Yes he needs a new rig, hes currently playing on a laptop
Overclocking is a probably, Ill have to teach him how to do it properly.

Now it makes a bit more sense but I think I'm still missing some context. Not going to play the guessing game.

Ok, post here again in June. You said he's willing to wait for the Pascal/Polaris release so I'd recommend him to do just that.

My computer is dying and I am getting bluescreens almost daily, often multiple times daily. I can totally deal with this as it isn't really interrupting anything, I was just wondering if now was a good time to upgrade or if I should wait (though I would like to build it before July 29th as I want to take advantage of the free upgrade to Windows 10)

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/ngxtxr
This is my current idea for an upgrade, please critique my choices. TF2/OW are probably the hardest games I will ever run.

I'd need to know your budget but no, I don't see a reason to upgrade now or at all for that matter. Your GPU is good enough to get 60 fps in Overwatch on low settings and for TF2 it doesn't matter.
The only thing you could upgrade is your CPU, but that would mean a new mobo and RAM too so it'd be quite expensive and new CPUs relevant for you are only getting released later this year (which is when you might want to upgrade).

Neither of those are likely to be the cause of bluescreens. 90% of the time it's Windows and you can just fix or reinstall that without buying new hardware.

Yeah it is probably windows as my checkdisk comes up clean, as does the windows memory test. What should I be looking at in terms of a CPU upgrade?

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($343.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170MX-Gaming 5 Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($112.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: Kingston HyperX Fury Black 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory ($59.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Case: Fractal Design Node 804 MicroATX Mid Tower Case ($106.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $623.95
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
Generated by PCPartPicker 2016-05-12 21:40 EDT-0400

Some notes:
- Upgrading from a 3570k (which will be recycled hence the upgrade)
- Want to overclock this shit to the max (have a cooler already)
- Want dat smaller form factor
- I don't know what the fuck I'm doing
- Have a shitty GPU (hd7800)
- Does the RAM matter?
- What are the differences between all these different motherboards, I need a z170 to overclock it right?

I am going to be upgrading the GPU a bit later on when I actually have a mind to play games other than rendering video, TF2, and simulation games maybe when all these shiny new cards come out

my question is.. is there anything I can do "better" to optimize my upgrade? I'm thinking no.

CJBowman69Looking to build a PC for Gaming and occasionally programming with java and various other languages as i've got an apprenticeship as an analyst programmer. I'm new to building PC's but have always wanted to, im willing to spend around £600-£800. Any recommendations on what to get?
and should i wait until after summer when all the new processors and stuff come out so the older stuff is cheaper?

For around 1000USD you can definitely put yourself together a decent little rig. Newer CPUs being released soon are actually the extreme version of Broadwell chips for Intel.

Best bet would to stick with a 6700k i7 and a z170 motherboard for a decent price then. GPUs are coming out around the end of the month, beginning of next so its your call if you can wait till then for them to be released.

Good luck with the build!

For TF2 and OW I don't think going above an i3 would do anything. That means I know it won't do anything for TF2 and I'm pretty sure OW is gpu bound, although I haven't tested it or seen any tests specifically testing that.

I don't really like mITX since those cases tend to be fairly cramped (this with more cables since your PSU is non-modular) so if you don't really need it (you had a full ATX tower before) I would stick to mATX. You're also really limited in terms of slots. Upgrade RAM? Both slots already full, need to replace your RAM and buy new one instead of just adding two more sticks. Want a soundcard? Not happening.
You're also cutting corners on the SSD.

What's your budget? Assuming 400$ I'd do something like this or even just keep the old case:
PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Well you can try buying the cards that will release in the first and second week of June now. Chances are however that no matter how close they are, you'll have to wait until then (unless you are capable of very limited time travel).
Generally even if they were released yet I wouldn't buy before I've seen reviews.
So you'll have to wait until the start of June, like I said you should.

I'm still missing some context though.
What are you going to be using it for?
Which 700W PSU?

#1240
-Only worth upgrading for rendering, don't expect any gains in TF2 (assuming the 3570K is overclocked).
-Which cooler?
-mATX ftw, I'm with you on that one.
-Looks pretty good actually.
-GPU doesn't matter for TF2
-Well for rendering you probably want 16GB. Beyond that it doesn't matter much.
-Yes, you need Z170 to overclock. Other than that if you don't know what it is you probably don't need it. Z170 in itself is high end, so even the cheapest Z170 mobo should have everything you'll need and then some more.

