Long story short my pc is terribad and i can't properly play a game older than it. Dual core 2.2 ghz (overclocked to 2.6) and an hd 5670. I'm already using pretty much everything to increase my fps, chris config, nohatsmod, dx81.

My average fps are less than 60 and it drops badly to 20 in maps like viaduct and barnblitz. The bad thing is that i main scout.

My last resort is lowering the resolution i guess. Do i really gain some fps if i play at 640x480 (currently 1440x900) or am i doomed to be bad forever? Do you have any othet tips to increase fps besides buying a new computer?

lowering resolution will almost always give you better performance. what os are you running, and do you run tf2 in a window?

That PC shouldn't be lagging as much as it is, maybe update your drivers or make sure your not running anything heavy while you are gaming.

And yes, lowering the resolution will result in a fps boost.

I started playing tf2 with worse specs than your computer right now. You could play 800x600 and be perfectly fine on almost all the maps (Maybe not viaduct, it'll be 50-60) Like narf said, lowering your resolution will give you a huge fps boost.

640x480 is your new best friend. Don't forget, his birthday's coming up in September.

Also I played a season and an off season with 15-30 average fps on scout. It's not fun but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Useful things:

Low Resolution (Yes, it does help.)

Playing in Windows Classic (Right click desktop, personalize, scroll down)

Configs (Chris', ect)

Knowing if your computer runs better in dx9, or dx8. (I have a really bad computer BUT, since it's newer I run better in dx9.)

If you need more help, add me. http://steamcommunity.com/id/SYLVESTERCAT I can help ya a bit easier there. :)

Your definition of unplayable is very different to mine.

man i remember when i used to play on my shitty mac if the net_Graph even hit 60 fps I would open the blinds and see if all the planets had aligned.

I did some benchmarks but the results are kinda disappointing:

demo 1 1440x900

11302 frames 201.558 seconds 36.07 fps (17.83 ms/f) 7.473 fps variability

demo 1 640x480

11302 frames 188.165 seconds 40.06 fps (16.65 ms/f) 8.087 fps variability

----------

demo 2 1440x900

17427 frames 287.541 seconds 40.61 fps (16.50 ms/f) 7.833 fps variability

demo 2 640x480

17427 frames 263.510 seconds 46.13 fps (15.12 ms/f) 8.487 fps variability

----------

demo 3 1440x900

13372 frames 218.422 seconds 41.22 fps (16.33 ms/f) 9.543 fps variability

demo 3 640x480

13372 frames 200.514 seconds 46.69 fps (15.00 ms/f) 10.069 fps variability

----------

There is no big difference lowering the resolution, any idea why?

I'm playing full screen not windowed btw

I believe if you play native resolution with the widowed mode it gives you a small fps boost

It's your CPU that's holding you back. Any dual core CPU (even a latest generation i5/i7 with the game locked down to two threads) can easily be maxed out by TF2. The HD 5670 really isn't too bad for TF2 which is why you are hardly seeing any FPS gains when you reduce your resolution. My laptop with a Phenom II X4 X920 (equivalent to 2.2GHz Athlon II quad core) with a Mobility Radeon HD 5650 (a slower desktop HD 5670 essentially) easily goes down to 25-30 FPS on lower settings, and in the benchmark demo it only does 50 FPS average when my 4.2GHz i7-4770K (using 4 threads) does ~130. TF2 is just one of those games that is unbalanced resource wise in that it requires a good CPU more than a good GPU.

Isn't that opposite actually? Windowed noborder makes system to render other stuff as well for faster alt-tab etc. - opposed to fullscreen where system should act in "this is the program running, focusing resources here" way

Lowering resolution only has a big fps boost in dx9. If your gpu can handle dx9 switch to that, a low res and do a benchmark, I'd be curious to see the results.

SylvesterKnowing if your computer runs better in dx9, or dx8. (I have a really bad computer BUT, since it's newer I run better in dx9.))

I just switched from dx81 to dx95 with Chris' dx9 frames and I get WAY smoother performance now. I always thought it was odd that the game was graphically stuttery on dx81, so I figured I'd try something else out and was pleasantly surprised.

When I am playing on 6v6 format, I usually have like 40-50 FPS and of course that higher FPS would be better, but after a lot of time on it I got used to it (I mostly play medic and soldier so it is not as terrible as if I was scout/sniper). On jump maps and mge I have around 100. And on pubs, it is pretty much unplayable for me, so I don't really pub anymore (10-20 FPS and stuttering).
