Hey Setsul, yet another question. Looks like the Noctua fan won't be out until early/mid September, so are there any good alternatives that are actually out? i.e some of the Corsair fans or whatever is best.

Seems like it'll be in stock in Germany next week or end of August, depending on the shop, so that might be an option.
There's the Freezer 33 (not in stock at alternate.dk either) and the Hyper 212 TR (not even listed) which are both not exactly high end and seem like odd choices for a 200W CPU. They Arctic/CM probably went with those only because those sell the most and selling a <30$ cooler with minor modifications for 45$ is basically as good as it gets. At the high end they'd rather sell 150$ Aios. That's why there's no other air coolers. Why put money into making 70$ air coolers compatible with TR4 when you can just force everyone to buy >100$ water coolers? If marketing has done its job everyone who wants high performance will buy those anyway and everyone who doesn't will buy those basic 30$ coolers at a markup.

If that's the case I'll just hold on for the fan since regardless of price, I'd just be terrified of having water on top of a £1500ish CPU/mobo. It does say delivery on August on alternate.dk anyway for the Noctua. Thanks again for all the help!

Being in the market for a GPU that's a question I've been looking into - the basic answer is nobody knows, but it looks like the crypto-currency goldrush is nearing its end so maybe 5-6 months, though I am not at all familiar with the GPU production pipeline so that could be wildly inaccurate, but I assume they make a bunch in a given month particularly given the recent high demand.

Alrighty, here is the mostly finished build - https://pcpartpicker.com/list/2pWQJV

I'm fairly happy with everything as is, but I'm very open to suggestions. It's funny, when I built the PC I'm using currently HDD's were SUPER expensive because of the tsunami that hit Thailand, but now graphics cards are super inflated by cryptominers and RAM is inflated because of peoples' phones lol.

I'd be particularly interested in hearing RAM suggestions (can confirm this RAM is said to work by gigabyte) because 150$ for ram feels downright absurd any time past the 1980s and I have my doubts that ram rated that fast actually would make much of a difference in performance - but I'm hardly an expert. I'm also open to suggestions on the PSU, I feel like 650w gives me a lot of wiggle room for eventually OC'ing the processor once it may need it, and/or any other stupid thing I'd want to do or plug into it. I also live in a very rural area where power fluctuations are a fact of life, so I very much want a PSU with an extended warranty.

Once it finally comes down to it, I'll fish for better prices on particular items - just trying to see if anybody has suggestions on similarly performing items that may be a bit cheaper in the main or if I've hit some kind of land mine and am screwing myself lol.

Not really predictable.
Even assuming energy costs stays the same and hashing power / difficulty increase like they used to you'd still have to know how the price will change. No one really knows that and if they did they wouldn't tell you and instead make a few millions. If the price suddenly drops it might end rather soon, if it rises then this might take quite a while. There's also the problem that people might start looking for the next big thing and with everyone investing in the same coin, believing it to blow up soon it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

After the slump to 150$ in July we're back to 300$. I wouldn't hold my breath.

Just getting a wafer through the fab takes 3 months, then you should need to assemble the GPU and ship it (in the literal sense) so 4 months is a very optimistic estimate. Also the machines involved in semiconductor manufacturing are so expensive and maintenance intensive and the personnel can't be laid off that it costs basically the same to have a fab running at full capacity as it costs to not do manufacture anything. TSMC/GF/Samsung don't just have more capacity lying around, it's booked months or years in advance, so just giving them a call won't cut it unless you're willing to pay more than the fines they have to pay for delaying or reducing the volume delivered to other customers.

The WD Black is almost never worth it because it's really not that fast. The 1TB version especially wasn't any faster than a standard Seagate Barracuda half its price when it launched and isn't any faster now, since there hasn't been a new version since 2013.

If you're going for speed buy an SSD.

There is cheaper RAM. Zen is a bit weird and might be faster with lower clocked dual rank RAM instead of >=3000MHz single rank. Could be server optimizations first, could be by design because on servers bandwidth is more important. Read up on it if you want to go down the rabbit hole and search for dual rank RAM.

There are no reviews for the new CX series yet, but it's made by Great Wall, which makes me worry that it's another bait and switch (sell good PSU at a decent price, then switch to a much cheaper OEM once everyone knows they are good). Either way it's non-modular so the CXM series is better by default at the same price. Also there is no way you're going to get that build to 600W oc'd without anything catching fire. 450W are plenty.

As I've said before the 200R is a good 30-40$ budget case and simply not worth it for 70$. But I'm not going to stop you.

Sounds good :D The case is definitely something I'm going to look into when I go to buy this stuff during the week - it was just a decent placeholder in the 50-70$ range that I figure I'll end up in. The reason I picked the black is because I was 100% set on a blue (I've had really really good experiences with WD over the last 16 years or so, so they've earned me as a fanboi lol) but the black was only like 15$ more so I figured it couldn't hurt, but I could also just save 15$ I suppose lol.

