I have problems with school. I honestly don't know how to handle it or how people ever do work. I sit down and open up my laptop, and I try to do work, but it all seems grossly unappealing. I'm failing one of my classes and I feel like I just can't take it any more. I had a mental breakdown in English class today, and I just feel all around miserable. I don't know HOW to do work, or more specifically how to get motivated to do it. I see a psychologist every other week, but I end up lying to her just so I don't feel bad. Every day I fear that another teacher is gonna send an email home to my parents about my sub-par performance, leading to yelling, arguing, having my night ruined and sometimes not being allowed to play games (which ends up in me missing scrims). How do I get motivated? Like 10% of the time I just do the work, but the other 90% it's SO hard to get motivated to do anything. I'm gonna guess some of you have been in the same situation before, how do I get out of these habits? Thanks in advance

If you're seeing a psychologist you really need to open up with them about this. Lack of motivation can be a symptom of something larger and if you feel like shit all the time it's hard to realize the consequences of not getting through school. If you're taking meds and still feeling like that it could be that those are only hurting the problem.

You shouldn't worry about telling the truth with your doctor though and it can feel pretty good to express what you're going through, especially to someone who can help you as much as a psychologist.

Why the fuck do you lie to a psychologist? It's not like they're going to commit you to an asylum. Think about it, you talk to your psychologist and they give you tips and help you work things out, and you don't feel like shit for lying.

Beyond that I know what you mean about classwork, and honestly the only tip I have is at least try to do it. (even if you half ass shit, cause at least you'll get part of it done.)

I'm on adderall for ADHD, which helps a lot. I like my psychologist, but I don't wanna admit that I'm trying to get on my feet and failing over and over and over again

first off just tell ur doc the truth cuz it might be a physiological problem like a thyroid or adrenal gland issue u feel

also remember there are other options than going 2 a public hs but if u dont want to bail and want to actually fix the problem its on you to motivate urself theres no easy option friend

I had the same exact issue in college and it took me failing a class to realize that I actually had to get into gear and do work.

The biggest piece of advice I can recommend is to make or go to a place that is only for work. For example, idk about your school but at my college they kept the library open 24/7 so I just went there to do all my work, there was no distractions and no temptation to play games or any of that. And if you just adapt it into your schedule it's not that big of an inconvenience, like if I had class from 8am-1pm I'd go to the library from 1-4 to do all my work, then go home and play games. If you school doesn't offer anything just go to a public library or at the very least set up a distinct spot in your house w/o a computer or TV or anything to do work.

Also I'm not gunna repeat what other people said about the psychologist but if you just tell them what you said here, they can likely give you way better advice. Don't be embarrassed about that shit, it's their job and they hear shit that's 10x worse every day.

idk if this will help you or not, but i treated school like a game

it really helped me out thinking about things like math as part of a game, and all the homework assignment as individual quests and silly things like that, but it really helped me because i completely stopped playing everything except for highlander (which was 2-3 days a week for only about 1-2 hrs) until i finished school with honors

school is a grind, and i think if you don't try to make it fun for yourself, it's going to really burn you out

a side-note is that my friend does this exact same thing, except he uses it as motivation to work out, and it helped him turn into a gym junkie

it's the same thing as thinking yourself as a character in a videogame, and you're literally gaining experience to level yourself up

this is the nerdiest thing i have ever typed, so i hope it helps

If you have issues opening up to your psychologist, try writing it down and asking her to read it. Maybe just show her this thread, as mentioned before.

You need a new start, just tell yourself that you're going to start studying after the next holiday and do it, if you prepare for it in your mind it will all be easier to handle and there will be a smaller chance of you giving up than if you were to tell yourself that you're going to do it tomorrow.

As a person training to be a teacher it makes me worry how many people feel that they can't easily talk to their teachers. Keep your personal problems between you and your psychiatrist but it might be an idea to talk to a teacher that you feel most comfortable with about your motivation issues in school. Most teachers want to help; if there is something that they can do to make your time easier I'm sure most would be open to the idea of helping you.

what do you have to lose by doing your schoolwork? i guess you'd have to give up:
-making your parents angry
-making yourself angry
-losing the attention that comes from being "in trouble" at school

you know what you are capable of. sounds like you're performing below your capacity. now you have to ask yourself, what do i stand to lose by performing at my capacity?

and, yes, you should talk to your psychologist. you can start by asking her if she has any ideas about why you don't trust her.

