Steam overlay not working in only TF2

hey, was hoping someone can help me out, steam overlay does not work period in only tf2. Works on every other game I launch off steam, and yes I have steam community in game enabled and I tried removing programs like evga precision x that are said to cause steam overlay issues but it still continues. To make it even more weird the steam overlay works in tf2 on my alt, but not my main account which is the one i'm referring to. It's been like this for over a month now. Any ideas?

I had this issue a long time ago. The overlay came back every once in a while when i restarted TF2. What ended up fixing it for me was defragging TF2. I dont know if this is what ultimately fixed it for me. But you can give it a shot.

I had this problem up until yesterday when I noticed that there were 2 check boxes to enable steam community. Make sure you have both enabled. One is in the settings menu when you right click on steam and go to "in-game." The other (and the one I somehow managed to turn off and forget about) can be found by right clicking on TF2 in your games Library and going to "Properties." The check box is on the first window that pops up.

I am having the same problem, but this hasn't helped. I've checked both boxes, but still won't let overly work. Any ideas?

Some programs have their own overlays that can conflict with the Steam Overlay in some games. For a while the MSI On Screen Display would conflict for me and would disable the Steam Overlay. If you have something similar, you might want to see if disabling it fixes it.

Yeah, my desktop broke, so I've been using old/shitty laptop. Has a lot of popup notifications (HP software). I'll see what I can do. Thanks.

Sorry for necro but,

I have had this problem for a long time now and thought maybe I could find a fix here
I can access steam in-game with dx9 but not with 8 (inb4 use dx9 then lelele).
I have a toaster computer that runs the game well in dx8. I have already tried everything else and made sure that it is enabled but it won't let me open it in game.

To see what people type to me in steam.
also shouldn't that change anything? If I delete the -dxlevel then it will automaticly give me so much lower frames

My problem might be confusing to understand so I'll try to explain it as detailed as possible.

I get a solid 160 fps WHEN I KEEP the -dxlevel 81 in the launch settings, but I am unable to check steam in-game (can't shift+tab) neither can I go to the store in-game, it tells me I have to enable steam overlay. I can only tab out of the game to check my steam or what someone has typed to me in chat. but it takes a solid 30 seconds to tab back into the game ( Gives me a black screen and if I am in a server it times me out of the server).

IF I REMOVE THE -dxlevel 81 from the launcher settings I lose around 90-100 fps in game. It looks like I am playing with dxlevel 90. BUT I am able to shift+tab and use the mann co store.

As you can see my problem is really odd as it seems most of the people don't get an major fps boost with keeping the dxlevel in the launch settings.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
