When is he going to build?
Overclocking yes/no?
MSI - X370 is not a mobo. That's a manufacturer and a chipset. Also why would you order from newegg with a budget in €?
Don't need a 600W PSU, just a good PSU.
There's not much point in 8 cores / 16 threads for gaming. New 4c/4t i3s should be much cheaper and faster, 6c/6t i5 at most.
XFire/SLI used to be ok-ish and will never be good again. SFR is way too much work, AFR is basically a gimmick but still wasted effort because why even bother when you can force your customers to buy a new faster GPU? Old used GPUs being added later doesn't make them any money and people buying two GPUs instead of one that's more than twice as expensive isn't good for them either. For those that would've bought 4 600$ GPUs for 4-way SLI you just support 2-way SLI on the high end GPUs and disable it for all others and make the fastest GPU a 1200$ Titan. More profit, less effort.

Looking to build ASAP, unless something is about to come out that would make a big difference. OCing yeah I guess he wouldn't mind if necessary for some games.

I meant any one of the MSI - X370s because I remember that they make good mobos. I don't know which model would be best, but I was looking at the various reduced offers around 100-120€ on newegg. I figured if they have a lot of stuff reduced, it's probably worth 20€ shipping, will check Amazon and Geizkragen as well to get the best deal of cours (do you recommend any different site?) Anyway, I was considering a bigger mobo for potential SLI needs, but if it's shit anyway I guess it would be a waste. Mobo recommendations?

So, would you recommend the new i3 or i5 instead? If the i5 offers noticeably improved browsing/mass pdf opening/whatever else one might be doing performance, I think that would be preferable. K line or not? Does overclocking the cpu even make any sense at all nowadays (he doesn't play tf2)?

It's not like it wouldn't run without overclocking, just about performance. In most games it probably won't make difference, you're more likely to be limited by the GPU.

You should select a mobo based on the features you want/need, not just which brand you remember.
Newegg is shipping from the US, so add 19% tax and x% customs. It will neither be cheaper nor faster than ordering from German shops. Do you mean geizhals?

Wouldn't make a difference for browsing. Generally K = overclocking, although the stock clockrates are higher I don't think it's enough to justify the >50€ difference + price for a cooler you'd have to pay if you don't overclock.
I'll have to see how the budget works out.

Any specific games?

Yeah, Geizhals, my bad. He mostly plays CS competitively, but that's mostly because he's on a laptop and cannot run any new games. I think he likes to try out most new games, would probably be playing PUBG, Dishonored 2 and Ark out of the current games. I assume that if he does get a 1440 or even 4k monitor, he won't be CPU bottlenecked on any of these games even with an nvidia 1080, so I can't think of a reason why he'd want to overclock. Probably pointless unless you know a case where it would be really beneficial.

Resolution/size/features for the monitor?
ARK/Dota would be GPU limited and PUBG doesn't runs like shit anyway so he could away with an i3, now that they got 4 cores. i7 would definitely overkill, I'd just wait and see how it works out with the budget, but probably an i5.
Overclocking yes/no?

Definitely a gaming monitor - 144hz and 1ms response and 27"+
1920 x 1080 at a minimum.
Rgr on the i5, and no OC.

Appreciated Setsul!

Would obviously have to push it below 1500€, but that's doable.

There's quite a few options for the CPU though.
Only Z370 (same as Z270) has been released and only 300 series chipsets support Coffee Lake, because Intel wants your money. Since for CFL you have to buy a Z chipset anyway the only added cost for overclocking would be a cooler and a K CPU. However the non-K were handicapped a bit as well, 300-400 MHz slower.

Anyway because CFL CPUs aren't at MSRP yet and it will still take a while until they're in stock everywhere if he doesn't want to wait and doesn't want to overclock Kaby Lake can still make sense. E.g. i3-8350K and i5-7600 are basically the same speed and the 7600 is a bit more expensive and locked, but since he doesn't care about that and would be forced to buy a more expensive Z370 mobo (only option for CFL) and a cooler it ends up being cheaper. Same with the i3-8100 and i5-7500/7400.

Now if he does want 6 cores then CFL is basically the only option. He'd have to wait a bit though. If he doesn't want to overclock then the 8600K would be a bit of a waste, sure 0.3 GHz higher boost clocks, but even if he had to get a cooler anyway to ensure the 8400 always gets the full boost it's still a 80€ difference.

So basically 4 cores or 6 cores?
Right now or is later this month still soon enough?