There's always some things you can optimize, but in your case not too much unless you're willing to wait for Kaby Lake (new CPUs). Even though the launches should start in Q3 2016 it'll take until Q2 2017 for everything to be released and it's rumoured that Desktop SKUs are some of the last to be released so I wouldn't hold my breath.

The Node 804 is pretty expensive for a mATX case, so there's definitely cheaper alternatives. It's also really wide, so if you want that it's great, but it's not exactly small form factor.

Other than that a cheaper mobo (sale ended-> +30$), some cheaper and faster RAM -> a bit over 50$ saved.

Depends on what you mean with "after summer". With your budget you're looking at Kaby Lake, which as mentioned above will start releasing in Q3 2016 but it might take until Q2 2017 for the Desktop parts. It might be worth waiting until August if you're not in a hurry, because by then we should know what will be released when. If the Desktop CPUs are planned for September you can wait, if they're planned for 2017 you still get to enjoy the new GPUs.

Other than that the usual preliminary question: Overclocking yes or no?

PSU is AX750 (I've had this for a few years now it has been going strong :D)

Going to be somewhat overkill for p much any game but I'm okay with that. Would be nice if it could stream with little issues, too, or I can just use my old pc for a streaming PC if needed.

Waiting til sometime in June is fine.

I bought a cheap windows pc off craigslist so I could upgrade it with parts I already owned and run the esea malware but didn't realize the PCIx slots were low-profile on the box I bought. I only own one low-profile card and it's old and pretty bad, a BFG Tech GeForce 9400 GT BFGE941024GTE 1GB DDR2. I assumed any kind of discrete card was better than the 2gb integrated gfx but this one might be old enough that it's worse than using the onboard stuff.

Can anyone recommend me a 2013-era low-profile gfx card that I can find on eBay or craigslist? I was gonna grab any cheap-looking ivy bridge-compatible low-profile card but I realize I might actually get a decent recommendation by asking here. I don't play many games besides TF2 so I don't need a gtx 1070 or anything.

It's odd that PCPartPicker doesn't have a filter by low profile.

The best low profile card I could find in 2013 was the Radeon 7750 (I put one in a HTPC): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814129271

Currently it looks like you can also get low profile Geforce 950s, which should be faster: http://www.anandtech.com/show/10237/evga-releases-geforce-gtx-950-low-power-graphics-cards-with-75w-tdp

Assuming the parts in the PC you got aren't too custom, you could consider buying a normal case and moving everything into that so you can use full width GPUs.

Ok, post again in September.

Same, post again in June in case I forget.

Basically what #1248 said. The best thing to do would be to just move everything to a normal sized case.

There is no such thing as "ivy-bridge-compatible". It's got a PCIe slot? Any PCIe GPU will work (and you won't find anything but PCIe GPUs these days).

Ok, post again in September.

Same, post again in June in case I forget.

Hi, I was pointed to this thread by a friend because I'm getting a new pc soon (building from scratch)
Currently I get about 40 fps when staring at a wall, and 20 when a rocket explodes in my face, so I'd be satisfied with a constant 200 fps. I can save for anything under $3000 basically, but I wanna know the min and max I should spend.

So I want to ask Setsul: what pc parts would you recommend for me with this criteria,
Price range (minimum for TF2): ~1300$
Price range (for high-graphic pc games): ~2500$
Main game: TF2, but I also want to play high-gpu games on high-ultra settings like The Division, Borderlands 2, maybe Skyrim, etc.
Also of course I plan to game on 144hz.

The only thing I need besides the pc is a monitor and a mouse.

Good news, you won't have to spend nearly as much.
Some questions first:
1. Can you wait until June?
2. Can you wait until October?
3. Do you want >144fps in those other games?
4. Monitor resolution 1920*1080 or higher?
5. Do you want Lightboost?
6. Do you want FreeSync/G-Sync?
7. Are you going to overclock?
8. When would you ideally want to build it?

