I second the thermaltake meka g1. I've had it for a year or so and my gf just bought one, loves it too.

I don't own one, but a friend of mine has the Zowie celeritas black. From the short time I spent playing with it, my impression would be its a solid board but really lacks anything to set it apart. For the price, I don't think its particularly worth listing as its the kind of board I would expect to come in closer to 85-90$ instead of 120$. It lacks the prestige and quality feel of a ducky or filco and is just barely cheaper. They claim it has the best response time of any keyboard, I don't know how to confirm any of that if its even possible, but that seems like a weak argument when significantly nicer boards can be had for very little more.

Johny_16_Could someone explain me what's all that about the blue / brown / red switches?

Different types of switches feel and sound different.

Some switches are "tactile" meaning they have a bump you can feel when the keypress "actuates" or in other words, when the keypress is registered. MX Blues, MX Browns, MX Greens, and Buckling Spring switches are all tactile.

A subset of tactile switches are "clicky" switches. Clicky switches produce a noise when you feel the bump, so you get a mix of audible and tactile feedback when your keypress is registered, at the cost of being noisy. MX Blues, MX Greens, and Buckling Spring switches are all clicky.

Some switches are linear, which means they don't have a bump and/or click when your keystroke registers, and feel smooth all the way until your key has "bottomed out" or in other words can longer be depressed any further. These switches tend to be better for FPS games because they are easier to press in succession than tactile switches. MX Reds and MX Blacks are linear switches.

Another type of mechanical switch is called a topre switch, which combine a mechanical mechanism with a spring and switch with a cupped rubber dome, which results in a very unique feel. However, topre switches are VERY expensive, and probably not worth it if you just want a keyboard for gaming.

Finally, all types of switches will take different amounts of force to actuate, which results in you as the user having to provide more or less force for different types of switches.

MX Blacks are linear and take 60g of force to actuate, MX Reds are linear and take 45g of force to actuate, MX Blues are tactile, clicky, and take 50g of force to actuate, MX Browns are tactile and take 45g of force to actuate, MX Blues are tactile, clicky, and take 50g of force to actuate, Buckling Spring switches are tactile, clicky, and take 65g of force to actuate, MX Greens are tactile, clicky, and take 60g of force to actuate, Topre switches are weighted differently depending on the keyboard model, but can be considered a tactile switch and take anywhere from 30-55g of force to actuate.

For purely typing, I would reccomend a keyboard with MX Blues.

For purely gaming, I would reccomend a keyboard with MX Blacks or MX Reds, depending on if you have a tendancy to mispress keys often, since MX Reds are lighter and easier to hit by accident.

For a mix of typing and gaming, I would reccomend a keyboard with MX Browns.

I would not reccomend a keyboard with buckling springs, topre switches, or MX greens for someone new to mechanical keyboards, as keyboards with these switches tend to be expensive and/or hard to find.

There are also a slew of modifcations you can make to your keyboard to make it feel different as an advanced user, such as a dental band mod, or using o-rings on each switch.

A good starter mechanical keyboard available in multiple switch types is the Cooler Master CM Storm Quickfire Rapid, which can be found with MX Red, Black, Blue, and Brown switches, and is relatively inexpensive while still being fairly high quality.

I would reccomend ordering a mechanical switch sampler to see which switch you like the best before ordering a keyboard, such as one of these http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/products/sampler-kit-1.html.

There are lots of communities online that have a focus on mechanical keyboards, or will occasionally talk about mech keyboards, such as reddit.com/r/mechanicalkeyboards, geekhack.org, deskthority.net, 4chan.org/g/, as well as countless others.

What other mechanical keyboard models (and I'm looking for cherry browns) than the quickfire TK have an integrated numpad/arrows/navigation area? It's the layout I'm looking to get in particular, but I want to make sure there aren't others out there, and it's not the easiest layout to search for in places.

