Comp.tf - A competitive tf2 wiki?

The idea was born at the beginning of this year, I always had this idea to make a central hub for all things related to competitive tf2 to be able to help out newbies with lots of guides and even experienced players with information more easily accessible, so I bought the domain like in January and decided to start working on it. It looked something like this originally screen

I posted about it back in april on these forums , and it got a few visits but I never got the motivation back to finish it.

So a few days ago I read on a post around here somewhere about a competitive wiki that had players profiles and it struck me, instead of working on a basic wp site and doing it all by myself a wiki would be so much better for this kind of thing, and besides I could get the community working on it as well...

If you want to help out, just register an account at comp.tf and start writing stuff...

http://i.imgur.com/cF3ZCIJ.png

About anything, from class guides, to map guides or even player profiles, everything goes now, if I get enough participation from the community I will start creating guidelines and user groups but for now everyone registered should be able to create and edit.

Let's make this a point of reference for our scene, if we could manage to write a comprehensive guide for competitive tf2 to where we could direct every beginner it would be great for our scene

Let me know what you think.

I love the idea! I hope you have some sort of system to prevent people from trolling, and something to make sure information is accurate. EG: I could see a page about interp having lots of confusing and contradictory information if it's a collaboration so it'd probably be best to have it come from a reputable source. If that could be implemented this could be great!

The site is currently a completely clean installation of mediawiki, so it's like a big canvas waiting to be explored, feel free to be creative, and try not to mess other users work.

I am aware of this, also I am not very familiar with mediawiki, but I will try to learn the most I can in the near future so i can start making some changes. Particularly thinking about user groups, setting a decent homepage, start adding active users to "admin/mods" groups and etc... If this gets enough help I will work my best on it. I just need everyone to be on board.

Edit: depending on the support this gets, I will eventually think about moving to a dedicated host, currently hosting it on a shared account I have for all my other sites.

This looks like an amazing idea. You're welcome to add me if you want to discuss more over steam, I'd like to think I have some ideas to contribute to this. :)

I'm already editing the main page and adding in some basic links. It would be great if we could get people to start filling out the class pages.

Thanks for all the support! It is really exciting to watch this thing skyrocket!

Please remember to backup your edits on a txt file or something, with so many people editing the same pages at the same time it can lead to confusion and lost data.

Just going to point this out here, wikis should never be written in the first or second person. I.E, don't say things like "You should..." or "Make sure to...". Keep it somewhat non personal, it makes these much easier to read.

messing around with the maplist, might start working on spy a bit

Awesome job with the wiki. Hopefully this gets more added to it soon.

I'm adding in sniper and soldier stuff, make sure to link pages together as often as possible. This is what makes wikis so navigable, so every time you say "Medic" make sure to link it back to the medic page, etc.

Also, to link to a page in the wiki, or create a new page, you have to write out the link in the link like this:

[[NAMEOFPAGE]]

Doing this when the page doesn't exists makes a redlink, which means that a new page is made.

exactly, internal links are advised when possible. It makes the user experience much smoother and is also good for editors

remember if the word scout shows up multiple time on a page, link only the first instance of the word

For each class, we should have a section on sixes and one on highlander--i see the class pages that are edited right now are mostly just giant blobs of text

but it's okay because this wiki is like 40 minutes old

This. We could just have a generic class page, which shows class information, and two separate pages, one for each format, which shows format-specific information.

It's pretty normal, right now there are about 20 different people editing pages, everyone is writing in a different style, but at least everyone is creating content...

Once we got enough content settled in, we should (and will) start working on some guidelines and improving quality of the pages.

I thought about it, not sure what the best decision is tbh, we could have a giant class page that would encompass everything about that class in the different gamemodes, or a class page for each gamemode. That should be decided in the near future.

Ok, my 5th post in this thread in an hour, but this needs to be done:

We need a standard format for class pages. Right now all of the pages look different, and have different info, which is awful for anyone who were to use the site. I'm going to suggest a format just because I think it will work and we need a standard one.

Each class should have a generic page(I.E, /wiki/Scout), which contains class information such as weapons, abilities, stats, etc.

Then, each class should have a 6s, and HL variant (I.E, /wiki/6sScout, /wiki/HLScout) which contain format-specific roles and strategies. This should keep it nicely formatted and allow for more versions if 7v7 comes back or something like that.

Tomorrow or Tuesday when I have more time I will eventually start working on users group and probably create a moderators group from the most active contributors. That should improve the content quality as well..

I'm new to this whole wiki thing, it's the first time I am actually managing a media wiki installation and I'm not entirely familiar with the wiki markup as well... It's gonna be a bumpy but extremely exciting ride if everything works out for the best!

whoops fixed my writing. kind of abused 'The [class]' and 'The player' to make up for it but it looks better

i assumed that this was just for competitive information because the regular wiki already has standard class information

watti assumed that this was just for competitive information because the regular wiki already has standard class information

The information on the regular wiki could easily be recycled and digested into something which would make sense in this format. Also, any overlapping information from the other two pages could be put on the main page. It gives the wiki a nice, discrete feeling.

I actually like this layout. Gives the possibility of having a small description of the purpose of the class and then links to the main article for that gamemode.

Might actually adopt this as the standard format

Please keep the title format for classes like Spy (6v6) and Spy (Highlander) and not 6sScout and HLScout, the first format is more user friendly and also search engine friendly.

Added a small comment on the main page to keep the format consistent
