SAO_zeroskillBudget: $500-$600If you were me, would you spend your budget on one superb 120hz monitor or would you get two really good monitors?Which one would you choose as the superb monitor and which one would you choose to double up?Thanks ahead of time~! I'd wait for this to come out:http://pcmonitors.info/asus/another-144hz-model-the-asus-vg248qe

Interesting. I am so impatient though. Hrmmmm.

HutchI found a guy nearby on craigslist selling a Viewsonic vx2268wm for $130. I've been looking to upgrade from my 60hz to a 120hz monitor.

1) Should I get it
2) Do 120hz monitors exist without 3D? I really just want a monitor capable of 120hz but I can't find any without 3D and all that the 3D feature is doing for me is raising the price

So I'm gonna get it. How do I confirm that its in good shape? The guy selling says that it works "like new" but it's a year old and it's also craigslist. Are there any telltale signs like the high-pitched noise thing to tell me i shouldn't be getting it?

Sure, so this is a Windows registry tweak you can do that reduces LCD motion blur to levels comparable with CRTs. My understanding is it does this by using Lightboost2 technology to strobe the LCD backlight at the exact time a full frame is to be drawn on the screen.

You can see the difference in following video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD5gjAs1A2s&feature=player_embedded#!

The beginning of the video shows a test without the tweak. When the numbers change the motion blur is obvious. At 43s he does a second test this time with the tweak enabled and the motion blur is almost eliminated.

Anyone with an nvidia card and a LightBoost2 monitor should try this tweak out and report back.

If anyone else with a BenQ is curious, the following post contains the BenQ instructions:

http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1039488013&postcount=375

I have not noticed much difference after this tweak on my XL2420T, but I'd be interested to see what kind of results others here are seeing.

From the hardforum thread it sounds like BenQ's AMA setting already does something similar, so out of the box it is already as good as the lightboosted asus model

I had to google every ad that included the model name and number to find mine. Most people don't realize their monitor can run at 120hz.

The lightboost mod won't work for older generation 3D monitors like the viewsonic vx2268wm if anyone else is wondering.

These are monitors the guide listed: ASUS VG728H, ASUS VG278HE, BENQ XL2420T, BENQ XL2411T, Acer HN274H

I have one, I haven't really used it that much but I'll share my thoughts on it. I think it performs better than my old Viewsonic 120hz, objects in motion look a lot less blurry on the Asus than the Viewsonic and the image quality is a lot better once you tweak the awful stock colors.

I also tested LightBoost for most of the day and while everything looked much more fluid than non-LB 120/144hz, it gave me a really bad headache. Apparently the way the screen refreshes while in LightBoost mode can give people problems if they're sensitive to flicker induced refreshes, so if you've had problems with high refresh rate CRT's then you'll probably have problems with LightBoost. You also have to have an Nvidia card and the newer Nvidia drivers that cause texture flickering on DX8. YMMV when it comes to LB basically.

Keep your eyes on the Asus VG248QE threads at OCN and HardForum as there are some knowledgeable people there that are getting their hands on the Asus.

Re: the lightboost tweak, I tried it and it definitely has a noticeable effect but I honestly couldn't see a difference in my ability to track moving objects cleanly. It also seemed to be really flaky with the XL2420T where sometimes when I launched TF2 it would start without lightboost on and I'd have to tab out and back in. Other times TF2 would start in 3D mode and even if I used ctrl-T to set it back to 2d mode my fps would be capped at 120 and i'd have massive input lag.

Too much of an inconsistent hassle and not enough benefit for me. If it were a feature built in to the actual nvidia/benq drivers and worked consistently I might experiment with it more.

To those testing the tweak, download perpixan (http://www.prad.de/download/pixperan_english.zip) and run the readability test (F4) before and after the tweak.

You will find that there is a huge difference in motion blur, heavily favoring the lightboost tweak. I was skeptical until I did this test.

A lot of people have pmed me about getting stuck at 120 FPS. I can only assume that has to do with a bug in the drivers with vsync. Keep checking this thread: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1734114 to keep up to date.

its not vsync its just the application (driver?) starting in 3d mode

the tweak is based round forcing the monitor into 3d mode when the game is just running normally, seems like the hack doesnt always work correctly that way and TF2 will launch in 3d mode which caps frames at 60, then if you ctrl-T back to 2d from there it is capped at 120. This mode also fucks up input lag fiercely (at least for me).

as far as readability i'm not denying there is less motion blur (because the tweak eliminates it) but I've just found that having no motion blur doesnt seem to make it any easier for me to track moving objects. It generally looks more "crisp" but if anything the flickering refresh makes motion look less smooth and seemed harder on my eyes

it also really kills the perceived brightness of the picture since the backlight is off half the time

djc120hz and 3d go hand in hand because 3d done on a panel with <120hz has very noticable flickering

just to clarify, 120 Hz does allow 3D, but a monitor having 3D does not guarantee that it is 120 Hz. Some monitors, eg whatever model LG replaced the W2363D with, use polarizing 3D instead of active-shutter glasses and are only 60 Hz.
