This morning I got woken up by some jackass playing the violin at 6am (alarm is still set for quarter past 9...) because my room is right next to the common room (like literally on the other side of the wall next to my bed and my computer -_-). I sent a noise complaint to my RA but I don't think that will stop people keeping me up late watching movirs/TV shows in and laughing super loud. I have earbuds that I could use to fall asleep but I don't really like the feeling of waking up with them in my ears. Also could just use earplugs but it's the same problem. Lately I've been so annoyed by this shit I've been contemplating just dropping out lol. Literally every dorm on campus for some fucking reason only had WiFi and so I get fucked over if anyone in the the common room is using WiFi whole I'm in a game. During open semifinals last week I went to the bathroom at half time to see 4 people with their laptops on the table that's like a foot away from the wall on the other side of me. Needless to say they were probably all bored studying so browsing Facebook on their phones watching meme videos. I don't think it's possible to get a wired connection, no ethernet port in the he room available and the schools IT site basically had a back handed explanation of why their cheap asses decided to skip out on proper Internet. Hopefully I don't get ddosed by my roommate or floor mates during open grand finals this Tuesday :/ (roommates pretty nice in that he studies in the common room when I tell him I have games.
Anyways, to top this all off my desk is actually so small that in order to fit two monitors I have to have my 144hz one at nearly a 45 degree angle and I sit diagonally with my keyboard in my lap (no desk space for a mousepad and keyboard). The room supposedly had nice furnishings, it came with an epic expensive Herman Miller chair with zero padding and is too short for the desk height has arm rests that get in the way and offers no lower back support. Other than that the room is great, but unfortunately these problems are quite a pain in the ass and it's honestly incredibly hard to justidy continuing to play the game especially with my schedule getting much more busy next semester, but I don't want to quit the game just because of some dumb shit like this. /rant
If anyone has suggestions I'm all ears lol. Honestly can't wait until I get to move back home in the summer and have a proper desk/chair/privacy.

quote from my school's IT FAQ page lol:Which residence halls are ' wireless only'?
As of fall 2011, all residence halls and Lincoln Apartments are 'wireless-only'. Wired (Ethernet) Internet access is not available in these buildings. A Wired Ethernet connection is only available in North Village family housing
Can I request that my wired Ethernet jack be activated?
We will not activate Ethernet jacks in residence halls with wireless connectivity. Disabling Ethernet jacks has allowed us to focus resources on one type of network

Why did you install wireless in residence halls and deactivate wired jacks?
We installed wireless in residence halls in response to requests from students made directly to UMass Amherst IT as well as to the offices of the Chancellor, Student Affairs, and Campus Life. Wireless is more convenient and it enables you to connect multiple devices easily. You will have added flexibility in your room and throughout your residence hall, similar to what you may have at home or elsewhere on campus where there is wireless coverage.

The Ethernet cabling in residence halls was aging and only supported limited network speeds. Rather than engaging in a multi-million dollar project to re-wire these buildings, we expanded the campus wireless network. The wireless network can meet students’ current needs and accommodate the growing number of wireless devices students bring to campus. In conjunction with future infrastructure upgrades, the wireless network will support the next generation of wireless-enabled devices and bandwidth-hungry applications.

How does wireless network access compare to the wired network?
Reliability: Your device will be able to choose from several access points from any given location in the residential halls. If an access point fails, the wireless system will automatically identify the failure and increase the power of nearby access points to fill the coverage gap until the defective hardware is replaced. Multiple adjacent access points would need to fail at the same time for wireless connectivity to be significantly impacted. A wired connection may appear more reliable, but it means you can only connect one device to a single network jack. If this jack is disconnected or needs repair, you lose network access entirely.
Speed: For on-campus connections (e.g., connecting to UDrive or other on-campus resources), the wired campus network was configured for speeds of up to 10 Mbps (megabits per second). Actual on-campus wired networking speeds were typically around 4-6 Mbps. With the campus wireless network, connection speeds vary between 2 and 54 Mbps. Actual on-campus wireless speeds will vary based on a number of factors, including the type of device or wireless adapter you're using, your distance from an access point, the amount of interference at your location, and overall building bandwidth usage. Access to off-campus Web sites and resources (e.g., Google, Netflix, etc.) should be the same for wired and wireless connections. If your device has a dual-band adapter, it will be able to better cope with interference, resulting in a faster connection.
Security: There are two wireless networks available on campus. The UMASS wireless network (SSID UMASS) is an “open” network and offers no inherent encryption beyond the login page. On the other hand, eduroam uses the strongest 802.1x security and encryption mechanisms available to create a secure connection between your computer and the campus network. We recommend that you always connect to eduroam. Use our fast and easy-to-use setup wizard, XPressConnect to set up your connection to eduroam.
Environmental Impact: The wireless network requires approximately 75% less materials than the wired network. Due to lower electrical power requirements, installing wireless will also result in a projected savings of between 20 and 40 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per month compared to an upgraded wired network.

