I'm playing on a laptop that have a bad built-in microphone. Because of it, i got myself a separate microphone, and it's working just fine. But the problem is, whenever i'm connecting to a server, TF2 picks up built-in microphone as soon as loading window says "Sending client info", requiring me to replug my separate one to work again. It is rather annoying, and i would like to get rid of it.
I'll provide any other info if necessary.

I think you can set default communication device somewhere in the game options. Is your built in mic the one selected there?

If you are on windows right click your volume icon hit recording devices. Right click the correct mic and choose "set as default device" along with "Set as default communication device" Then restart Steam so it changes the microphone it will use.

It uses whatever Steam is set to use. Try going to the Steam settings for voice communication.