The RAM rabbit hole is not a place I like to be because naming conventions are so wacky now it's damn hard to find RAM off of the approved list in quantities that aren't absurd lol.

Thanks for all the help!

Hi Setsul, I have a budget of £700 for a PC. I would probably only be running CSGO and TF2 on it. Can you help me with specs to build the best PC for the money I have? The help is appreciated:)

That's like saying "I'll be dying very soon (within the next couple of decades)".
I can't make a partlist without knowing the prices or even what's in stock in a couple of months, including parts that have yet to be released.
Any partlist that is the best now won't be the best in a few months either.

No offense but I'm not going to keep you in my friends list just so you can message me once within the next couple of months. I really can't afford to keep everyone who's ever added me for pc related questions, simply not enough slots, so you'd be gone with the next cleanup.

hey i have a coworker interested in building a computer for making videos for his youtube, basic gaming that his son does, and other everyday uses.

budget is $800-1000
wants two monitors, 60 hz is fine as long as its 1080p
doesnt need any other peripherals
lives in the US

if theres anything else you need me to ask him, i can but he says "hes not super picky. he just wants something that works without having to worry about it"

No overclocking I guess?
Monitor size?
Does "making videos" include rendering/editing/converting them?
Any goals in terms of settings/fps for specific games?
When do they want to build it?

Not sure why you'd go for a 2 years old CPU, which is somehow above MSRP.
No SSD.
The PSU is nothing to write home about and simply not worth that price.

I don't really see a point in upgrading anything else. Even the cheapest CPU that would be an upgrade costs 200$ and then we're talking about one from 2014. If you want a newer one you'd need a new mobo and RAM as well and you can't afford that and a decent GPU at the same time. Since your current CPU is already decent I wouldn't worry about it.

Hey, I'd like to upgrade the cpu on my current build, as well as get a new motherboard and case. No specific goal in general just want to run games better.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/76hQkT

This is what I currently have, I think all of this can be kept, but does a new motherboard mean I have to buy a new OS?

Also is it worth swapping out my hard or solid state drives I have had them for 4 years now?

My budget is $600. Thanks for the help

Running games better is a goal? I don't know which CPU would be better than your current one since you're trying to keep that a secret for some reason.

Can't keep the RAM unless you want a 4 year old CPU.

No, might have to activate windows again though.

HDDs no, SSD if it's slow, but again, your current SSD seems to be a secret.

Sorry, i guess i thought whatever i could get now would be better than what i got a while ago but it was dumb not to say

Current cpu is an i7-3770k.

https://www.amazon.com/Intel-2-5-Inch-Solid-State-Drive-Retail/dp/B004T0DNQ0

and this is the SSD

Just getting more fps I guess, gta online i get 50, i cant get 144 contstant in quake champions/ OW. My motherboard has all the ports fucked up so I want to replace that and I figured it would be dumb to get a new mobo for an old CPU

Yeah, the days where a CPU would be basically obsolete after a year are long gone.

If you haven't overclocked it already then that would be a lot cheaper than a new CPU.

The SSD is worth upgrading, could get a larger one while you're at it.
E.g. https://pcpartpicker.com/product/3kL7YJ/samsung-internal-hard-drive-mz75e250bam
or https://pcpartpicker.com/product/MZJkcf/sk-hynix-sl308-250gb-25-solid-state-drive-hfs250g32tnd-n1a2a

Yeah, that's on your GPU, not the CPU.

It's in German but just scroll down to where you can see the 970 getting 47.1 fps.
Same for OW. https://www.techspot.com/review/1180-overwatch-benchmarks/page2.html
140 fps with the 970 and an i7-6700K.
https://www.techspot.com/review/1180-overwatch-benchmarks/page5.html
A 1080 is actually hitting the CPU limit so with the 6700K they only get 239 fps even though the min fps are much higher, but either way with the 3770K at 230 fps you can see that it's clearly not the limiting factor with a 970.

What do you mean "all the ports fucked up"?

What do you mean "all the ports fucked up"?

Basically im a massive fucking idiot and I get the wires for my peripherals tangled in my chair and then move my chair and it rips them out. only like 3/8 mobo usb ports are working and none of the case ones are, plus all of the sound omes are broken.

Anyways, would the best option be to just get a mobo that supports overclocking and keep the cpu? This was a pre-built and again im an idiot so it has an unclocked cpu but a locked mobo

Only problem is I'm having trouble finding unlocked cpus for the lga1155 chipset. Any ideas one where to look?

Well replacing the case would fix the case ports at least. PCIe -> USB cards are also a thing, in case you happen to do it again.
Also a soundcard (or external DAC/amp/ADC) might be worth considering either way.

Yes, a new mobo would probably be best. Maybe a cooler too, if you're using the stock one.
They are EOL (5 years old at this point) so your best bet is trying to find a used Z75 or Z77 mobo. Wouldn't risk H77. P67 and Z68 would work, but only if the BIOS version is new enough to support the 3770K.
