This movie was fantastic.
Spoilers from here on out, do yourself a favor and go watch it before reading:

Show Content
This movie surpassed my expectations by far. Rather than copy the story of Empire strikes back like TFA did with A New Hope it paid homage to certain scenes but had much original content too.

There were many stunning visuals and great scene composition, Luke's final fight and Snoke's throne room come to mind. I absolutely loved the X-wing fights as well. All the fights had great choreography.

In my opinion the detour to casino planet was questionable and could have been left out as was Leia's certain death and survival through her force capabilities, though i was glad it wasn't a huge part of the movie. Certain scenes, characters and animals were clearly meant to appeal to younger audiences and sell toys but i wasn't bothered much as it was nowhere near as stupid as the prequels.

Snoke surprised me by being outsmarted and dying like a bitch, really thought he was gonna stay the big bad guy and seem unbeatable till episode 9. Also surprised Rey's bloodline isn't special considering her power and natural talent though Kylo may have lied to her. The love story between Rose and Finn seemed unnecessary but maybe it's just me not liking her character.

I was amazed when they brought back Leia's hologram message as well as Yoda's force ghost proving they also wanted to appeal to older fans of the franchise. The nerd in me was happy. Luke first showing off his huge power and then going the path of Obi-Wan, facing his physically superior fallen student to buy time for the new hero carrying hope was excellent and him becoming one with the force as he was looking at the two suns as the binary sunset theme plays was a great way to end his arc. Another big plus was Luke explaining the force similar to Obi-Wan in the original trilogy rather than some midichlorian bullshit.

I wonder if Luke is gonna continue to guide Rey as a force ghost and if other force ghosts will make an appearence again (maybe redeemed Anakin to Kylo?). Also I'm curious what they will do with Leia in 9.

For me this movie ranks top 3 in the franchise, right after V and IV. Looking forward to 9 now!

Watched it on the 13th, I'm not a huge star wars fan but I gotta say some scenes were breathtaking

Show Content
like the one where the admiral lady slams her ship into snoke's flagship
Show Content
I also thought they were gonna pull an episode 5 and end it on a low note when snoke got Luke's location and the escape pods were being shot down. I kept expecting the movie to end after that happened.

I also agree that the casino planet was unnecessary because the movie was already quite long and quite slow at times, it legitimately felt like a 3.5 hour movie. I also disliked the whole highly improbable chain of events where the admiral lady, for no good reason, hides her plan from everyone else which leads to Finn and the mechanic girl (I suck at remembering names) having to go to the casino planet where they fail but they randomly find another ex machina master hacker that can break out of jail at any time but randomly doesn't until they're there with him and then he randomly overhears the conversation about the escape pods and then tells the first order. All this because the admiral wouldn't tell anyone about her plan. Then again, it's a movie about space wizards so I probably shouldn't complain about realism

About Rey's power, snoke explained that as kylo got more proficient in the dark side, someone else needed to get more proficient in the light side to balance things, which I guess is as much of an explanation as we'll ever get about Rey being a mary sue

Overall I'd give it a solid 8/10

a few moments that didn't really have me convinced, but there are some amazing scenes that made me forget about them.

Show Content
My highlights:

Dreadnought opening
ROTJ-style Yoda
Disney gives zero shits about snoke
Rey/Kylo vs snoke's guards (were they the Knights of Ren?)
Kylo vs Luke
BB-8 vs prison guards
"Do you think you got him?"

i assumed they were the imperial guard or some sort of remnant of them from the original trilogy based on their dress/only appearing in scenes with snoke aka "the emperor"

I'll be honest, I was a bit disappointed.

The Good

Show Content
Some of those visuals, the throne room scene looked spectacular, as was the framing of luke explaining the force to rey as she felt it with visual cuts.

Adam Driver as Kylo Ren. I was not happy with his performance in the force awakens, but dear lord did he bring it here.

Mark Hamill as Luke. They did a good job with his arc as a broken/defeated man who couldn't live up to his legend reputation.

The scene where Rey/Kylo fight together was well done. I liked how she tossed the saber to kylo who lit it into the guys face.

Rey being a nobody. Nice touch to have her not be a known quantity. Shows how anybody can really be force powerful (Thank god for no midichlorians.)

The Yoda appearance. It flowed well, didn't feel like fan service, and played a key role.

The Mediocre

Show Content
battering ram cannon???

Both space parts. The super slow moving bombers, the stupidly oversized capital ships. It just felt like a step back from the first 8(christ) movies.

Fins only real use being that he knows the ins and outs of everything imperial. I feel like he would have cleaned starkiller or snokes ship not both but idk. Thats kinda nitpicking.

The Bad

Show Content
Superman Leia.... Need i say more?

