They fucked up SC2, it's no suprise that they fucked this up somehow.

I feel that if they just left the OWL out of this, introduced it later down the line, the game could develop a healthy esports scene naturally.

Because they've jumped the gun and been all like "THIS WILL GIVE YOUR BRAND SO MUCH EXPOSURE, INVEST!!!" It's created this scenario where nobody can risk such a large investment on one game alone.

They could just get a dota2 team that get into a major and make bank from that instead.

it's obvious that they're not courting esports orgs anymore. they're looking to market to traditional sports owners with big money who can definitely risk a lot of money to try and make a lot more money. and it looks like they've got a least two to bite, which means there are probably more coming.

I agree that the game itself is derivative and not really that fun, but this could have a lot of negative impact on a lot of players, including our old guys.

If OWL fails, it could also possibly affect esports as a whole and how sponsors view it as well.

ShearsI'm definitely rooting for the OW scene to collapse, if only because it could potentially result in more attention and resources for TF2 if ex-players return and bring the spotlight with them.

That's a lot of ifs, though, so I'm probably just being naive.

a bunch of those people's livelihoods depend on that game so it would probably be better if that didnt happen

It doesn't matter if esports orgs pull out of OWL; traditional esports leagues like Splyce are pennies on the dollar to Blizzard. Blizzard already has the PR and money under their belt to get organisations like the New England Patriots on board with the OWL. Actual sports orgs like Miami Dolphins probably billions of dollars in reserve that they'd be willing to spend a few million for a spot in the Overwatch League, considering how much Blizzard is promising with this league. The only reason why companies are willing to invest anyways is because Blizzard has been so vague and silent on the League and their buy-in fee is so high that orgs are willing to test the waters to see if there's any actual value to OWL. And if it will, nobody knows.

But there is one thing I can guarantee; The first season will be a success. Blizzard will have several multi-million dollar organizations investing in the League and many big names and a huge amount of advertising. Viewership will probably be extremely high and I wouldn't doubt that some TV network like ESPN will purchase the boardcasting rights to OWL.

The only question is how long Blizzard can keep playing this game until said orgs lose interest or just pull out entirely.

not sure how the fuck anyone investing is expecting anything close to a good return within even 2 or 3 years, and that's especially risky with a game like overwatch which can either maybe grow or maybe continue to shrink once its novelty wears off

it would make much more sense to do this with a game that has a significantly lower chance of wearing off (eg one that already is well established and likely not going anywhere like dota as many have mentioned)

Overwatche league is coming up and teams are realizing it's not fiscally viable for them to try and get in, so they're dropping their teams
On the upside, hidan and ube are now, those are both big pogchamps

Except Fnatic, LG, and Splyce all have spots lined up for OWL. Don't know about Dignitas. Blizzard has said that the first iterations/announcements for OWL are set to start Q3 of this year.

Teams are actually being dropped the following reasons:

1. Under performing rosters with a league spot are being released in anticipation of getting new rosters/buyouts for the league. (Splyce/Fnatic)

2. Performing rosters without a guaranteed league spot are releasing to get a buyout from teams/investors that will have a league spot. (Dignitas I think)

3. Under performing rosters are being dropped after months of under performing. (Denial, LG, etc)

Also in the case of Denial the players said Denial was not treating them well and wanted to leave the org regardless of performance issues.

Anyways, since OWL is *supposedly* imminent in Q3 many of these teams are taking this opportunity to drop rosters in anticipation of picking up new ones for the league whether they be new or existing orgless teams.

also franchise spots (owl) > league spots (league). although i do admit some of these conditions blizzard has put into place are a little stupid such as no revenue share until 2021

Speaking of LG, is LG Evil going to just become just LG or will your team remain under your current name? Or is that something you guys aren't allowed to disclose?

this game doesn't even have a pug system or an open league ala esea yet, it's been a fucking year

I don't understand how they expect it to keep growing competitively let alone for 4 more years

its going to grow because blizzard is one of the biggest game devs in the world and have a basically infinite amount of money to throw at this game
also there is no shortage of smaller leagues, and overwatch has the advantage of not needing to reserve servers

tl;dr Team Liquid expected to drop OW roster (some moving to Quake, AZK moving back to CS), sell Overwatch Contendors spot, and to skip out on the Overwatch League.

funny enough NRG (who has the San Francisco OWL spot) isn't in a much better spot considering that they recently cut numlocked, leaving only harbleu, iddqd, and seamoose their coach as the only residents of their overwatch team currently, so unless they decide to pick up shadder and mesr I feel like they might just release their other 2 guys before OWL kicks off as well.

While this is rather unlikely to happen, I think it'd be sick if liquid would sign runaway (apex s2 runner up team), but unless they don't make it out of the group stages like in season 3 I think liquid may be done with overwatch.

as much as a lot of people here hate overwatch for luring away many of tf2's top players, you hate to see blizzard kill their own game competitively with this ridiculous $20 million price tag to join the overwatch league

hyped for an azk cs return and seeing dahang/rapha back to quake though

Asking for 20+ million right out of the gate seems very strange for something so untested, but they are really pushing that they've got 30 million people who own the game.