Any other features for the monitor? 1 ms response time is a lie btw, ignore what it says on the box, only trust reviews.
Other than that just post again in the week he'll build it so I can make an up to date partlist.

First of all, thanks for the time!
Later this month should be no problem. If CFL only supports 300 chipsets, I don't think it would make much sense to go with a 7600 and cheaper mobo, since he'd have to replace the mobo next upgrade anyway. He might do some foto and video editing here and there, so I don't think the 6 cores would be completely wasted.

Build looks good. It says that MSRP for the 8600k is 220€, you think it will get there within the next few weeks?
If it goes that low, I believe he'd want to go with the K to be able to OC it at some point. I guess if we need to shave a couple euros, 3TB HDD should also be fine. If it ends up somewhere around or below 1500, it should be all good!

Well rumour has it that next year there will be 8 cores and Z390, Intel might screw everyone looking to upgrade over again.
After that comes Ice Lake, which is a new architecture which traditionally means a new socket in Intel's case.

MSRP is 257$. Exchange rates aren't that favourable and then there's still tax on top of it so I don't think 220€ is going to happen. It should get a little bit cheaper though once it's in stock.
Like I said it should be doable within 1500€ and there's nothing but Z370 anyway.

Just post again if I forget to check when it's in stock.

Hi, I'm a first time PC builder looking for advice. I don't know much (read: anything) about building computers so this is the list I came up with after a few days of googling. I'd mainly be using it for TF2, PUBG, and Hearthstone. I'd also like it to be capable of streaming and photoshop and video recording/editing for school. I want to try to keep it around $1500 including the peripherals. If there are any glaring issues please let me know. Thanks!

Not a fan of the 212 Evo but I'm too lazy to copy pase the reasons. Surely you can afford a better cooler though?
Mobo is a bit overkill, check which features you actually need.
Seagate Barracuda or Toshiba P300 are faster and usually cheaper than a WD Blue.
No SSD?
Not a fan of the 200R, like I said before it's basically a 40$ case but Corsair expects you to pay 80$ for it.
<350W build. 650W PSU. That's a bit overkill, there's no way you're going to need that much even with overclocking.

Rest looks fine.

Hey Setsul, about the CPU: The price on ARLT has risen from 300 to 320 and it seems to be the only vendor that even promises to have these in store by the end of the month. I've read reports about the supply choking in europe until 2018. Should I maybe swoop in for the 320 before it gets even more expensive if I don't want to risk having to wait several months? We'd like to build the PC this month or early next month, so if this is the only batch coming to german in the near future, my friend would go for the 320. Do you think this is the case?

That promise is rather irrelevant. Other shops have already sent out a couple CPUs, there's just not that many. Can't say it'll be "in stock in x days" when the next two batches they'll get will all go towards fulfilling existing orders.

Wouldn't just pick whichever store promises the earliest delivery date, regardless of price, but yes you'll probably have to order at some point without it being in stock (at best with an estimated delivery date). So one of the shops where it's "only" 280-290 should be fine.
Keep in mind that no one really knows how it'll all work out because some people have preordered one at all shops to get a CPU asap.

Wouldn't just pick whichever store promises the earliest delivery date, regardless of price, but yes you'll probably have to order at some point without it being in stock (at best with an estimated delivery date). So one of the shops where it's "only" 280-290 should be fine.

SetsulOk, I'll see what I can do tomorrow. Just a rough draft, final partlist in the week that you actually buy everything.

Exactly, for rendering more cores are better, so if the budget allows it then Threadripper, otherwise a RyZen 8 core because it's cheaper than a Kaby Lake 4 core or Coffee Lake 6 core.

1700 + cooler for overclocking, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, 4TB HDD, RX 580 or somethng like that, FreeSync monitor and even a nice IPS monitor (e.g. Dell U2415) look doable though.

Hey Setsul, building it this weekend :)

Hey guys. If I were to upgrade my rig completely and got a new SSD/HDD with a new OS, what would be the best route to back up my files on the drive with the old OS so I can use them? Is it just plug-and-use or should I backup my drives to a cloud service like BackBlaze/backup my files locally on a large hard drive?

I didn't check every monitor but I don't think they have any FreeSync monitors, any other shop you could use to get the monitors? There's also no price for the Dell IPS monitors.

Threadripper is still too expensive and so is Skylake-X so I think a 1700 (or 1700X for the higher base clock just to be sure) + overclocking would be the best option.

Any preferences for the case?

#2595
You should always have backups anyway?
Online/cloud services are good for incremental backups, but making and restoring a full backup will take quite a long time.
You can plug in the old drive (while the pc is turned off) after you've installed the OS on the new one, then just copy the files and use the old HDD for backups.