It really bothers me that in this movie, a ship jumping through light space split apart another ship, but in Rogue one,
Darth Vader's stationary star destroyer decimates a pile of rebel ships that try to jump through it.

That whole casino planet. Felt forced.

Rose. Felt more forced. She just didnt mesh. It annoyed me how she denied Fin a hero's death.

Speaking of which, how did she even catch up to him? He's gunning it in a straight line, she had retreated at one point, yet somehow gets in line to TBone him? Was her ship faster?

I also dont like how the first half of the movie Fin is all "I CANT WAIT FOR REY WHERE IS SHE I LOVE HER" and then shifts to I love this new girl. It felt too forced again. Although it does potentially leave a Poe/Rey duo which I could get behind.

Did we really need to see Luke milk a space cow and then drink it.

Second straight movie with a useless Phasma.

Also Hux felt like a bitch and not like the solid leader he seemed like in the force awakens.

I may think of more, but overall Id give it like a 6/10. Worse than the OT/Rogue one, better than episodes 1/2. Id put it on par with 3/7

It was definitely good and ridiculously fun to watch in the cinema, but lots of things left me with very torn opinions

Show Content
There's too much to name really. The main things I suppose are as follows, I'll probably miss a few
  • Snoke already being dead (unless they somehow bring him back but that would be even worse). Like how are they gonna build up this character so much and then immediately kill him without seemingly any effort. He literally died to the guy put across as one of the most if not the most weak-minded character. This may make more sense in the next movie but at present it just seems to be an odd plot twist
  • Luke death from tiredness, I guess the projection thing he did took some crazy amounts of energy since nobody has really ever been seen to do that, and fair enough the scene was quite nice, but it was kinda just like oh
  • Leia being force powerful makes sense because there have been hints at it as well as more solid references outside of the films, so her saving herself I didn't see as too stupid. But the thing that REALLY REALLY ruined was the moment where Kylo Ren couldn't bring it on himself to fire at the deck, only moments later to see two tie fighters seemingly kill his mother. I thought that scene was fantastic and the fact that Leia could just save herself sort of undermined it.
  • Aside from the almost comical death of snoke I thought the scene of Kylo choosing Rey over Snoke was amazing, I just remember feeling so hyped as it was happening. Like him almost finally transitioning back to the light was a great moment, so it's almost a shame that the events afterwards happened like they did. But that brings another question, who is the main enemy actually going to be? Is it still Kylo Ren, or will he continue this sort of on the wire thing and finally turn back to Jedi
  • Too many weird ex machinas as explained
  • I can't really think of many other major things for now, but I read a really interesting post on reddit. The guy made the point that technically it was almost 100% Fin and Rose's fault that nearly all of the resistance was wiped out. If the original plan of the small ships escaping to the planet had gone through, there would have been very little casualties from that point onwards. The entire reason the plan didn't work was because the fake codemaster dude told their plan to the first order. If Fin and Rose just didn't do anything then everyone would have been fine. It's kind of funny in a sad way actually.

Overall I thought the film was the most enjoyable to watch to date, perhaps aside from the end of Rogue One because damn that shit was amazing
I rate highly but there were so many controversial moments.

I actually talked about this exactly with my friend i was watching the movie with. Funny that there's a reddit post about this. It's like hey we got this Commander (who's also famous if I'm not mistaken right now?), let's better not trust in her and do our own stuff.

Really didn't like it. The Leia scene was just ridiculous and Snoke's - a seemingly incredibly powerful sith lord, dies to a cheap trick and we don't get to hear his backstory, like where he was for the past 50 years.

Thinks I loved:

Show Content
  • Binary Sunset bookending Luke
  • The lightspeed collision scene
  • Rey and Kylo fighting in the Throne Room, the lightsaber-ignition-in-face got an "ooooooooh" from the theatre
  • The visuals in general
  • "Do you have something you could put on?" and their force-bond scenes in general
  • Hux being turned into a running gag
  • Luke drinking weird milk
  • Luke channelling Han and trolling Kylo at the end
  • Yoda being a sassy little fucker and cackling after he zapped the tree.
  • "There is nothing in that tree Rey does not already have" - then you see the books in the Falcon at the end
  • The film generally not being afraid to do different stuff

Things I did not love:

Show Content
  • Casino planet / that subplot in general
  • Captain Phasma's criminal underuse
  • SuperLeia - I like her having force powers, but this looked terrible, and I thought it would have been a good way for her to die. I also saw some good suggestions on Reddit like having her push Ackbar back into the ship or not showing powers there and instead using them to inspire allies from across the galaxy to help at the end.
  • The fact that the last half-hour of the movie wasn't a Finn/Poe romcom.

Saw it this morning, I honestly didn't really like a lot of it either.

