Comanglia's Config / FPS Guide
posted in Customization

I'm currently working on an update.

The new config will more or less be a fork of mastercomfig. Somewhere around the low to medium-low preset with particular attention to maximizing performance for Higher End PCs. The primary reason I'm doing this is because the current Low and Medium-Low presets are more tailored to low-end machines or have commands that are buggy, thus leading to a bad or subpar experience on PCs that can take advantage of some of the settings only found on the medium or above preset.

I still highly recommend checking out mastercomfig if you want something and you feel uncertain if my config is for you. http://www.teamfortress.tv/42867/mastercomfig-fps-customization-config

More to come soon™.

___________OP___________
After having 3 other people use "My FPS config" as thread names I figured I should make an actual official thread about my cfg.

Max FPS Guide

pre step 1. Have a good PC that you can/know how to overclock. (not applicable to everyone)
1. Install my config. This is where I have mine installed.

Show Content
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf\custom\my_custom_stuff\cfg\gfx.cfg
I may or may not be working on a new config as of October 2018

2. Set you PC to "High Performance" mode http://www.okcomputersolution.com/easyblog/windows-7-performance-tips-enable-high-performance-mode.html
3. Adjust Visual effects of windows to "Best Performance" http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/how-adjust-visual-settings-windows-7-best-performance.htm
4. Launch options "-dxlevel 81 -full -w WIDTH -h HEIGHT -console -novid" (full screen performs better, DX 81 might not be best for all users)
5. Install No Hats Mod

Harbls No Hat's Mod

No Hat's Mod Particle Effects remover (Very Few Unusual Effects remain)

The Benchmarks http://teamfortress.tv/thread/20172/my-fps-config#18
4:3 Lowest FOV, Highest FPS
16:10 Middleground for both
16:9 Highest FOV, Lowest FPS

http://www.twitch.tv/comanglia I have some highlights with using this CFG, you might even see it live.

FAQ

Q: What is the best OS for FPS?
A: Technically speaking Linux, but for most users it's actually Windows 8.1 or 10

Q: My Game is stuttering a lot? (Laptop Users)
A: Add a FPS cap I typically recommend around fps_max 132

Q: Why is m_rawinput set to 0? (I've commented this section out)
A: Certain programs are not compatible with it, some OS's don't work well with it, and some people use alternative versions of rawinput that can't have this on.

Q: How/Where can I add you at?
A: If you can't figure this out you probably shouldn't add me.

Q: Why are my map textures strobing?
A: You're probably running an Nvidia card while in DX 8, either switch to DX 9 or in some cases update your driver.

Q: What does "x" command do?
A: I may or may not know ask below.

Q: I'm crashing a lot and I don't know why?
A: Odds are it's cause you have a below quad-core cpu OR having a DX 9 error OR you crashed when alt+tabbing and should take out -dxlevel from the launch options. Plus several other things I haven't quite go to yet.

Thank You's / Credits

Chris - Without him NONE of this would've happened at least from me
Rhapsody - If he didn't post a config awhile back that I thought he messed up pretty badly on I probably wouldn't have released mine. That and he helped me with a lot of testing / finding some new commands.
The Regime / Moose - Without having played on this team or spoken with Moose I wouldn't have found this config, or had much reason to update it.
Valve - For letting so many commands be user defined.
meb - for making the TF2 Benchmark thread to give us a basis for improving on our configs
sage - for updating my config and even hosting it as "ComangliaComs"
Mastercomfig - for making a great update and bringing a lot of understanding to what exactly is going on with most of these commands.

All my CFGs are compatible with DX 9, I just don't typically recommend DX 9 unless it's for my Cinema cfg.

I did the whole Set you PC to "High Performance and the following steps and my fps on the benchmark went from 172.1 to 186.4

How is the bad quality PC fps cfg giving less results than the Good quality PCs one?
What changed between those two?

uhhh, quite alot the biggest reason why though for the fps difference is related to threading. Nearly no PC that would require the toaster cfg could support the threading commands of a Good Quality PC. Their was also several other changes, that highly effects how the game looks and are GPU dependent. Most people who I would classify as Toaster users are people with really old desktops / low end laptops with Integrated or APU graphics.

I really like the cinema.cfg. Finally something I can recommend to the newest players and not having to talk about lerp, fov, automatic reload, etc.

I don't remember if I put in automatic reload or not...

I know I have fast weapon switching, fov 90, and the interp already though in all of them (or at least they should be)

Is there any difference between setting visual effects to "best performance" and using these options?

http://i.imgur.com/RiUvfW1.png

("../Team Fortress 2/hl2.exe" > properties > "Compatibility" tab)

Been using it for a long time, it disables aero and gets rid of input lag while TF2 is running but resets back to your standard theme when you exit the game, so Windows doesn't look like ass.

assuming the 1st line is "disable desktop composition" I believe that should work fine.

Technically what he said has possible meanings.
1. He legitimately thought I put no mention of mods in there and thought of those 2.
or
2. He thinks I should add more just like the other 2 I mentioned

and as answer to his inquiry I did add 2 more at the end of the 2nd Post (can't blame him it's A LOT of text)

what is bullet hole dust?

edit: should also have a warning that raw input is turned off, i wouldn't have noticed if someone didn't point it out. Or better yet have it commented out and let whatever the original config the user had set take care of it.

m_rawinput isn't "turned off" it's actually commented out so your previous settings should remain correct assuming they've been saved before

hooliadd instructions on disabling non-microsoft services and startup entries via msconfig

While I have done this for myself, I don't feel like the performance gain is as significant as some people believe, and could easily have someone disable something that they actually need/use

mat_mipmaptextures 0 / 1
https://imgur.com/a/gH9gL

Thought I'd let people know about this command it's a (almost) purely aesthetic difference
default it 1, and as far as I could tell setting it to 0 doesn't play well with the Cinema config with certain stairs/walkways

Hey I was using one if your older fps configs before and decided to try out your fps config for toasters here to see if it makes a difference. I really like it but it seems to be quite blurry. Do you know the command/s to make it less blurry :3

you're probably running it at a really low res. change your launch options to -full -w 1280 -h 720 or some higher res.