First things off, try not to lie to your psychologist. Even you dont tell her the thruth and nothing but the absolute truth you shouldnt lie to her. Try to simplify the conversation a bit and it will develop eventually.

And now to the part of homeworks and motivation, try to focus on small parts of it first and then see how it goes. Step-by-step and if you stress out relax a bit and then pick it up again

There's a lot of advice in this thread, so I'll just leave a couple of things. First of all, know that although sometimes it feels like everyone around you is doing well and it's just you having a tough time, it's not. There are soo many people struggling with motivation or anxiety when it comes to school, so don't worry, you aren't alone! Put yourself in a position to succeed. You're going to find creating good habits can be difficult if you're constantly at your gaming computer or just in your room. Once you get some consistancy going, it's going to seem so much easier for you. If you need to scale back on gaming or whatever or move away from your computer, just do it. Cutting distractions or taking a break completely can be very good for you. Create a good work environment by making one of your free blocks your consistant study time, maybe bring a friend or group along. Get on a good sleep schedule, your body will thank you. College is a huge commitment, and you're going to have to really want it. There really isn't a shortcut to motivation aside from just jumping in and doing it, knowing you want that end result. But most importantly, don't beat the shit out of yourself for not meeting your expectations. It's really hard getting out of a drag, but you can do it! And I'm sure you'll feel amazing when things begin to turn around.

Sorry for the block of text, I'm on mobile. I hope I helps a bit though.. You've got a lot of support behind you, don't forget!

this happened to my sister, she basically lost all motivation to work and quit college after 4 years, she doesnt want to go back to her psycologist or take her antidepressives so she stays all day in her bed in our parents house. She doesnt do anything.
Take that as an example, you dont to be a horrible failure in life do you? motivation doesnt mean anything you just have to teach yourself discipline

stop playing games for a week. tell your team to find a ringer.

by the 3rd day youll wake up on time, not exhausted, and not dreading getting to school.
eat breakfast every day that week.

when you get home fucking do your homework.
remind yourself games will get you nowhere in life and won't pay your bills.

dont play games past 12am ever. it ruins your life.

also stop lying to your psychologist, and hit the gym. video games arent going to do shit for you. im fucking 25 and still play them too much but im introverted as fuck and work out 5-6 days a week with a full time job.

for real, take time off until your body actually starts functioning then reevaluate the situation. its all self control.

A day of worrying is more exhausting than a week of working.

See your goal and ask yourself: "do I want it badly enough?", if the answer is yes then your actions should reflect that; if they don't, then you either don't truly want to achieve your goal(s) or they are not the right goal(s) for you.

Be your best. My History teacher always told me that the world is full of people who think "I wish I tried harder in school", but there is not a single person that grows up regretting the effort they put in.

I know how you feel, I took a year off school due to mental health and my legs getting crippled, when I went back I couldn't face it; so I dropped out. The school offered home tutoring (thank God) but the tutor they provided is a condescending, patronizing sociopath. Right now I'm pretty much teaching myself through my last year of exams and motivating myself has seriously been the hardest part of all of it. I want to go to college in September, I want to rub my A-A* grade in my tutor's face when I'm done, and I want to be the best I can. You can too, it's hard but you can.

Maybe the reason your not motivated to work is because you have no goal in life. You might find it useless to work long term because you don't think highly of your self. Always go for big even if you know deep inside that it might be impossible it still will help boost your adrenaline and get you more motivated to work.

Get off your computer, not video games, your computer for a week like flame suggested. Don't try and find some alternative to playing on the computer either. For the week all you do is do your homework, study, and sleep. Think about life and what you want to do. Hell on occasion just sit out by the window and daydream for an hour, its good for you. These video games manipulate us to forget about things outside.

Don't be upset if you don't get the grade you wanted. The only time you should ever be upset in school is if you truly don't think you tried. Don't take advantage of this excuse though if you have even 1 missing assignment then I'd consider that as not trying hard enough.

Do what your teachers want you to do. Don't try to be a smart ass or over achieve on something that will gain little respect because trust me the sad truth is most of these teachers give little shit about you or your future. Work off your rubric and do exactly everything that your teachers tell you to do because overall that's what is going to get you an A. Freshmen year of high school for me I took an HTML class and I had already knew html. So basically all I did was showoff my projects and try and overachieve on a class that was simple and one that I made complicated. Sure I got an A in that class but I put too much focus into that class that all my other grades started to drop.

If your in high school focus on getting into college more than anything else. If that means dropping video games or certain classes you want to take then so be it. Take high school seriously fuck around in college(but not too much).