Show Content
My main gripes were with the shitty and really forced "humourous" lines that they kept forcing in, the sort of romance with Finn and Rose, the casino planet arc, SUPER LEIA and how quickly they've just killed off Snoke.

They did some cool shit with Snoke, his chamber looked amazing for one. The floor sort of looking like water was such a good touch, but the fact that all he did was use the force a bit and some force lightning didn't make up for him being killed off so quickly with no grand fight or anything.

Everything with Finn and Rose just seemed super forced, then when they're on the planet at the end, Poe somehow knows her and is asking her, a nobody, for a sitrep, it made 0 sense. I liked that it was Rose's sister that you saw being the hero on the bomber earlier in the film though, that was nice.

Am I right in saying though that the little kid at the end used the force to get the brush he had from leaning on the wall? I'm so sure that he did.

How could they underuse the most universally loved character this much

Snoke was always a weird character for me and I'm kinda glad they killed him off.
When he was introduced in The Force Awakens I was kinda meh because he just seemed like an emperor wannabe (which I guess is fitting considering Kylo is a Darth Vader wannabe).
Also lets not forget the fact that he can somehow probe into both Rey's and Kylo's minds and change what they saw with little effort but couldn't tell that Kylo WAS TURNING A LIGHTSABER RIGHT NEXT TO HIM YOU BLIND CUNT.
He should've died but it should've been in a more grand way than just "lol owned noob u misread my mind"

First of all, I have never liked Carrie Fisher's acting. She always feels dead behind the eyes ( no pun intended ) and this was no different. I feel like the should have killed Leia off when the blast hit the ship. (Also why did Laura Dern wait for like ten escapes ships to blow up until she started to aim her thing at Snoke's Ship. Also, why did she need to stay and pilot the ship? Do they not have auto-pilot?) Instead, they have painted themselves into a hole where CGI Leia has to make an appearance in the next film.

Most of the comedy for me felt forced and flat. The only funny line I can remember is with Hutch, Ren and the random tech guy when they are attacking the rebel's base. Problem is they don't have any charismatic characters carrying this. Boyega is trying but most of his stuff does not connect for me, Fisher has no charisma, neither does Hamill nor Marie Tran. Rey has some but not enough, same with Isaac.

I enjoyed the tension between Driver, Riddley, and Hamill however. I feel it would have been more interesting if Rey did accept/join Ren, and become a grey force to bring balance to the force.

Snoke was a joke imo and down with the porgs.

Beautiful movie that had a bit too many things going on and felt too much like a Marvel/Disney flick than a Star Wars movie here and there.

Leia needed to die

Rey should have taken Kylo's offer.

Scruff_Really didn't like it. The Leia scene was just ridiculous and Snoke's - a seemingly incredibly powerful sith lord, dies to a cheap trick and we don't get to hear his backstory, like where he was for the past 50 years.

imo there are always going to be plot holes and questionable bits in these types of films- it's in their nature.

But I don't think these issues necessarily detract from the main entertainment value of the film, the excellent action scenes and cinematography, and characters we come to like doing awesome and dangerous things. When I watched it yesterday I was enjoying it so much that I was happy to ignore the stupid/unexplained stuff because the amount of cool shit going on constantly meant I didn't mind in the slightest. Rather than looking at the few things that were bad to make up your mind why not look at the tonne of shit that was mega fucking cool: the first battle scene, everything Luke did, the complicated relationship of Rey and Kylo Ren culminating in a sick fight, the lightspeed suicide mission, even the somewhat incongruous sideplot of Finn and Rose escaping and rampaging through space-Vegas on giant space-horses etc., not to mention the amount of shots that just looked visually stunning.

I thought the hackerman should of never been in the film, what a useless character.

But I did love the movie 9/10.

i dont understand why luke dissapeared. did he just exhaust himself that much that he died?
there were some annoying kids next to me so i didnt really got that part. i just saw some kind of spaceship in that sun and then he dissapeared.
not really that star wars crack

as much as i want to like it i cant get over so many flaws that i just want to straight up call fundamental, in short i believe this SW deconstruction and expectation subversion is all part of the director's plan and i appreciate him for doing it and attempting to shake up this universe (although SW for me was the last place untouched by postfuckingmodernism and that thing is now ruined too) but his alternatives just seem so uninteresting and out of place it is extremely hard for me to say i enjoyed it

also this movie is exhaustively long and i had a horrible headache by the time it ended, partly due to the fact there was no air conditioning in the cinema i went to but yeah, in that regard it was not a pleasant experience in the slightest

also way for the director to kill all the fucking secondary characters that jj abrams established and which couldve been great given decent development, is he having a grudge against him or something? i swear he just made ep9 so SO easy to fail and he doesnt even direct the next fucking movie way to go with your idiotic ideas that can easily ruin this whole trilogy
