Oh no, not another fps thread.
I'm in a bit of a hole here. I've been using a macbook air laptop (yayaya I know mac's suck for gaming), but it had been working fine for the first few months I've been using it. I got fairly steady 70-100 frames.
Now its a different story. my frames are hovering around 40, with drop as low as 16. It gets a ton worse when other gamers get involved. It sucks when doing highlander or 6's especially
I've been using dx 80 and chrismaxframes, and also tried nohats mods, but servers with over 10 players just make it die
The cringe specs - Intel Core i7 2677m CPU@ 1.80gZ

I know its a toaster, but I should be able to get something to work, and it has in the past been fine
I've verified steam catches, reinstalled, nothing seems to work.
Y'all know a lot more than I do about computers, and it would be great if you could shed some light on this

what do your Temps get up to. MacBooks have a tendency to get really hot and this can affect things like fps and can damage parts under long term heat

You can go "yayaya" all you want but this is your sole performance problem. cme already brought up temps and no aftermarket laptop cooler is honestly going to make a difference.

ik an aftermarket cooler won't help laptops, I'm trying to troubleshoot the problem. maybe he damaged his processor from heat. maybe it's another hardware/software issue

The aftermarket thing was directed at OP because I was pretty sure that would be one of the first things he would look up. It sounds like a mix between heat damage and general valve tomfoolery where we have a bunch of isolated cases of noticeable performance dips after an update, honestly.

I think there was some guy who watercooled his Macbook, you could try it if you really want to use a Macbook seeing as temps are probably your problem.

If he damaged his cpu from heat, programs and/or the OS would be crashing. There would be no effect on clock speed or performance.

If he damaged his cpu from heat, programs and/or the OS would be crashing. There would be no effect on clock speed or performance.
Are you running OS X or Windows?
The fps drops are more than likely caused from the new skins in the gun mettle update. The OS X version of TF2 is locked at dx9 because it uses a DirectX 9 compatible interface for OpenGL. So what ever -dxlevel you use won't actually change anything on the OS X version.
Another fix that works on Windows is mat_picmip -1, but Valve changed it on the OS X version in a recent patch so it won't go lower than 1, because lower values were causing crashes.
I highly recommend boot camping Windows if you're not already, since Valve is known for breaking the OS X version of TF2 and taking forever to fix it.