What are people's thoughts on WASD Keyboards? I'd love to buy a custom mechanical keyboard - but if I'm going to spend the money then IT MUST LAST.

I've torn my $10 keyboard to shreds in about 2-3 months. It's been a nuisance and I'm paying the price for not spending the money.

They are solid.

It is worth noting that almost any reliable mechanical brand uses nearly the same keycaps though and can be customized later if for example you wanted the fancy lighting of a ducky AND some custom caps. For this reason I do not think the price tag on WASD is totally fair, but that's just me.

Here's what I want:

- MX Cherry Blue/Green caps. I do a good bit of typing outside of gaming. I'll add O-rings if the sound gets to be problematic.
- Heavyweight and durable enough to handle traveling between LAN, work environments, and home.
- I don't want any LED backlighting. I find it to be obnoxious.
- I despise the whole "gaming" look with snakes/flames/ridiculous color schemes. I'm 25, and I don't find that stuff "cool" anymore. Simplicity is a good thing.

The WASD customization tool allows me to have what I want - but the price is about $40 more than I'd like to spend.

I've also looked at things like this:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8510124&CatId=142

Are Corsair as good with their keyboards as they are with everything else? If so, then I can save about $55+ and get this one instead.

Sounds like das would be a good board choice for you. On corsair, they are not the absolute highest end of keyboard makers but I had a k60 for a while and it was very good for its cost. Do note that you linked one with red switches though.

i think i'm going to buy the noppoo choc mini tenkeyless with red switches because i'm in the mood to try something different and i like the layout of the F keys compared to my current keyboard, which has an awkward gap that puts them farther away from the home row.

http://www.amazon.com/Noppoo-Mechanical-Gaming-Keyboard-Switches/dp/B00A45WK1S/ref=pd_sbs_op_1

anyone have any thoughts on this? also should i buy o-rings? random thought but besides noise reduction, o-rings might increase APM because it would shorten your keystroke?

i would def recommmend the Nopoo choc mini.

I have it with brown switches, but no o-rings.

The F1,F2 keys, etc, are very well places on the keyboard.

Def satisfied with this keyboard!

recommend.

So I decided that I want to replace this keyboard with a mechanical one: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/dynex-keyboard/2619316.p?id=1218340592569&skuId=2619316

I asked on Twitter, and I got KBC Pure, Poker II, Choc Mini, Corsair K65, a Filco, or a Quickfire Rapid. I like how the KBC Pure/Poker II look (aside from the font on the Poker II- and "ENJOY YOUR FEELING"), but it might be nice to have separate F-keys. I do realize that I almost never use the F-keys though.

I'm thinking about getting brown switches, but I feel like I need to try each type of switch first. I'd probably get a red or black otherwise (blue will be too loud).

Anyone have suggestions for me on which of these to get, or if I should look at another?

Of those that you listed the filco is of the highest quality, but none are what I would consider bad boards. I do recommend, however, ordering a swtich sampler kit if you are unsure which switches you are interested in using.

What do you mean shredding through boards? Are you wearing out the keys? If that is the case I suggest looking for a board with PBT so they won't wear out (as opposed to ABS). Most keyboards use ABS so you'll have to do a bit of hunting. I think most notably are Ducky and some Choco's that use PBT.

I heard the Razer Blackwidow Ultimate isn't that bad (Was like 120$ last time i saw on Newegg). I currently have a Logitech G710+, its quiet due to some cushions they add, but they can be clicky if you remove the pads (They're Cherry MX Blues). Overall i like it :)

I spent a day looking for a keyboard but I haven't had any luck, hopefully someone here can help me. Also I'm Canadian so that's probably my issue.

Looking for a TKL, with brown switches (or red if I'm desperate enough). I'm hoping to spend somewhere around $100, all I've found so far though is around $150 + shipping.

Bonus points if I can pick it up in a store in Ottawa and save on shipping.

reillyI spent a day looking for a keyboard but I haven't had any luck, hopefully someone here can help me.
