PC Won't Turn On

Alright chaps,

So today. my pc just won't turn on.

Haven't installed anything new.
Did the test on my PSU where you put a paperclip in the 24 pin that connects to the motherboard and turn on power, and I could hear the fans and my cd drive whirred too.

However, when I plug in the 24 pin to the motherboard, nothing will happen. There's no light on my motherboard either.
How can I test this further to see why it's not working?

Having taken a lot of connections out, i'm not even sure they're back in the right slots now on the motherboard, as I was trying to see if the power button was broken or some shit.

Would appreciate any help.

Cheers

Take the motherboard out of the case and take out everything except CPU and RAM. Reseat the RAM and CPU. Check the motherboard for things that might cause a short.

Try turning on the PC in this minimal state outside of the case.

Thanks for the response.

WHat kind of things might cause a short?

Okay so I tried it out of the case with just my motherboard connected to the power, and my cpu and ram in (and cpu connected to power) and nothing.

I assume my case power button is fine and connected ok. But even if not, I can't hear any psu fan noise.

When I first built my tower and fucked up on setting up my gpu, I had the same thing happen. Turns out one of my Molex cables between power supply and gpu was busted. Very rare and tedious thing to check, but there's still a chance that could be your problem.

Being as you got power out of the PSU - but not power into the motherboard, my assumptions would be:

The cable between PSU and MOBO is defective.
The connector itself between the MOBO and PSU is bad (that's worse unless you want to solder in a new one).

Your power button from the case has become disconnected from the MOBO
The cable or connector between case and MOBO is bad

I would wager since you cant get any signs of life (hopefully you've got some lights or something on your MOBO or the MOBO speaker plugged in) that it's the cable itself or the connector.

If you have a spare PSU laying around I'd try plugging it in (it's always good to save odds and ends like that) if you know anybody that's into computer stuff too they may also have a spare laying around to see if it's just the cable.

If you can get two PSUs to fail to feed power to the board then there's something wrong with the MOBO's connector I'd assume.

An alternative would be to find a very shitty computer (something nobody cares about - again odds and ends) and try to plug your current PSU into it and see if it tries to come to life lol.

If you can't find a spare PSU to do the testing - you can pick "new" crappy ones up on ebay for 18$ or so - not a bad thing to have around. And if it works you've got a stop-gap until you find something you like better.

You dropped 700 on upgrades 1 day before new CPUs are released?
Like a true mong.

As I understand it they're for bollocks like 4k, 3D, VR etc, that I don't give a fuck about.

And I pretty much just play TF2 and listen to music, so...

I have no idea how a new CPU would suddenly turn your monitor into a 4K or 3D monitor or into a VR headset.
A faster CPU is faster.
TF2 loves fast CPUs.

Good for you.
I'm just saying it could be goodererer, had you waited one more day.
Or you could saved money.

you know people have like phones, right guys? it's also very possible that he's using a laptop he owns and he's talking about his main computer not turning on.
