kirbyDamn, that sucks. Your TFC were neato. Sniping in TFC was something else. I always wondered, if you could have sniping work in TF2 like it did in TFC (hold m1, release to shoot), would you?

It's pretty simple to make a script for it (there was one floating around for a while, but I didn't care for the way it felt). The movement delay after shooting in TF2 kind of makes sniper vs. sniper a pain in the ass, so sniping duels just kind of suck in TF2 compared to TFC.

It may just be me, but sniping in Highlander is more of a challenge then it is in 6's.

After a while, Highlander players just KNOW if a Sniper is there in higher divisions. You don't do as much because there's a Sniper on the other team as well (In 6's if you're sniping and there is not a Sniper on the other team, who's there to kill the Sniper? The Roamer/Scouts? A Scout/Soldier isn't a good trade if they get killed for trying to go after the Sniper.) You really can't do anything as a Sniper in HL if the other Sniper is just better.

In 6's, a Soldier or a Scout will try and get the Sniper.
In Highlander, the Soldier, Scout, Spy, and Sniper will try to get the Sniper.

There's just more things to stop Snipers from sniping in Highlander, so Highlander Snipers who shine got their fame from their effort. I'm not saying that it's EASY to Snipe in 6's. If you don't make every headshot you're playing 5v6. Since there aren't enough players, it's easier to focus on a Sniper and once someone is sniped, he'll get called out immediately.

When you start streaming again, you should see if there are any servers that aren't full of bots and play a few rounds.

As Brandname mentioned, there is a script to mimic the tfc sniper somewhat, but it feels really clunky and awkward.

IMO there should be an unlock for the sniper (The Classic) that underperformed in damage, but functioned in a similiar way to the TFC "click to charge" mechanic. (side note: the huntsman sort of already does, as unsatisfying as that is)

Yes he would. That is assuming he didn't cheat. He had 2 accounts and one of them was VAC'd, it was after he quit comp, but once it happened he all but disappeared. He was one of the only snipers in TF2 I watched and thought something was fishy, but that was a really long time ago so who is to say?

He was a beast, that cannot be denied, and he would certainly be on my list if he was still active and doing now what he did then.

In my experience, and not to bring on the HL hate, but HL players (unless also 6v6 players) really have no concept of how to dodge to avoid a sniper or are just to involved in other things to take the time to do it, whereas in 6v6 almost all players go into "can't headshot me" mode when they try to attack a sniper. This makes 6's sniping much harder, compounded by the fact that there are less players to shoot at (easy targets like pyros, heavies, and engies) and more of a focus on you when you snipe (since whenever a sniper appears in a 6v6 game the other team usually makes it their modus operandi to kill him).

Sniper v sniper can be challenging, but it's more of a nuisance, and in my experience it makes sniping in highlander it's own little mini-game. It's fun and I love it, but I would never pride myself or admire another sniper for their ability to counter-snipe, specifically when in TF2 it is so one dimensional.

It is true that there is a skill and talent to counter-sniping that you don't often see in 6v6 (anymore that is: back in the day gravelpit was all sniper v sniper, and maps like freight/yukon/follower saw a lot of sniper v sniper action), I just don't think that skill is anything particular spectacular. No one is putting the counter-snipe kill in their frag-vid, HL or not.

I would agree sniping in 6s is more difficult because they actually focus the sniper when they know your running it and they have better movement. Most top platinum players also play 6s though besides the utility class players so their movement is usually just as good though but since it's a different format they still have to walk into sightlines quite a lot.

You bring up a lot of countersniping which is actually not that important of a skill to have since there are so many other classes in HL that can kill the sniper. You can avoid the other sniper a lot of the time on some maps. Lets take a look at a scrim log on lakeside which is a heavy sniper map.

http://logs.tf/75302

I had 14 sniper kills which would seem like a lot but is only actually 22% of my kills and i was focusing on the other sniper whenever possible.

http://logs.tf/81353

Here's a log on pl_borneo where i only had 3 sniper kills because you can just avoid the other sniper if you want to.

Also on top of "best snipers" i would say there would have to be 2 different categories for hl and 6s sniping. I would consider sheep clockwork and powah to be the best 6s snipers and paragon jake phaze and paradox to be some of the best hl snipers.

I also had the challenge of sniping vs clockwork and powah briefly back in season 8 which was really fun it's a shame they don't really like the format.

If you don't make every headshot you're playing 5v6. Since there aren't enough players, it's easier to focus on a Sniper and once someone is sniped, he'll get called out immediately.

In HL, you get infinitely more opportunities to take shots and there are many classes that don't have advanced mobility on the field (Heavy, Sniper, Pyro, etc.) and since Sniper is 9v9 is standard, you are not burdening your team by playing the class.

In 6s, it's really fucking hard, even if you outright amazing at the class. I'm not going to say that Max! is a bad sniper, but he would not thrive in a 6s environment as strongly as he does in HL, and he knows that damn well since he's not a complete stranger to 6s. We've seen him, Paragon, powah, etc. play HL and top frag every now and then on Sniper, but if they were to run full time Sniper in 6s, they would get destroyed unless it was bound to be a curbstomp in the end anyway.

Soldier, Spy, Scout, and Sniper are all flank/pick classes, so it's no surprise for them to be delegated with the task of killing the other teams Sniper, assuming that's the pick they need or if it's the only one they could get with the room the other team provides for them. It's not really TOO different from 6s, except that the flank classes (sans roamer) don't really sac much in transition plays into or out of mid, and getting damage, forcing an uber, or winning ground for his team is a better use of his life than trying to kill the telescopemans who probably has a buff and is protected by the combo or flank.

The decision to offclass to Sniper is one that is not taken lightly. If you can't hit shit then your team is fighting 5v6, and you need TWO frags or a hell of a other of damage to validate going Sniper. Around half the time, clockwork got results at LAN by tearing a hole on the flank for his team to take advantage of. Clockwork's consistency at S14 LAN is why he wins my vote for the best Sniper playing currently, regardless of format.

BLoodSireI still have some tfc demos, and I plan to start up streaming again since I'm back from vaca, so I might load up tfc and take a look at them soon. 2 of the demos I have were from when they called me a cheater and I had to submit them, so those could be fun

blood if you can get any TFC demos working please let me know. I played a few pickups last month, and tried to load some of my demos and nothing worked. I have over 6 gigs of match demos all the way back to 2001...would love to know if there's a way to get any of those to load

Also, from what i caught yesterday sheep was doing insane.

I remember watching this hltv - he hit absolutely everything with like a 300 ping.
