Bad Habits from SOAP-DM and/or MGE?

I'm not trying to re-hash the old MGE vs. SOAP DM debate, there are pros and cons to both, and I fully intend to play both of them.

Essentially, I'm looking to improve my DM as much as possible through a healthy mix of SOAP-DM, MGE, tr_newbots, pugging, and scrimming (provided I get picked up on a team). After googling around to get an idea of everyone's opinions on the various methods of improving DM, one consistency was that too much MGE or SOAP-DM can build bad habits, but people rarely got specific. I don't want bad habits, so I'm hoping you can enlighten me as to what to avoid while practicing in these arenas. Or at least specifically what to focus on while practicing to get the most out of my time.

If it matters, I play soldier.

EDIT: On a related note, are there any ammomod servers still active? Preferably west coast?

well the main habit from DM is being too aggro because of the constant health & ammo replenishment after every kill

ammo management is the easy one and if you dont fight it early you will end up nearly holding m1 while fighting at all times even though taking another half second or reloading correctly is really dank

mge comes with two different ammomod arenas.

newbots doesnt help that much, same with most bot maps

you should mostly focus on waddling in dm and try to only jump when you kinda have to, bombing is not good practice

the only bad mge habits i can think of are shotgun denying and counterjumping, counterjumping is fine ingame because sometimes you have to stay alive but in mge its retarded because its a 1v1 and you're jumping away from the fight which doesnt help that much, shotgun denying is kinda dumb specially with people that use gunboats on both pocket and roamer.

like most people i use shotgun in mge but if the other person is running gunboats i'll happily switch since its good for rocket aim

as much as i dislike playing with people that do stuff like playing in cheap spots in mge (ie metal on spire) or do the thing where you rocket jump and you switch to shotgun, if you're actually thinking of doing that shit in actual games, go for it althought it might not be the best practice

it doesnt really matter how you play mge or dm what matters is that you "translate" the dm you get from mge/soap dm into actual games

you should also try playing jump maps or surfing since it also helps with your dm, i would mostly recommend jump maps since you're a soldier main but surfing is still super helpful

High ground/chasing frags - this is a big thing imo because you see so many people chasing for a kill (e.g. running under gully mid to kill someone instead of fighting above). To me this is wrong because the vast majority of the time you'll want to keep high ground and not chase the kill which could easily end up with you losing the mid for your team in a game

try to put yourself in situations you haven't encountered often since at some point in a game it'll come handy. Yeah try getting comfortable with good positions but dont limit yourself to them. Similarly, try positioning in places you would play when playing a proper match

a lot of bad habits from DM revolves around chasing frags and being too aggressive. as soldier, I have a really bad habit of jumping off of high-ground when I play, because when I play DM, I'm usually chasing frags. you can do this with other classes as well, so really pay attention to positioning and all of that when playing actual games. you also essentially have unlimited ammo, I always try to remind myself before I play to pick up every ammo pack ever.

other than that, just challenge yourself. Don't constantly jump everything as soldier, don't just play around a health pack, don't lay sticky traps, etc. I usually enjoy going shotgun only, playing really passive, playing really aggressive, give myself shit positioning and so on when I play DM. MGE is a lot more about aim imo, just focus more on hitting shots rather than getting to 20.

I'm sure it depends on class, but I noticed a few bad habits I had when I first started DMing to improve.

Shooting people from behind in soap DM can be really bad for you and can translate poorly to in game mostly because how you practice is how you improve. You're basically shooting people who for whatever reason (music/no sound/care free) are not aware of your presence so when you switch to in game where people are going to be comming and usually pretty aware of where everyone is, you might find yourself struggling.

I wouldn't worry too much about if you're "back shooting" in DM, unless you catch yourself doing it quite often.

One for Soldier is mostly just constantly jumping, usually not landing for more than a second or two and then jumping again. You start to feel unkillable with regen and jumping to packs, this for the most part doesn't work in scrims or matches, as you'll be jumping people with buffs, not getting health back on kills and then promptly dying because you can't jump out with a full clip.

What do you mean by "waddling"?

I've always done jump maps, so I guess I neglected to mention them because for me, it was implied. Jumping is my strongest skill at the moment.

The blank style of soldier practice, play the ground and go for every shot/fatscout with shotty. It can actually be so much fun in DM.
