TV Screen tearing with HDMI

So I got myself a new TV and connected my PC to it using HDMI. Now for some reason it appears to have terrible screen tearing - fast moving videos are unwatchable. I've been unsuccessfully googling the way to fix that for about an hour. Please help me.
Edit: My TV is running at 1080p, my desktop monitor is 1080p, connection is HDMI.

might be a long shot but do you turn your PC's monitors off while you do your buisness with the TV ? I get horrendous frame skipping and tearing on my TV if I turn even one of my 2 monitors off

I used to have an Emmerson TV as a monitor, and it was also un-usable with HDMI. As far as I know there was no way to fix my problem, and you may be having the same problem.
