Maybe get a better mobo if you want to get a good overclock on the 8700K. What cooler do you have anyway?

#2782
I mean it's probably the only 1070 you can find at that price, so yes. It's not bad either.

The Maker 92 is a pure marketing gimmick especially considering the price. The 212 Evo is budget cooler and that's how it performs.

https://tpucdn.com/reviews/CoolerMaster/Masterliquid_Maker_92/images/temp_oc_aida64_fpu.png

Marginally better mobo.
Actual midrange would be something like an Asus Strix-G or MSI SLI Plus or Pro Carbon.
If you're looking at >60$ coolers then you want to go a bit above that so something like an Asus Z370-A, MSI Gaming M5, Gigabyte Gaming 5 or ASRock Extreme 4.

Why would a modular PSU with more cables than a non-modular PSU have too few cables?
Why would a non-modular PSU with fixed cable lengths be more likely to have the correct length than a modular PSU with multiple different lengths? Apart from standard like the ATX 24 pin which is in the exact same position on every mobo and therefore requires the same length on every build.

I mean with the Seasonic Focus Plus Gold you get cables for
1 CPU
1 GPU (2x8pin)
6x SATA
3x IDE
You can buy more if you want more GPUs, HDDs, whatever.
Or get the 650W with cables for 2 GPUs (4x8pin) and 8x SATA.
Or the 750W with cables for 2 GPU, 2 CPUs (because why not?) and the same 8x SATA.
And so on.

It's 150W per 8 pin + 75W from the PCIe slot so if you're trying to run 2 GPUs that need more than a single 8 pin then those GPUs are legally allowed to draw >450W. Maybe Seasonic not including the cables to do that on a 550W PSU is their way of telling everyone that it shouldn't be done.

Okay. Thank you.

To be clear the 650 you're talking about is https://pcpartpicker.com/product/WrNypg/seasonic-focus-plus-gold-650w-80-gold-certified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-ssr-650fx right?

Would the PSU listed on my build list work as well? It's slightly cheaper.

He said something along the lines of "why not just get a non-modular so it's more direct. Sometimes the cables aren't long enough on a modular and you have to attach them to other cables to extend them and those attachments can loosen over time"

Yes.
Yes.
Wtf is that cooler though. Seriously, full ATX case, full ATX mobo but a small form factor cooler?

EDIT:
Extension cables on a PSU are actually retarded. Especially if it's modular so you can just BUY LONGER CABLES.
You know, unlike non-modular PSUs where if the magic he thinks that protects them from having too short cables fails you have to use extension cables. Which is retarded and unsafe.
Are you sure the problem isn't just him not having any modular PSUs in stock and trying to sell you a non-modular one?