1. I'm planning to buy the parts in June, either on the 1st or near the end of the month, and I probably won't get the new 1080 card (if that's why you asked)
2. No
3. I'd be happy with 100 in other games
4. yeah just 1080p
5. I've heard a little bit about lightboost, is it worth it and does it really help?
6. Isn't Gsync bad for gaming/general?
7. Probably not
8. ASAP, my situation is a person promised me a budget for getting a new pc as a gift. If they can't afford to help me out or don't for whatever reason then I have to work for it (3 weeks earnings)

1./8. is not ideal since there will be new AMD cards in June which should be interesting.
2. Same
3. Easy in Borderlands 2 and Skyrim, but not really happening in The Division anyway.
4. Ok.
5. Hard to know if you'd like if you've never seen it.
6. I don't think you know what G-Sync/FreeSync are. You should probably read up on it.
7. Ok.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean with "Price range (minimum for TF2): ~1300$".

Regarding 3. http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/the-division-pc-graphics-performance-benchmark-review,6.html
A 300-400$ GPU right now gets you ~60fps, if you were willing to wait you could get >80 at the same price. Your choice.

Ok I did some research on Lightboost and Gsync/Freesync. I definitely want those, I was thinking either the Benq or Asus 144hz monitor for that?
Also I'm more open to overclocking as long as its not complicated.
I'll probably be buying mid-June just to wait and see the new GPUs, and by minimum for TF2 I meant "What's the minimum I would need to play TF2" but nevermind that since I'd rather save and run more gfx intensive games

Games like TF2 or just TF2?
And what games are like TF2?

Asus and BenQ make about 100 different monitors. I'm not sure which ones you mean.
Do you want a 24" or 27" monitor?
Overclocking is fairly time consuming though.

Oh and this is something that really baffles me: how is AMD's 9590 8-core 4.3ghz processor sold for $200 while Intel is selling the i7 5960K 8-core 3.0ghz processor for $1,000?

Are intel processors/graphics cards innately better in some way? Or are they just purely more expensive? Please explain this to me.

Since TF2 is CPU bound then I'll probably get the i7 6700k or the top AMD one.
And for the monitors I meant the VG248QE and the XL24-something. The 24 inch 144hz monitors.

To be honest I have no idea about CPU scaling in CS:GO at the moment.
For TF2 an i3 with integrated graphics would be enough.
Just to be safe in the CPU department I picked an i5.
Same for the GPU, you might need it depending on the settings in CS:GO, so better safe than sorry.

Ok, there's a number of reasons.
It's literally an overclocked FX-8350 which means:
1. Power consumption is insane.
2. It's a 4 years old CPU. You wouldn't buy an i7-3770K nowadays, would you? (Hint: they aren't even sold anymore)
3. The architecture doesn't really use cores, instead it uses modules which can run 2 threads. Similar to how each core on an i7 (or i3) can run to threads, but not quite the same.
4. The architecture got a lot of problems. None of them are crippling on their own, but combined the whole thing is just a giant trainwreck.
Most importantly single threaded performance on these AMD CPUs is pretty bad. Games (especially TF2) pretty much only care about single threaded performance. Sure you get some benefit from adding more cores (up until 3 for TF2, 95% of all games top out at less than 4 cores), but beyond 4 there's nothing left to gain. So what you'd get for 200$ is 8 "cores" (see 3.) which are annoyingly slow and 4 of which won't do anything. You can see why an i5 with just 4 cores that will all be used and are significantly faster is a better deal at 200$.

Intel sells 6-core CPUs for 400$ (logical step up from the 4 core i7s at ~300$), the 8-cores being 1000$ is just the usual "it's the fastest so we're letting you pay through your nose". See nVidia's Titans.

Not sure why you mentioned GPUs. Neither the 5960X nor the 9590 possess an iGPU. In general Intel's iGPUs are ok, since they are essentially free, but won't hold a candle to a decent dedicated GPU (decent starts somewhere between 50 and 100$) (both AMD and nVidia).

So yes, the Intel CPUs right now are simply better and those 200$ "8-cores" (which aren't real 8-cores) actually compete with Intel's i5 4-cores that are similarly priced. AMD Zen might change that, but we won't see those CPUs until later this year.

Like I said, forget about the AMD one. You don't need an i7 either for games. Nor do you need a -K version if you're not going to overclock.

You'll still have to decide on the matter of FreeSync and Lightboost.
Here's what I'd do plus some options for monitors, depending on what you decide you want.

Wow, that's alot cheaper than I expected. If I hadn't asked here I would've gotten an i7 or even the 9590.

Thanks for the advice! I'll be buying these exact parts (maybe 16gb of ram and a 500gb ssd instead of hdd). Yes I do want lightboost and freesync, so which of those monitors would be best? I've heard good reviews about the Benq one.

Edit: oh the Nixeus Vue has freesync