Yeap there’s a few, that’s cause the prices for the parts on OFFER have to be discussed in person, maybe you could use http://www.mynextcomonline.com or https://www.lazada.sg as a rough estimation, sorry!

Alright 1700/X sounds good :)

I was really into tempered glass cases (kinda what got me into wanting to build a PC) but I’ll go with any mid tower with good airflow you’d recommend.

Small update, went down to pick up a monitor arm today and the U2415 @cybermind is $389

Then I went down to the Dell shop and was told that the U2415 is obsolete lol, their suggestion was the U2417h, $379

If the U2417H is cheaper then sure, go for it.

Pros for each:
U2415:
5 instead of 4 USB ports.
2 instead of 1 USB port.
300 instead of 250 cd/m² (realistically though you'd usually use 120 for colour dependant work anyway)
So nothing that really matters.

U2417H:
Slightly better colours (although without calibration there's some variation and they're very close so the best 10% of U2415 are definitely better than the worst 10% of U2417H. After calibrating it would definitely be better, but not by much).
More energy efficient.
Lighter.
Again, none of this really matters.

Since the U2417H is cheaper and newer I'd get that one.

Now I just have to find a FreeSync monitor and then I can make the final part list.

I can't find any 144 Hz FreeSync monitor, could you help me?
Otherwise we'll just have to go with G-Sync and that obviously requires a different GPU.

Hmm I don’t mind G-Sync monitors (would actually prefer them) but I thought 3.5k-ish might be too little budget-wise, maybe we can compromise on stuff like storage if the budget is too tight :)

Ok, that's the alternative I already considered. Could go for a GTX 1070 instead of the 1060 (~580 equivalent) in that case.

https://www.lazada.sg/acer-predator-xb241h-24-fhd-g-sync-gaming-monitor-10848929.html
This was the cheapest I could find so far, so that's what I'm using for the budget calculations.

16GB instead of 32GB RAM because it's the easiest to upgrade later?

About the case, I'm guessing the P400S is the version without the window or it would say so, that means the question is do you need a CD/DVD/blu-ray drive? If yes I'd say Enthoo Pro M, if no P400 or P300 (basically the same as the P400, just cheaper and smaller). Would those be ok / which one do you prefer?

There's no 4TB Seagate Barracuda so the options are:
3TB Toshiba, most likely P300/DT01ACA, same speed and cheaper than the 3TB Barracuda
4TB Seagate IronWolf NAS, more expensive and actually slightly slower (lower power consumption for NAS and so on).
4TB Toshiba, most likely P300/MD04ACA, which does produce interesting noise (think 90s HDD) when doing random reads/writes. Cheaper and faster than the IronWolf NAS though. If you're fine with the noise there are also 5 and 6TB versions. At 6TB there's also the HGST Deskstar NAS, slightly more expensive and slower than the Toshiba, but quiet.

Rest of the list is basically done, just need to choose the options now.
1700/1700X, cooler depending on case/budget left, RAM 16/32GB, SSD 500/1000GB, HDD obviously and GPU 1060/1070.

Ok, here we go:

CPU+Mobo: 1700X + Asus Prime B350-Plus - 723$
Cooler: Cryorig H7 - 65$
Should be good enough, I mean you're not trying to do anything crazy. Also fairly low height which is nice for compatibility with cases. There's an RGB LED version for 34$ (?!?) more, if you're into that sort of thing.
RAM: 2x8GB CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 3200 C16 - 279$
There's a 3000 C15 kit (so same latency, only slightly lower frequency), which is 14$ cheaper, but I'd stick with 266.67 MHz dividers (2667, 2933, 3200 Mhz and so on), 133.33 (2800, 3066 etc) can work depending on the board but 66.67, which includes 3000 MHz rarely works without a lot of fiddling. Worst case because 3000 is so close to 2933 there is no 2933 profile and you'd have to run it at 2667 or 2800.
LED version for 10$ more.

SSD: Samsung 850 Evo 1TB - 469$
HDD: Toshiba 3TB - 136$
Went with the cash price because I don't want to see 0.5$ in my calculations. 3.5$ shouldn't make a difference anyway.

With 379$ for the U2417H and 549$ for the XB241H we're at exactly 2600$.

Case: P400 would be 139$, P400S if it's the windowed version would be 109$, worst case if you want to plan with 109$ there's the P300 which is like I said almost the same, just smaller and only 99$.

