"The relationship between long latency responses and height."

I found this while browsing Reddit and I found this study:

http://static-content.springer.com/lookinside/art%3A10.1007%2FBF00314158/001.png
https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/BF00314158

tl:dr The time it takes for signals to go from your brain to motor functions can be affected by your height, which can be represented linearly by y = 0.11x + 2.15, where y = time in milliseconds and x = your height in centimeters

I thought it was interesting because it means your height can affect how long it takes for you to see something on your screen, and reacting to it by dodging, firing back etc.

This may seem like a stupid point, but seeing as the study focuses on one's reactions with their hands and feet based on their height, would your reaction to something you see be affected by your height, since your eyes are right next door to your brain?

interesting, and it only makes sense, but the difference between the reaction times of an average 5'1'' person and a 6 foot person is only like 3ms (according to this); i don't think it's too significant

aren't the signals that travel from your brain through the rest of ur body traveling at like really really fast speeds? I really doubt a couple of inches of extra nerve to travel would make any impact even in milliseconds

a quick google search says the electrical impulses coursing through ur nerves travel almost 400 feet per second

granted if we all had optic fiber spinal cords our electrical impulses would travel roughly 983 million feet per second, which is a little faster

using that number you could use a calculator and see that 1 foot would take 2.5ms which is closeish with what the study is saying

SnackThis may seem like a stupid point, but seeing as the study focuses on one's reactions with their hands and feet based on their height, would your reaction to something you see be affected by your height, since your eyes are right next door to your brain?

the reflex signal would still have to travel to the limbs through the axons in the spinal cord

SnackThis may seem like a stupid point, but seeing as the study focuses on one's reactions with their hands and feet based on their height, would your reaction to something you see be affected by your height, since your eyes are right next door to your brain?

I'm fairly sure that your brain waits for the signals from your feet to arrive before it starts processing anything, because if your brain processed information from your eyes before your feet then things would seem slightly out of sync, i.e you would kick something and you would see the thing being kicked before you felt it.
