Although I am no longer a competitive player, nor the original gotfraggon, I'd like to share some insight after playing and retiring from competitive after about 3 1/2 years or so. It's funny how much the scene has changed, or at least has from my perspective, originally being one of the low/mid kids that followed all of the 'better' players on gotfrag when there was only an invite and an open division. The early seasons are so much different than the ones we have now 10+ seasons later but for different reasons.
There has been a peak I believe, in skill level, especially brought out by i49. The best of the best are actually the best now, no longer does it feel like the best could be better. Compared to invite season say, 5, the best were good but nowhere near how good the players are today. Players that started out from the very bottom, the ones that I associated myself with, became friends with, and have played with and against in all divisions are in such different places than I remember it's weird.
It's weird seeing 6 cuties as an invite team, the team just sticks out to me the most, they haven't changed nearly anything since their first season of open and here they are in invite. Invite is very weird this season, after just looking over the rosters (I apologize in advance, I haven't seen/watched any of the teams or players play in a few months), it seems like there are 4 teams that I would consider invite teams (iT, Mix^, Watch, 123) and the other 4 teams seem so out of place. It's odd to me, as the seasons have gone on the level of skill has risen in a lot of players, but the best are still up there, with minor new players in between (rr, xalox, bdonski, squid).
It's weird seeing who players are playing with today as well. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought squid would play on Mixup, or any team with Platinum for that matter (first season of pinball wizards in invite I think? Platinum ranted on squid so much lol). Even though I don't play the game nearly at all anymore, I still feel proud and good when I look at the players that still are. Everyone who is in invite now makes me proud, as almost all started with no other competitive fps experience and have all 'grown up' in TF2 to become where they are today.
This being such a small community has a real impact on everyone. Think before you speak in game, don't blindly hate players that play the same small niche competitive game that you for any reasons. This community is really one of the greatest parts I've experienced about playing TF2 competitively and although I'm not longer a part it will always live on. You're all awesome, keep doing what you're doing, thanks to everyone I've ever played with/against/watched/seen and talked to.

this is a really interesting thing to say because i feel there are still a few players who mechanically and dm wise stand out to me as people who have kept grinding/improving over people who just know how to play the game
