whats killing my fps in overwatch [gpu or cpu?]

I've had this rig since 2007, excluding the replacement GFX card after my 8800GT blew up, and my knowledge of parts is sparse.
My frames in Overwatch range from 5 FPS to 30 FPS randomly. Average is around 25 FPS.

My Rig:

  • E8400 duel core 3.0 GHz
  • Nvidia GTX 460 SE
  • 4 Gigs of RAM

Can i get away with just upgrading to a new GFX card?
Or is my processor too weak sauce for Overwatch?
Or both :(
Is overclocking an option? (I'm hesitant because of summer weather) but I'm also not trying to spend a fortune.

both are horribly weak for a graphicly intense game like overwatch.

you set everything to low, turned off the FPS cap and set your in-game resolution to reflect your monitor's hertz, right?

You'll need both a new CPU and GPU for OW. You might be able to get by on the GPU front if you're okay playing at low, but you won't get respectable framerates even at low until you upgrade that CPU. Blizzard games are notoriously CPU-bound. I'd also consider going to 8GB of RAM.

so overclocking wouldn't have much effect? honestly a consistent 25 fps would be manageable for me since the game pretty much aims for you, the dips to 5 fps are killing me though. (i should have mentioned this in the original post)

In all seriousness though it could be either or could be both. I'd need to know your settings and resolution.
No, I can't guess your resolution, because as it turns out Asus builds more than one monitor:
http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/monitor/#m=8&H=144,240

Also why the fuck do you even own a 144Hz monitor?
I'm betting you can't get 144fps in any game. Do you even get 60fps?

Yes, you can try overclocking. Assuming you want to go from drops to 5fps to minimum 25fps you'd have to overclock to at least 5 times the original clockrate though. I don't see 15GHz happening. The best you could reasonably expect is to improve your minimum from 5 to 8fps and while that is an improvement I guess it's not good enough.

I brought up CPU because I've personally run the game on the lowest possible settings (including viewport scale) and managed to keep around 60 FPS on a shitty NVS 5400M, based on the GeForce 540M chip. However the CPU used was a mid-range mobile Ivy Bridge i5 and 8GB RAM.

Obviously you should upgrade both, but the CPU is the biggest bottleneck right now. You're going to want at least 4 threads if you want OW to start being GPU bottlenecked. For instance, a Sandy i3 handily beats the G3258 just because it has hyperthreading (dual core + HT).

No, I average about 115 FPS in CSGO and TF2 but i figured I'd plan ahead for a future PC upgrade when i invested in a new monitor, the Asus VG248QE. I think the time to upgrade has arrived. Last night my computer completely froze (Couldn't ctrl+alt+del) in CSGO and Rocket League, games i never have issues with...i think playing overwatch on such low FPS fucked up my graphics card :*(

You still haven't told me which settings you're getting 25fps on.

Also 115fps on 144Hz feels like having your eyes removing with a cheese grater, why would you buy a 144Hz monitor instead of a new CPU + mobo that would've got you 300fps?

Playing on low fps can't fuck up your GPU.

all low 1920 x 1080 *144
on these setting i get 25 fps some games and 5 fps other games, it's bipolar.
I'm pretty much convinced I need to upgrade my whole pc if i wanna play overwatch at this point.

SetsulAlso 115fps on 144Hz feels like having your eyes removing with a cheese grater, why would you buy a 144Hz monitor instead of a new CPU + mobo that would've got you 300fps?

because i needed a monitor not a computer 2 years ago. I had no reason to upgrade my whole pc when i only played csgo and tf2 at the time. The 144Hz still looks much smoother compared to my old 60 Hz and now I have a 144 Hz monitor when i eventually have to upgrade.

SetsulPlaying on low fps can't fuck up your GPU.

it can't cause my GPU to overheat?

In that case it's probably your CPU. You could just check GPU load though to be sure.

Overheating got nothing to do with fps. It's about the load and cooling. If you turn of the fans it's definitely going to overheat. More load = more power = more heat. Whether you reach 100% at 200fps or 5fps doesn't matter.

so i have a new problem...

i figured out that you can setup battlenet to exit after you launch overwatch, which i previously though was required to run in order to play overwatch and it helped with my FPS greatly. I was playing overwatch with frustration free fps for about a week until last night, while in a game, all of a sudden my graphics artifact, pc freezes, then shuts down. it wont let me boot up my pc to my desktop.

this is what happens when i restart: ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3khXbTfYyS0 ) and after i did the system restore it failed to correct the problem. when i start windows normally i just get blue screen of death (i couldn't make out any error code) or if it doesn't bsod it looks like it does in the beginning of the video with the yellow lines scattered over my monitor.

anyone have a hunch if this issue is related to the mobo, cpu, or gfx card issue?
visually this looks like a gfx card issue, but i found it odd that it couldn't boot up to my desktop, which leads me to believe its an issue with my cpu / mobo.

i though i'd post this before i went to buy parts to test out the problem.

The problem seems to be a nvidia issue (the "Nvlddmkm.sys error" on the BSOD).

At this point, instead of buying new parts, if i were you i would just buy a new pc in general. If this pc is from 2007 everything is going to be horribly outdated and you should only keep the hard drive, case and maybe ram if its ddr3. If you want, i can give you a pcpartpicker setup if you give me price range.

I'll give those a try panda, thanks. but i still think it's a hardware issue causing the artifacts.

That be great Kevinn, I could go up to $1000 on an entirely new rig. But I'm not sure that it's necessary to go that high considering my requests. I'd like to be able to run dual monitors as well as have the ability to stream overwatch on low settings (with no fps lag if possible). The streaming part isn't as important depending on how much more i'd have to spend. I have no clue what type of power it takes to stream so maybe my price range is way off.

There you go. The lack of video card is due to the launch of the 400 series from amd in a little bit, and with the 480 being 200 bucks and the 490 likely being 250, while both either compete with or outperform nvidia's latest options, i see no reason for you not to buy one.

http://pcpartpicker.com/list/MZ4rxY

Here's one for if you want to keep the case and hard drive. If you only want to keep one of them go with the ssd in the first list. This is also assuming you will use the 480 or 490.

There's so many things wrong with this build.
Apart from the 212 Evo being the 212 Evo which I'm sick of talking about at this point, why do you think he'll need an aftermarket cooler at all? It's a locked CPU.
A slow SSD. Sure it's cheaper, but the whole point of getting SSD is speed.

But the best thing. Not only did you choose a 750W 80+ Bronze PSU for a <350W build, but you'd be spending 60$ on it. You can get a good 80+ Gold 750W for 65$.. There's also cheaper Gold options with a more reasonable wattage, but I'm sticking with the Bronze budget option.

The second build is even worse. A 212 Evo for an i7-6700K? Nevermind, you can't overclock anyway because it's a B150 motherboard.

The RX 480 4GB will be 200$, the 8GB version will be 250$. There will not be a 490 until at least October and that will be significantly more expensive.
I sincerely hope with "nVidia's latest options" you meant the latest options in that price range and not the GTX 1080 and 1070.
