so i noticed today that when im playing tf2, my computer will make this weird hissing/weird high pitched hum sound. Thinking immediately that a fan was dying in my case, i checked my temps to make sure everything was ok temperature wise, and it was. But then something weird happened, i exited tf2 and BAM, the noise was totally gone, how could software be correlated to a hardware problem, im confused.

Fans run faster when a more intensive process is running.

what #2 said , probably your graphics card since their fans usually only run at around 30% speed when they aren't being stressed

I used to have a UPS backup system. I upgraded to 2 GTX 295's and tried to play Crysis maxed. The UPS prevented my computer from drawing enough power and it would let out a really annoying warning sound. Took me a while to figure it out.

If it's not a normal fan sound but more high pitched and whiny it is probably your PSU.
