Been screwing around with Age of empires 2 LAN matches with buddies while i'm bored, and was wondering if there were any other games that were like it that were good/worth a try.

Age of Mythology, Rise of Nations, Rise of Legends, Civ 4/5 if you don't mind turn based.

age of mythology is pretty thug
imo it hit a nice balance for building health where aoe had too little, aoe 2 had too much, and aom had the right amount.

Age of mythology was really strange in multi player, the resources seemed incredibly easy to stockpile, and you couldn't really attack all that effectively early on since towers were strong, and yet later on basically whoever had a titan first or spammed more end game units, like the colossus they basically were guaranteed a win.

EDIT: still it was a really fun game, and supreme commander is really cool, but it's going to take a while to get used to thanks for the suggestions.

Empire Earth is great. My number 2 favorite old school RTS after RoN, probably biggest time span in any of them and it's also very competitive (lol what?). Very cool to play with friends. It's also like 5€/$ if you really are to buy it. EE2 is good too with some useful features that EE doesn't have because it is a dinosaur but I prefer the original gameplay-wise.

Empire Earth 3 is C&C4 level of garbage, stay away as far as you can by all means.

Its like your reliving my past, just the other month my friends and I loaded up some good old Age of Empires 2 for LAN play.

I recommend:
Company of Heroes
Rise of Nations
Anno (series, there is alot of them).

I also found these links handy:

Like Company of Heroes, Dawn of War 1 is pretty neat for LANs, it can be learned quite quickly and it's not too demanding (unlike supcom lol)

already mentioned, but Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds. It's on GOG and I played it a ton growing up so I'm biased, but I still have lots of fun whenever I boot it up again
