Many people still ask me about when the next GXL LAN is, so I want to update everyone about what's going on with it.

Without going into too much detail, GXL is on an indefinite hiatus. Maybe it's done for good, maybe it'll come back later. Not really sure.

However, most of the staff from GXL are teaming up to start something new. A lot of these guys were essential parts to GXL, so whatever this new LAN they will be having will be great. Whenever they announce more details on what they will be called and their next events, I'll post it here. Due to having a new name, it may take a little bit of time to get traction for the size of their LANs, but we'll see what the response is out of the gates.

I'm good friends with the guys who are starting this new thing, but I'm still deciding on if I want to be their tournament director due to being really busy as of late. Regardless, once they hold a LAN of decent size, I'll make sure that a TF2 tournament will be taken care of with someone capable from the TF2 community. That's assuming there is still a desire for a tournament, which I'm sure there will be.

I don't have an ETA for this new LAN. I also don't know any other details about GXL other than it's on an indefinite hiatus. What I can tell you is that as of right now, GXL is not happening this year. Sorry if this disappointing to the many that have looked forward to this every year.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me here.

If anyone knows of a LAN event that they think would be a good venue for a tf2 tournament the size of gxl, let me know. I am willing to admin and run a tournament and liaise with LAN organisers to make it happen.

I assume FITES lan is still happening? They've always been happy to host tf2.

Not sure. They usually have a LAN in February/March but not this year. I've heard that they are also on a hiatus but I don't know if that's true.

I have heard whisperings of FITES being no more next year, and they don't truly have the infrastructure to support a gxl sized gathering of you nerds.

If you guys ever want to do something down in Florida let me know as I would love to collaborate on making an amazing lan.

Would you guys be down to LAN in NYC? Maybe later in the year? I know a group of guys that run community LAN's in many games every month I'm sure they would be down to help out.

Hmm it seems now the mainly TF2 based LAN now for the year is Flan now, it certainly is saddening to hear that GXL isn't happening this year but maybe now the GXL traffic can be diverted to FLan for this year? Would that be a plausible idea?

Sure, let's just take everyone who would normally be able to drive and attend a LAN in Philly and then have them fly down to Florida

Central east coast location would be 1000x better.

As awesome as FLAN is it only pulls like 30-40 people right now right?

It definitely would but I mean in terms of just this year, as FLan is already scheduled.

aww fuck I was actually going to attend my first LAN this year.

If other venues/events are being examined around the philly area, maybe Bucks County/Montgomery County/Delaware County or the Wilmington, DE area are worth examining. They're all <30 minutes' drive from Phila and would cost a fraction as much as something within the city proper.

I know some people who rent warehouse space in philly but while it's large enough for a bunch of nerds, I don't think any of them have the kind of power/internet equipment necessary for a LAN.

if anyone wanted to set it up in philadelphia proper, there's a small-ish (40 house computers, 100 max capacity not including spectators) LAN venue in NoLibs called LocalHost http://localhostphilly.com/ that has pretty amenable pricing and a fairly open schedule for events. They currently host a local organization pretty frequently for CSGO, Starcraft, and OW tourneys http://n3rdstreetgamers.com/

I live in west philly and work by city hall, and I used to work as a booking agent and sound guy at a venue so I'd be down to lend a hand if anyone wanted to set something up on the smaller side within city limits.

Is that good pricing? Just by my calculation an event the length of GXL would cost over 15 grand, or was that sort of event some super good deal we can't expect to see again?

The $350/hr pricing you're looking at is for like extravagant l33t gamer birthday parties and shit. "Want to run an e-sports event? Contact us now" and "Custom packages available. Contact us for more information" both seem to indicate that we could negotiate something considerably more reasonable from them, especially if we'd only be using the space 8-10 hours a day for 3 days.

Population center of the US is Plato, Missouri.

IMO a good place for a new LAN would be somewhere in the Midwest. Probably Chicago, Indy, Cincinnati, Louisville, or Columbus.