Will wired connections still be available in the North Residential Area?
For now, the North Residential Area will have both wired and wireless connectivity. We will decommission the wired jacks in these buildings after we install the same dual-band, 802.11n-capable, access points installed in other residence halls.

hey man i have no actual help for you on the internet thing because i didnt play video games competitively until after college but if you're not being facetious about dropping out because your dorm room situation sucks i would strongly advise against that....

also you don't NEED two monitors to play the game so you might consider packing one of those away if space is really an issue

on another point you actually have the greatest roommate ever if he agrees to go out to the common room to study because you're playing games

seems like that's the best option if there's affordable student apartments near school

living off campus is more fun anyways tbh, at least in my experience

Are you close enough to commute? I lived on campus last year and it was alright but not conducive to great sleeping or studying so I'm commuting this year, and it's been much better. No roomate, saving a ton of money etc.

Are there any apartment style residences? You could ask residence services about getting one for next year perhaps.

A quick google search led me to this (Hey, they got Ethernet too!): https://www.umass.edu/living/residence/north

I don't go to UMass, but on my campus, I've been told that residence apartments aren't that great and can be much more expensive then just finding an apartment to rent off campus.

EDIT: Lmao why are they phasing out Ethernet? That's some bad shit right there.

I'm in a similiar situation now. My dorm building is being expanded by another block, right outside my window about 10-20 meters away, and the workers start drilling and hammering shit at 7am. But at least I have a proper internet connection.

One thing I can say is, if you have a busy semester coming up, you might want to skip next season. Same thing happened to me last season. It sucked because my team had to constantly use a merc and even when I did play, I was bad without practicing and I kept worrying that I should be studying instead of playing right now. I also have a small ass desk, it's about 80cm across and it's uncomfortable to play like this. In the end I didn't enjoy the game at all.

look for a student house, you'll probably save money on rent and have ethernet connection, you'll have to get the other people to agree to split the internet bill though.

Bear I totally feel the irritation building. As a freshman, I am also living in a dorm, and my roommate somehow wastes more time in his life on gaming than I do. We have Ethernet in our room, yet whenever he is playing Overwatch (the only game he plays) my ping skyrockets from 12-20 ping to 200-300. He is also just a very obnoxious person with a loud voice, so sometimes I can't even hear people in mumble over his loud ass screaming about whatever is going on his game. I don't know what to do, so I guess I'll just take the L for the rest of the year.

it traps the wifi particles in your room as carpets are electronically wifi repellant as a carpet is negatively charged while wifi is positivie charged. this means that the wifi particles bounce off the carpet walls and stay inside the room. for maximum wifi connection, a box big enough for you and your computer. then, you wrap the inner box with carpet and put a wifi router into it and turn the router on for only 10 minutes as too much exposure to wifi particles in an contained space can cause prostate cancer

Best thing that you can do tough it out until the end of the year and get your own place off campus next year. I went through what you were going through last year, and I was fortunate enough that my dorm room had an Ethernet jack to connect to.

Either way you're probably better off than I am in terms of Wi-Fi connection while playing

If the dorms suck, move out of the dorms.

If you care about competitive gaming make having a dedicated Ethernet connection a requirement of wherever you live :)

i had to quit playing tf2 while living in dorms for the same exact reasons, you could always complain to your IT department that ethernet or wifi is slow which could prompt a residence hall maintenance on current routers

I think he means to use as insulation to block sound. It's a stereotypical sorority girl thing to hang tapestries on the walls (chances are you've seen one of these at least once) but it does help to muffle noise, at least a little bit.

Internet situation sounds pretty shit, but it's cool that you at least have an understanding roommate. One of mine was an ass.

As far as the noise goes, I recommend picking up a small, loud desk fan and aiming it away from your bed in the winter. It acts as white noise and really helps cancel all the agitating sounds from living in a dorm. Place it closer to your bed so it'll help block noises out better.

As far as your internet goes, I'm not sure how bad it is but if next semester is busy for you, it'd probably be best to just back up for a team anyway. Have time to study and socialize, and then definitely look for off-campus housing for next year. Just be sure to ask about the internet - I live in off campus housing now and the internet is provided by the complex with no upgrade option, so I can not use my own router and it's killed my ability to stream.

Good luck!
