I just got this problem today. My game will launch and enter it's usual "loading" screen where it shows a picture of 2fort or upward, then crashes (hl2.exe is not responding) as soon as it reaches the game menu. I've already tried:

-Verifying my game cache
-Uninstalling/reinstalling HUD
-Reboot
-Reinstalling TF2

What else can I do? Any help is appreciated.

This didn't solve the problem, but thanks for your help.

edited because I realized it sounded kinda rude originally.

I'm currently experiencing this same issue
it's tf2 specific (for me), I can run hl2 and l4d2 just fine so I know it's not hl2.exe screwing up on it's own

any luck figuring out what's wrong/fixing it?

EDIT: after turning my comp off last night the problem seems to have sorted itself out for me, if it was something on valve's end hopefully it was fixed

I've seen at least one more person complain about this other than these two.
This isn't an isolated issue.

Prec.

I don't know what's up with it considering that I've played yesterday with no problems. I downloaded a new copy and it too isn't allowing tf2 to start up.

whatever HUD you're using might be causing problems.

I'm getting this too. I've got a fresh install of tf2 atm.
This is what is coming up in console.

My Friend had this problem yesterday, and he was able to fix it.

All he did was change his Anti-Virus, guessing it was blocking Tf2 or something
but after he changed it, Tf2 launched without crashing.

idk if this will work but, give it a shot

The problem seemed to fix itself after waiting a day. I have no idea why it worked, but it has. Thank you guys for your suggestions.

I also get a problem like this. i startup TF2 and it takes like 20 mins to load. But when it does load, it crashes and i get a KERNEL DATA INPAGE ERROR. It used to do this about 2-3 months ago, before i had to buy a new hard drive. Than about 2 weeks ago, i ran a program called CCleaner and ever since i ran that tf2 has been crashing. Help would be much appreciated.

i use crap cleaner all the time and i have no problems but try scanning for registry errors, verifying your game cache and reinstalling tf2

I'm currently experiencing the same problem..

After TF2 loads it will just lock up. I have to force close it through a personal task killer I wrote to be able to close it.

[*] Not my HUD (Removed all custom files)
[*] Not my FPS scripts (Remove all autoexecs)
[*] Verifying cache completed, no success.
[*] Not video drivers, fully up to date on all hardware's firmware

So yeah.. latest update seems to have done something to some people?

Let's start a tally or gather some general information.

Post up your specs and lets see what we all have in common.

OS: Windows 8.1
GPU: GeForce GTX 550 Ti
CPU: i5-4570 @ 3.2GHZ

Dual monitor setup.

Oh, and please note it usually takes ~2 seconds for me to launch TF2.

Now it takes easily 10-15 seconds.

After some digging I have found the problem.

Or.. the fix at least. Not quite sure what the problem is?

Steps

  1. Completely exit the Steam client.
  2. Open the run command (Windows Key + R)
  3. Type in steam://flushconfig
  4. Restart your PC
  5. Start steam from the directory in which its installed (Not a shortcut or from Start)

Your steam may need to update but you won't lose any installation (May want to back up maps/configs. Didn't check if it cleared those or not)

But this fixed it for me :)

Thanks man this is the only thing that stopped the crashing for me. The only thing it removed was my TF2 launch options

Yeah, not quite sure why it happened to some and not others but something about the update definitely broke some people's TF2.

Sorry for bumping, but I thought I'd mention that the Mumble Overlay can also cause this. I was unfortunate enough to re-image my laptop before figuring out it was Mumble causing the issue. Probably did not apply to this exact situation but...
This appears to be computer specific related, for example this issue only happens on my HP Pavilion DV6 Laptop [Windows 7] and does not happen on my custom built desktop [Windows 7]. I discovered the overlay was crashing my game after a friend randomly mentioned one of his games refused to start with it enabled.

You are probably missing your gameinfo.txt file, it happens to me a lot. I am running Windows 10. What you can do is delete your local game content and reinstall it. Believe me, it sucks to have this frequently. Especially because I am a SPY MAIN! Gotta keep trickstabs on par u know? :) Hope this helps, if it doesn't try finding out what the gameinfo.txt has inside it and make your own in the correct file path, (srry idk what it is)

P.S. Srry for wordy answers

I really appreciate your kindness to try and help someone with their issues but you don't have to necro 2 years old thread
Thanks for understanding