So 761-801$ left.

The cheapest 1070 costs 619$ usually I don't like going for those because most of the time some corners have been cut to lower the price, but the GALAX EXOC Sniper should actually be decent. I don't know if it will be in stock though (mining still going on), so I'll give you other options.

I'm going to list a few options for the PSUs so you've got some wiggle room.
All 3 are Seasonic because even though there's alternatives they're all either slightly more expensive (~10$) for the same performance/features or slightly worse at the exact same price.
S12-II 520W - 89$
Sadly there is no lower wattage version available since the build won't need that much and it would be cheaper. Baseline PSU.
M12-II 520W - 99/105$
Not sure why the price says 99/105. Same PSUs basically, but semi-modular.
G-550 (550W obviously) - 139$
Fully modular, 80+ Gold instead of Bronze and generally better performance.

That rules out any GPU >712$.
ITX and other versions with only one fan are also pointless.
That leaves us with the following in order of price
GALAX EXOC Sniper - 619$
>622$ -> P400 + G-550 no longer possible
Zotac Mini - 629$ (slower than the GALAX)
MSI ARMOR - 689$ (assuming it's the non-OC version ~Zotac Mini, otherwise in the middle between Zotac Mini and GALAX)
>692$ -> only P400S + S12-II or P300 + M12-II possible
ZOTAC AMP! Core - 709$ (~GALAX)
>702$ -> only P300 + S12-II possible
ASUS DUAL - 709$ (non-OC version ~MSI Armor/Zotac Mini, OC version ~GALAX)
Gigabyte Windforce OC - 709$ (~GALAX/Asus Dual OC)

I know the budget probably isn't that hard capped at exactly 3500, but you were willing to put some effort into this (unlike some others I've seen) so I'll do the same.

#2605

So I need to build a new PC to replace the nearly 5 year old one I'm currently using. My budget is around $1100, but some components here are a good deal more expensive than they are in Europe or NA.

I'd like to be able to comfortably edit/render 4K video and 3D scenes on this build, in addition to being able to play games(mostly TF2, Quake Champions) at good framerates. I also want to be able to go Hackintosh dual boot with minimal fuss, but that's a secondary consideration. I feel like I won't need to/don't want to overclock even 2-3 years down the line, plus I imagine that will reduce my build cost by a decent amount.

As for components from my old build, I have two 120GB SSDs(Samsung 850 and an Intel 330) and a 2TB WD storage drive. While I don't really want to buy a new SSD, if working on my video clips off the disk drive may be a bottleneck while editing I would consider purchasing a new SSD maybe to work on active projects.

EDIT: I was looking at something like a coffee lake i7, Z370 Gigabyte board, 16GB of Gskill RAM, GTX 1060 and a Seasonic PSU.

Any other features for the monitor? 1 ms response time is a lie btw, ignore what it says on the box, only trust reviews.
Other than that just post again in the week he'll build it so I can make an up to date partlist.

Hey Setsul, he's coming back in a couple days - would you mind doing the up to date partlist when you've got some time?
Thanks

I'm looking to upgrade/replace my 5 year old build. Hoping to spend <$1100 CDN, but I can go over that if needed. I exclusively use linux, so I'm looking for hardware with good support. I currently have

  • AMD FX8350 (+Antec Khuler 620)
  • ASUS GTX 570
  • 2x4GB RAM
  • Antec 550W PSU (I think? Can't see the label without taking it out)
  • Coolermaster HAF 922

I'm looking to upgrade the CPU/Motherboard, GPU, RAM, PSU if needed, and case.

I'd like 120+ FPS in csgo for at least a few years. I would also like at least 16GB RAM. I also enjoy how quiet the Khuler is, so if there is a quiet cooling system it would be prefered.

I have 5 internal SATA drives, so 6+ ports on the motherboard and a case with enough slots would be needed (3 HDD, 1 SSD, 1 Bluray.

If there is room in the budget I also want to upgrade my 64GB SSD to 250GB, but I can do that later if needed.

Any advice would be appreciated.

alright, will have 1100€ by the beginning of december, looking to get a brand new build, meaning all new parts without scavanging parts out of my old pc. priority is being able to run tf2 as good as possible. I'd also love to run overwatch above 144 frames at native res (1920 x 1080) and play more recently released games at a stable framerate. willing to go all out with the 1100. got all the peripherals i need. a little side wish id have would be silent cooling or an ssd, but it defenetly isnt necessary to be part of the build. on a side note, id have to buy a windows license or pirate it, yes?

setsul please help ^_^
